A shout out for that ref today.... 15:21 - Oct 5 with 1132 viewsArnieM

I think ges been one of the best refs at PR in a long time. I think he got most things right. Given hes not had any? Championship experience, I thought he handled the game largely very compently....

What do others think?

Agree. He didn't try to steal the show. Fortunately, we won so we didn't have to complain about the disallowed goal.

Yup, a couple of the refs we've had more recently would've been throwing yellows out left, right and centre in the first half today. I thought he was extremely balanced in his decisions and willing to let the the right amount go! Well done fella! Can we have you every week?

Honestly thought he and the linos were bad.

Throws and goal kicks to the wrong team
Philogene non goal was not a foul by hirst was more on hirst. Many others where nodge got the rub of the green imo.

But in comparison to some other refs he was better. But cant say I thought he did well.

He went with a “let them play” attitude which is what you want in a derby.

Agree. Let the game flow when it needed to.

Should have sent Mattsson off and I think the disallowed goal was a 50/50 tussle (but you never win them as an attacking team).

He was superb, might be a weird comparison but he reminded me of how NFL refs change their stance in the playoffs and don’t get flag happy and let them play. He done the same for the derby.

Didn’t want to make it about him but also let them know he was in control for anything borderline. Incredibly consistent as well and wasn’t conned my anyone from either side going over too easy.

Think he got most of the big calls right, Hirst and Darling probably not but that’s hard in real time as an official. Maybe it was evened out our first goal anyway as possible arm in there?

Either way, he was so good, those games are hard to officiate.

He certainly let a lot go, and don't have too many complaints on the whole, although I'm surprised (as the ex-Budgie striker on commentary was) that he had a problem with Hirst for the disallowed goal. It was a tussle where Hirst could have got a free kick at first, and ended with Hirst giving their CB a shove, but 50:50 for me.

Nice to see it flow though.

Totally agree. We rarely praise referees but credit where it’s due, he managed the occasion very well, and got most decisions spot on. He didn’t make it about him and let the game flow as it should have done.

Hardly noticed him, which to me is always a sign of a good referee. No nonsense, allowed the silly things to go, didn’t get dragged into early yellow cards but likewise pulled up what he needed to.

It was a push by Hirst, correct decision from the ref

I looked at the back of the programme and said to the people I was with, "I'm surprised they've not got a Premier ref for this game".

If it was Football Manager, I think it'd say "had a good game but could have been accused of being biased towards the hosts with a number of decisions".

I thought that he handled the 'four in a row' corner farce very well too.

I liked the fact that for the first bad(ish) foul in the game he just told the Norwich player to calm down and not do it again. He totally understood it was a local derby with emotions high, but importantly he had made it clear to every player on the pitch not to let the occasion result in anything silly.

I thought the same.

I thought he was wrong with the foul by Hirst. My comment was had that been the other way around he was never giving the free kick to us and a red card to the defender. It was very much two players wrestling and something he let go everywhere else on the pitch.

I also thought he was sensible with the use of his cards (although both teams probably made that fairly easy for him too).

One assistant seemed to only have one arm during the first half but you can't blame the referee for that.

Yes Kirk only joined the FL list in 2022 & had refereed only 15 Championship games. I think he's only in his mid 30s & on this showing, he could be a referee who's fast tracked into the Premier League. We're obviously biased as we've just won a Derby, but I admired his sensible control, ignoring appeals for non-existent fouls & reluctant to wave cards around for slightly mistimed tackles. Yes, for Hirst's "goal", he was initially held by the Budgie defender & then wrested his way free & pulled him over so arguably it could have been a free kick to Town & then advantage, but I think most refs would have taken the soft option of the free kick to the defence.
