....from Villa Park for the match against Maccabi Tel Aviv, due to "public safety concerns and the ability to deal with protests".

What a ridiculous world we live in.

This follows on from the anti semitic attacks in Amsterdam earlier this year.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

That sounds awfully like you are excusing what was essentially a "Jew hunt" in a European city.

From what I read about it, it was appalling on both sides and there’s no need to downplay the vile actions of either group.

It was widely reported that the Macabi fans behaviour was pretty awful, removing Palestinian flags, damaging property where they were hanging and singing pro-IDF and anti-Arab songs, some of which were utterly awful.

Now that clearly doesn't excuse any targeting of Jewish people that happened later but you can't just ignore the Macabi fans contribution to the issues.

Yes. The behavior of a minority of their fans was absolutely disgusting. That doesn't excuse a coordinated attack on anyone suspected of being Jewish or "helping Jews",

If, for example, a minority of Al-Hilal fans behaved in the appalling manner that the Maccabi would that excuse a bunch of racists co-ordinating attacks on anyone suspected of being a Muslim or "helping Muslims"?

Feels a bit dodgy from a sporting integrity standpoint given the new european format (as Villa don’t go back to Israel for a return game like they would have done previously).

Who ignored the behaviour of the Macabi fans? At the time I condemned their disgusting racist behaviour and genocidal chanting.

Your second point is bizarre. There should be no "but" after "that clearly doesn't excuse any targeting of Jewish people".

Quite hypocritical of a response, no? I don't deny that some of the reported actions were antisemitic but you tar the entire thing as such.

If it's Maccabi fans doing racism it's a bad egg, if it's anyone else they're all antisemitic. Do you consider Israelis above reproach?

Certainly a worrying precedent that local police can determine whether away fans attend matches. Where does that end?

If there is an issue due to the behaviour of Maccabi fans then UEFA should take action.

Otherwise, it seems reasonable that if the police genuinely think they cannot safely oversee a match with both sets of fans then the match is behind closed doors.

Might be the most weaselly post I've ever seen.

Maybe you should respond to the people who are discussing things in good faith rather than cry racism and suggest the thread is closed.

Hmm. Yes you definitely didn’t think this would be provocative.

Israel and its clubs should be out of all competitive football anyway, given they have been breaking FIFA and UEFA regulations for years for playing Israeli FA sanctioned football on the West Bank.
