Who do you consider our best player? Top three: 00:45 - Oct 7 with 4180 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

We’ve so many really good players but not one standout. It’s not a year where we’ve a Delap for example who you just knew from early doors was top drawer and a future England player.

Whereas now we’ve more players of a higher level but not one standout superstar.

Philogene arguably will be there and is our next Hutch. Azor IS 100% the next Kante.

But I’m going to say for me it’s Cajuste.

Let’s have your 1-2-3 (I’ll do the maths in a couple days).

1st = 4 points
2nd = 2 points
3rd = 1 point

Poll: Would you take a draw tonight if offered right now?

Each to their own but can't see how Egeli or Kipre could be in our top 3. Both been bit part players so far this season, for understandable reasons, but still.

It's funny that muccletonjoe has chosen Egeli and Kipre. Just a month and a half ago he was agreeing with SlimTeaBoy that we'd had "an appalling transfer window" that "will ruin our chances".

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I wonder how many from this thread now have Philogene in their top 3;

Philogene stats from today make for ugly reading ... by The_Flashing_Smile 2 Oct 21:34
No-one's suggesting going overboard. Some are suggesting give players time, which you weren't doing when this thread started;

"I remember people telling me he was going to cook it up, and tear this league apart on, along with Jack Clarke when I said they aren’t good enough."

This was 4 games in... where you were declaring you'd been proved right against those other fools. Four fecking games.

You can trot out the "game of opinions" cliche as much as you want, your opinion to write him off and say he's not good enough, four games in, is a bobbins opinion. In my opinion.

That thread already got resurrected once. Must we keep recycling it to show people up?

In your opinion (that you’re not even sure of?!).

Obviously several other people have a different one to you, at least about Kipre anyway.

Every year, since forever, we have people not being patient and slating players and/or the team, the recruitment, the manager etc. etc., before giving any of them a decent chance. So I think it is VERY necessary to remind people not to go so early.

I know I'm fighting a battle that's probably unwinnable, but I live in hope that one day it might sink in that patience is a virtue.

That doesn't stop me still riding high on Sunday's win! The two are unconnected.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

1. Leif Davis
2. Jaden Philogene
3. Azor Matusiwa.

Interesting that almost everyone seems to agree on those three in some order.

Yes I would go for those three too.

At present, in this order:

1 Jaden Philogene
2 Azor Matusiwa
3 Leif Davis

But I concede that there's a lot of recency bias re Philogene, and Matusiwa going second is probably just to show (pretend) how very much I understand football, and how important it is to have a player that does the simple things well in the middle of the park. Also his smile is great.

Davis was our best player last time we were in the Champ, in my view, and is getting back to being effective going forward whilst not having too much of a torrid time at the back. He's also now a really experienced pro for this club, and is likely to surpass Mogga in terms of Town appearances this season.

I like Cajuste, but (a) I don't quite get him like others do, and (b) it is frustrating how he can't play a whole game, seemingly. Although point (b) totally dissolves now that we have Nunez!!! (In your heaaaaaaad....!) One of my highlights of the derby was seeing John Wark singing that song even before kick off!

I can't include Egeli or Kipre. I love them both. Bigly. But they have not played enough for us to be able to make that call. What I would say is that I was DELIGHTED when the former got into the starting 11 over McAteer and when Kipre kept his place ahead of Greaves. No offence.

Egeli and/or Kipre may very well make this top 3 list come Christmas or the end of the season, either because they become 'fan favourites' or because they are just class. So far they've shown a decent amount of both, but it's just too early.

I stand by my early contribution in that thread for the record. 😅 I don't believe he was scrapped by Villa because of an attitude problem; I think he just didn't reach the levels demanded by Emery. I read very many contributions by Villa fans in which they all wished him well and couldn't fault his work ethic.

Obviously there is a gap between Champions League hopeful performance levels and Championship promotion hopeful performance levels. I'd be lying if I said I'm certain Philogene will go on to play in the top half of the PL for most of his career but I do think he's our best player. Maybe I'm being pessimistic with the logical conclusion which may be drawn from this comment but we truly were humbled last season (and then some).

Guess people are confident of a future in which those two go on to excel, climbing above others who've made more important contributions at this stage. In Kipre's case, those who've named him may wish to substitute "go on to" for "continue to". I anchored my contribution to this season's end of year awards but, perhaps more accurately, answered who I thought had been our best players overall so far.

It might have been helpful if the OP had defined what he meant by “best”, but it’s maybe been more interesting that he didn’t, as it’s led to a range of views.

Not sure why I’m being focussed on to disagree with when there’s other lieft field posts on the thread, including a wild one which hasn’t even been mentioned let alone disagreed with.

Hope the thread doesn’t degenerate into argument/s.

Agree. And if you meant me re Kipre, I did actually say “he could go on to be an absolute rock for us.”. I had also looked up his stats and illustrious previous footballing history, as well as considering his potential for improving a defence that has been weak for a while and in need of bringing up to the same level as other areas of the pitch.

Kipre is a huge unit who would seem well suited to the Championship & may be more effective at dealing with long balls than Greaves, although he's better on the ball than initially thought after seeing him play at Bromley. I raised my eyebrows when he regained his place ahead of Greaves on Sunday, but it seems McKenna got that right & maybe Kipre can retain his form & place in the starting XI. Credit to McKenna for not feeling he has to start Greaves, having paid £15m+ for him.

Matusiwa - Big boots to fill as a player and has just grown with every game
Davis - A real comeback season and with a new role in the inverse full back - taken to it very well
Philogene - Confidence ebbed and has now returned.

IMO, anyone thinking McKenna feels compelled to select a player based on what was paid for them, is deluded.

McKenna will choose who he thinks is best for each opponent, based on strengths, fitness, calendar, etc
