There was - it went from awful to OK. But it did take half a season of not quite clicking (plus the summer) for things to start working really well.

Yes thats how I remember it. If I recall, the turning point was after a 0-0 draw away to Bristol Rovers. After that game we went on our amazing run of 13 wins in 15. And that was in February of the season following his initial appointment!

Our spending power relative to the rest of league 1 was similar. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That was a bit later than I was thinking of. We had the second half of the 2021-22 season first, in which we drew and won a fair few matches, but things still weren't working right. Frequently found scoring difficult. Yes there were some personnel changes over the following summer (notably Walton, Harness and Davis coming in, Norwood and Kenlock leaving), but a lot of McKenna honing his style and shaping the team had been done in that period. We started off very brightly in 2022-23, winning 11 out of 17 games in the League up to the end of October. Then we had a major slump over the winter, winning only 4 from the next 14 up to that draw at Bristol Rovers. After which things really moved on up.

Wonder if the same people who abused Morsy to his face after that Bristol Rovers game were also complaining when we sold him.

The instant impact was as much McGreal as anyone else who steadied them after that lame effort at Charlton. For the 23 games McKenna was in charge there were 11 wins and 4 defeats. Plenty of narrow results and a smattering of thrashings dished out, but notably the defence tightened up and conceded only 12 goals. We finished 11th on 70 points - actually pretty similar to the level of point gathering we’ve managed so far this season. We had better, more expensive players than the rest in that season too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021%E2%80%9322_Ipswich_Town_F.C._season I guess the biggest difference was that back then there was a lot of love for the new regime, no sense of entitlement and people were far more prepared to support the players as the team came together. Not now. Instant success demanded individually and collectively or get the treatment.
Our promotion winning sides TOOK TIME to gel and get up to speed (n/t) on 13:00 - Oct 1 with 170 views | SE1blue | I think it’s fair to say that Burley’s playoff teams had post-Christmas runs that’s propelled them up the league once a new year had started. But those teams always felt like they were being tweaked or improved by additions. Yea, we’ve bought new players, but we have players who have been with us a relatively long time continuing to make very familiar mistakes. I’m far from worried, and think we will make it happen, but I think it’s OK for people to question why a highly talented squad are still making some very basic errors and occasionally looking like strangers.

Our promotion winning sides TOOK TIME to gel and get up to speed (n/t) on 13:00 - Oct 1 with 167 views | patrickswell | Away from home, we currently look a little like George Burley’s teams in those late 90s seasons, where over the first half of the season, some promising approach play was cancelled out by poor finishing, all while getting punished for a lapse in concentration. Then, from Christmas to May onwards, it would click and we’d rack up wins on the road to motor up the table. I suspect this will go on for a few more weeks before we see it start to turn.
