Portsmouth fans asking who our number 12 was on 23:34 - Sep 27 with 4744 views | SuffolkPunchFC | And yet we still have fans that say he’s not that specially, and we shouldn’t have chased so hard to get him back. My POS last season, and the key to us having a successful campaign this season.

I think there was maybe a combination of conserving energy for Tuesday and also letting Pompey come onto us a bit to provide more space to work with when we turned it over. We created a couple of chances in transition e.g. the Walle Egeli shot that came from this sort of situation. The pressure they did have didn't really lead to much until the late corner.

Goals from midfield really wasn't one of our strengths last time out. Morsy and Luongo got 5 goals between them all season. The role our CMs play mean they aren't going to be prolific, I'd like to see Cajuste get a few goals for sure but he set up our first and Matusiwa was instrumental in setting up our second, and that's much more what they're in the side to do, link up play and get it to the attacking quartet.

In reality, we have so many goals (as in scoring history) ahead of the CMs that we don't really need them to be doing the job themselves. Better to concentrate on breaking up attacks and, as you say, distribution of the ball. Too much marauding forwards is only going to leave them out of position when counterattacked.

I’m not worried about goals, I just want to see him put in a complete performance over 60 - 70 minutes. He’s got all the ability to dominate games, and shows it for periods. Not sure whether it’s a fitness thing or confidence & character, I’d love to see him grab games by the collar. He does have a tendency to have a really strong 15 minutes before going missing for long periods. He missed pre season and is still working his way back, I’m hoping that comes.

Used to hate it when people quoted his lack of assists last year ignoring the amount of times he sprung the midfield and released Davis.

Broadhead, Chaplin, Burns were all midfield players imo.

Mate, this is a wild take. Cajuste is basically playing Luongo's role, he's not playing the role those three played. They were all attacking players, not sitting midfielders.

A wild take to say Broadhead, Chaplin and Burns were midfield players? I’m not comparing Cajuste output to theirs because clearly they play in different positions. We need a spread of goals from midfield, cajuste could do with chipping in with 5-10 goals. I would argue Cajuste role isn’t the same as Luonguo’s it’s a more attacking role than what we’ve seen with Massimo.

It's rather like saying the central defenders should be getting the same number of assists as the full backs. They are clearly very different roles. Your suggestion was that the Cajuste role is one that saw a lot of goals in our promotion season. It wasn't. That said, I was one who said previously that I could see Cajuste's quality but felt he didn't make the best use of it when I saw him play last season. On Saturday he made far better use of the space he made for himself. He had a very good game.

For me the goals and assists really doesn't matter as long as we are scoring goals and winning matches.

We've got loads of goals in us. Hirst, Ivan, Philogene, Clarke, Szmodics & Akpom are capable of 60 goals between them. They're already tracking ahead of that. Outside of that 6 there will be plenty of others chipping in over the course of the season. As you say, goals is only 1 side of the equation. Burnley got 100 points and scored less than Norwich in mid table.

I personally wouldn't describe Chaplin or Broadhead as midfield players, Burns is more arguable as he's played wingback, but the wild part was more introducing them as a comparison for Cajuste. Cajuste's role in the team is wildly different to the role that Broadhead, Chaplin, or Burns played. Their equivalents in our current side are the likes of Philogene, Clarke, McAteer, Szmodics, Akpom, and Walle Egeli. Comparing their goal output to Cajuste's is comparing apples and oranges, a much fairer comparison is with our CMs from 2023/24, and as I mentioned, they chipped in with 5 goals between them.

Yup agreed. When he turns & breaks the lines it’s a thing of beauty, when he’s fully up to fitness hopefully he see it with more frequency.

Considering he's not been playing to his best standard this season, he's currently tracking at 1-in-3 this season (small number of games so far, i know), but if he keeps that up is likely to chip in with 15 goals. That is more than prolific enough for the way we ask him to play.

Apologies! Yes, you're correct! I'd forgotten about the terrible (from Coopers position, at least!) Sheffield Utd goal. That means he's tracking over 20 goals for the season. That'll do for me! I'm pretty sure it'd do for McKenna too.
