Golf hooligans at the Ryder cup on 07:20 - Sep 28 by iamatractorboy | American golf fans have always been classless, so you may have a point. But it comes over as Trump's America in microcosm, no doubt about that. Bully, intimidate, think oneself better than everyone else, fly in the face of decency, you name it. |
…..and be nowhere near as good as you think you are and get your behind served to you in a plate by any opponent with a modicum of class.

Golf hooligans at the Ryder cup on 10:27 - Sep 28 by Shobby | I'm enjoying it too. Always like a bit of passion, clearly both sides want to win. Bearing in mind they don't get paid for playing it is a great event to watch. |
The US players are being paid. Some have said they will give it to charity, I assume they all will in the end. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/golf/articles/c3w59yl0dldo SB

I appreciate that Ryder Cup crowds are a bit more raucous, but this lot really are scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Classless sums it up! It’s no wonder they voted in a berk like Trump as President. |
I love the use of the word "berk", all the more so because I'm aware of it's etymology!

Golf hooligans at the Ryder cup on 09:11 - Sep 28 by DJR | Not surprising given this from the Guardian. "The European team were expecting abuse from the people paying to attend this Ryder Cup, but not from the people the Ryder Cup are paying to entertain them while they are here. In a dismal start to what turned into one of the most rancorous day’s play in the history of the competition, the female master of ceremonies employed to inject some life into the crowd at the 1st tee was recorded using a megaphone to lead a chant of “F8ck you Rory!” before Saturday morning’s foursomes. The PGA of America, which is organising the tournament, was approached for comment but remained oddly silent. The incident set the tone for everything that happened after. The words became a recurring chant, and by the end of the day the atmosphere around his fourball with Shane Lowry against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young had become so foul that the PGA of America had brought in a squad of state police to try to restore order." Interestingly, I don't suppose the appearance of Trump the other day helped in all this. Is this something that less divisive Presidents have every done before? |
Thanks for the clip. Behaviour like that in a sport like golf, where the outcome is dependent on spotlit moments of traditionally quiet concentrated action by individual players, is antithetical to the spirit of that sport; not much point in holding the events if they’re going to be conducted as just another undisciplined political rally. The golfing authority responsible should conduct a review and put whatever penalties they think fit in place; perhaps threatening to withdraw the USA from its role as host next time round would make their MCs and crowds think more carefully about their behaviour.

The American players have been paid through the back door in the past, initially through incredibly generous "expenses", then "charitable donations" which are tax deductible & finally, actual hard dollars, which some will feel shamed into giving to charity. Definitely a bad look from the USA golfers, given that each of them will have earned minimum of $3m this year in prize money alone. I think this sums up why Europe usually outperforms America in the Ryder Cup - the Europeans see it as an honour & privilege to be asked to play, the Americans see it as an inconvenience, especially if the match is in Europe.

Your point is well made, but fan behaviour at the Ryder Cup has steadily been getting worse ever since Europe started being competitive & Tiger Woods attracted casual American sports fans to golf. The home on both sides have generally encouraged this by whooping up the crowd. I think spotters should be there to eject fans who shout 4 letter abuse & holler on a player's backswing , although this is difficult to police. The PGA of America was brain-dead to employ that MC who started the chant of "F--k Rory McIlroy".

Golf hooligans at the Ryder cup on 03:23 - Sep 28 by The_Romford_Blue | Have to admit it’s the worst I’ve ever seen it for crowd abuse. The European players were expecting it to be horrendous and even with things going well, a few of our players have reacted to stuff. Rory and Lowry have both told the yanks to f**k off, Hovland was called a c**t on the teebox, Rose given some form of abuse, etc. It’s not great really for the sport. But I suppose that’s the Ryder cup. Albeit that’s not really an excuse I’d say. |
No it’s not an excuse. I’m guessing the knuckle dragging amoeba who do stuff like that know nothing about the game or have ever played it. Abusing players in that way is not the sport. By all means cheer your team on, show passion but there’s a time and a place. Abuse and trying to put players off is bang out of order. The solution is simple. Don’t play the Ryder Cup. Win today and then after it’s all done tell the Americans and their PGA to do one since they cannot stage the tournament properly. If they want to bask in Trump-boorishness and ignorance fine. Let them do it on their own.

