Matteo Sereni; played just 25 games. Cost 4.5million.

There are players who never played much for us. Either brought in as cheap punts and squad players or they got injured early on. Cameron Stewart, Bajner, Skard, Malarczyk, Civelli, LePen, Ogbene, for example.

There are players who cost a lot of money relative to our then finances/position and never really delivered. Lee Martin, Joe Pigott, Finidi, Sereni, Greaves, Sam Parkin.

There are players who may have been OK on the pitch, but were detrimental off it, reducing their value for us. Paul Taylor, Michael Chopra, JET, Sereni (again).

Karic was definitely not over £1m - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/i/ipswich_town/931049.stm
At the time I thought he was a reasonably cheap squad player whilst we were in the prem. Didn't ever expect big things from him

The correct answer is Le Pen, but Priskin and Taylor were also terrible wastes of money, as were most of our 'big money' signings around that time like Lee Martin, and to a lesser extent David Norris

taylor was a different level of disaster to priskin, at least we got 50-odd games out of priskin, and a few goals (including the arsenal one). taylor was dreadful, even if you overlook the reputational damage and headaches around his conviction

We got plenty of game time out of Priskin. He just couldnt hit a barn door.

And was mostly offside.

I've no idea what we paid for Chopra, but given we bailed him out financially (I'm adding allegedly as a precaution), I can't think of many worse value than that charlatan.
Quite easily tops my least favourite player list.

He actually wasn’t rubbish. He was a good keeper.

Great shot stopped, appalling on crosses not much use in early noughties football

The only Muff in Town.

How much did we pay for Luka Civelli? About a million quid? 17 games, most from the bench i think post rehab and left on a free. Horrific injury and a great shame for him and us

Stuart Slater is high up there in relative terms.

Yeah, 750k on him at a time when we didn’t really spend money was a big deal that didn’t work out.

He is 27 / 28 I reckon, so that is the end of him, with us. Big hit.

Twenty eight, on the way back from serious injury, played the entire game for Sheffield United on Saturday. The loan spell is probably either going to bring him up to a fitness level that makes him a contender for a place in our squad in January or seals him a permanent move with a fee from the Blades. I don't think we can take a view on how much that eight million transfer fee will really cost Town yet.

at least he was free (then we cloned him and sold him to coleraine for a profit!)

He was on £15k per week though?

Probably cost us £2.3m in wages and never played.

Just saw something on Facebook about Sereni, and a comment referred to his prosecution for child-related offences. I can't recall ever having heard about this but then I am getting old. According to wikipedia the allegations were sexual and related to his own child, and he was convicted, but his conviction was annulled on appeal. I have seen elsewhere that the conviction was overturned because of territorial jurisdictional issues. It doesn't seem that any retrial proceeded.

Certainly puts the importance of the Lazio friendlies into perspective, regardless of the true facts of the matter.

We're on the brink of Greaves taking no.1 spot at £15m for a Championship defender.

Fifteen Million.

Mind blowing.

Before you start crying, I'll give him until May but here and now I think he takes this award.

I think the main problem with serenifinidi was that after coming 5th we got relegated with them as our big signings.
The loss of income from all that might make them the worst.

The Ogbene thing is skewed because of inflation so not a fair comparison.

Presumably this is just a personal dislike, because you can't be putting him in there based on ability/performance.

Scored 14 goals in his first season. Not earth shattering obviously, but respectable.

don't think we can get him back in january, but you're right that a good season, will bump his fee up at the very least

He gets a podium place on mine.

Lee Bowyer's conviction for a racist attack in a fast food shop before he signed for us (as well as "being nearby on the night a couple of Leeds Youth Team players nearly kicked an Asian student to death") make him by far the signing that nearly made me walk away from ITFC permanently.

I wasn't impressed with us signing Ben Thatcher after his on pitch violence against Pedro Mendes, either.

Obviously neither of them were terrible players for us, but both people who I am sad are associated with our club.

Edit: Mendes had been autocorrected to Mendes, wrongly.

that's ridiculous, he's a 25 year old centre back who's already been in a championship team of the season, nobody serious would be writing him off at his age!

I just saw Lee Martin walking down the road, wearing a big coat with the collar up, a flat cap on his head and one of those plastic Groucho Marx glasses/nose/moustache disguise sets, desperately hoping nobody recognises him and mentions him in this thread.

But he was good in the Pre season friendly at Newmarket Town !
