Now that there is no doubt that Andrew is a liar 12:39 - Oct 13 with 3972 views | bluelagos | as well as a nonce, is it time we got rid of the lot of them? Even Lizzie, supposed wonderful Monarch was happy to fund his covering up his crimes. Or are we cool to be ruled by a family that prioritises it's own PR before all else?

Now that there is no doubt that Andrew is a liar on 12:44 - Oct 13 with 2403 views | homer_123 | We seem quite happy for the Country to be led by similar people (i.e. those with a distinct lack of moral fibre) and look on course to vote in a party that sees us move about as far right as possible. So, comparatively speaking, what difference does the Royal Family make?

Now that there is no doubt that Andrew is a liar on 12:54 - Oct 13 with 2325 views | NedPlimpton | Usually I'd be completely for the abolishment of the monarchy, but given the potential for a Reform government and Farage thinking he can do whatever he wants a la trump, it could be time for the monarchy to prove their worth and stop anything too outrageous happening

Farage or no Farage, I don't want the Royals anywhere near our so called democratic system.

I'm not sure who I'd like near our democratic process less, Farage or the royals. At least the queen was anti apartheid

There’s nothing quite so daft, or medieval as the concept of hereditary power. We scoff at dictators like Putin and Starmer, yet the Royals although limited in power, are completely anti democratic/anti meritocracy.
Now that there is no doubt that Andrew is a liar on 13:34 - Oct 13 with 2027 views | MattinLondon | I would love for the monarchy to be abolished but let’s face it, that’s not going to happen. The institution is far too popular. The next best thing is for the royal family to be limited to just the immediate family with the HRH tag just for them. Their finances to be published with every penny accounted for and with them paying tax like they are normal. Andy is an entitled nonce and his mummy helped to protect him but both Harry and William seem to be quite down-to-earth people. If I were a royalist I’d feel that it was unfair to judge the rest of that family to Andrew.

Now that there is no doubt that Andrew is a liar on 13:49 - Oct 13 with 1933 views | Ace_High1 | Yes it should have been phased out when the Queen passed, that would have been the best way of doing it rather than spend another £££££ on Kings coronation. At least lets see Andrew get tried for his crimes and put away, at least it will feel like there is a bit of punishment for the them rather than rising above the law and being above any form of penalty.

Because it's probably a cheaper way of having a constitutional Head of State than moving to a Presidency. They have estates, investments and property to offset much of the cost of running the institution (the Sovreign Grant - which replaced the Civil List in 2012 - is paid for out of the Crown Estates at a rate of 15%). Whether you think that's a good enough reason to keep it, is another matter.

So if you are only staying local, you can buy the OS maps for your location, use the code that comes with it and then that area is good (for life)...which may be good for the OP But anyone who walks around the UK regularly....is brilliant imho and well worth the annual fee.

That's such a weak argument. I would much rather have an elected Ru Paul than an unelected Charles.

Why not use the Crown Estates to pay for the new Head of State? It is not personal property of the Royal Family like some of the Royal Family's holdings. Let the Royal family retain their personal lands like the Duchy of Lancaster and Cornwall (but without special exemptions) and transfer the rights of the Crown and Crown Estate to whoever is President (or simply buy them for £1).

I used to be a strong republican. I've mellowed for a number of reason. You can think it's weak but i'd rather the soft power of the royals than some national embarrassment likee Joey Essex or someone from Love Island elected by people thinking it's great bantz.

But you’re assuming that that ‘soft power’ will always be exercised by relatively sane and intelligent people. With a hereditary system, there’s always the chance that a future Andy (national embarrassment) could well find themselves on the throne. At least with a Joey Essex PM they can always be voted out.

Better to just abolish democracy completely then? As for this soft power nonsense, what does that even mean?

The existence of a Royal Family is a national embarrassment and a stain on Britain. As for ways of picking a Head of State, I'd rather run the risk of doing it democratically and occasionally getting a clown versus relying on some random rich family's inbred genetics.

I just think it's a myth propagated by those who wish to maintain an outdated system. I see no actual evidence of it whatsoever.

Technically, the Crown Estates are the personal property of the Monarch. It might be possible to redefine that as the property of the state - given the 1760 exchange was to enable those resources to be used to finance the country's government (as prior to that, but without the royal control).

Rightly or wrongly, I've been impressed with the soft power in relation to Trump and Ukraine. They've shamed themselves with Prince Andrew though. This situation demonstrates we still need curtail their power and he needs to be arrested, even if the monarchy is to remain. [Post edited 13 Oct 15:00]