Not as naive as thinking that everyone in attendance must have voted Trump. Have you really never heard of New Yorkers being rude and obnoxious?! A lot of the tickets would have been purchased locally given the large local metro population. I was the only European in my group of friends on Friday and just one out of the other 6 in my group voted red. Some democrats have money and like golf as well! Americans are just more like that in general when it comes to loud mouth patriotism. That’s probably why everyone hates them so much. To suggest that it’s all down to who is in the White House is pretty crazy to me, if you know anything about Sports fans in the North East and combine it with this event. It’s always been raucous and it adds to it and makes it even more sweet to beat them. Let’s remember there aren’t many true global events that Americans get to get all dressed up for and go to war against the other side! You can only be world champions in stuff you compete at club level against yourselves so many times lol. Go to an Islanders playoff game and see how friendly it is! Was always going to be the way for this one and the Ryder cup.

There's a difference between the behaviour at NFL or baseball games you're describing, & what went on at the RC yesterday. I sense most people feel a line's been crossed when individual golfers are having "f u (insert name)" yelled at them as they're taking a backswing. You have a point re the demographics of the crowd tho - from that paarticular clip posted, it sounded like a minority of them (maybe 10-20%?), egged on by the MC, shouting the abuse

I’m not disagreeing a line was crossed at times Saturday (being there Friday I actually think a lot of our players were thriving of it tbh) but I’m just disagreeing with a direct correlation that some are suggesting. I mean it’s Long Island and the Ryder Cup FFS! Most of the Americans were fine and drinking with the Europeans all day for what it’s worth. It was just back and forth banter. Idiots shorting right before shots seemed the problem yesterday, especially if it was getting personal. [Post edited 28 Sep 14:17]

Stokie isn't saying everyone at the golf (or even every abusive lout there) voted for Trump. Are you saying that Trump's approach to politics has no effect on breeding that base, loutish, aggressive, yobbish American culture? Because that appears to be the nature of your defence of it.

I’m not defending the personal abuse just before shots, stop making stuff up. I just wish everyone would stop blithering on about heckling at a New York Ryder cup being a direct correlation to the president. It’s quite clearly not, as I’ve outlined plenty, you guys are obsessed with a narrative. You certainly don’t want a Wimbledon final type atmosphere at the Ryder Cup either but yesterday went too far (not for the first time at this event). See Rory in September 2016 etc etc. [Post edited 28 Sep 14:36]

So you think the president is a product of that culture rather than a driving force of it. I never said you were defending the personal abuse before shots. I asked if you were stating that Trump's style and manner were not contributing to that culture. Your response makes it clear that you do believe that he is not.

Oh so you want me to get into a debate about American culture generally? Got it! I’m talking very specifically about The Ryder cup, what the thread is about and what I just attended, an area I know pretty well, so I am happy to offer my insight on it. You can take it for what it’s worth, I guess. That’s the issue, trying to bring politics into every single thing regarding behavior. The tournament has been like this for years over here and when you combine it with being hosted on Long Island, I’m not surprised in the slightest that it’s even more raucous and gone over the top. American golf fans at this event have shown a lack of decorum long before 45/47! They embrace the being hated. Just like England fans have on the world football stage before. The USA don’t often get to go into a major tournament as a patriotic force, they just keep to themselves when it comes to sports. It’s basically like attending a July 4th BBQ and taking on some Europeans at the same time. It’s what actually makes it quite fun tbh, especially when we beat them.

The clientele for this event and the environment for the European players would have been exactly the same whoever won last November. A Nassau county Ryder Cup crowd is not some major deep dive into contemporary American Culture (In my opinion at least). [Post edited 28 Sep 15:13]
