For me, it's time to tweak the formation 12:14 - Oct 19 with 1717 viewscbower

I know there are those who will say McKenna doesn't play with a strict formation and we're very fluid. To some extent I see this but mostly in terms of Leif having the licence to virtually abandon his defensive responsibilities at time and go wherever he wants along the left (and sometimes the left centre) of the park. In terms of fluidity that's all I see to be honest and that can bring a whole heap of problems, making us massively lop-sided and vulnerable to the counter attack.
We effectively play 4231with wide forwards stay wide and looking to cut in, 2 midfielders expected to cover lots of ground and a central striker working his nuts off, trying to bring others into the game. The central 10 is expected to be a creator, pulling the strings, threading balls through, spreading and stretching the play. Rarely are our two pivot midfielders asked to get forward beyond our front 4. Our right back has limited attacking intent and when we go forward, predominantly down the left, the remaining defenders shuffle across to cover. I think that's it but feel free to correct me.
Well by and large this season it's stuttering to say the least. Hirst is consistently isolated. Our right side offers virtually no threat. Yes Philogene has scored five belters and Jack Clarke has 4 to his name but our wide players don’t seem to want to take a man on in general and the threat from players in the central 10 position has been negligible. In central midfield, Matusiwa has grown into his role and for periods in the games he and Cajuste have looked good but in no way consistently. Our substitutions are predictable (sometimes effective) but they rarely, especially when chasing a game , change the pattern if we are struggling.
All of the above would suggest we need to try something different. We simply do not have the correct central 10 in our ranks to play this system. It might not be McKenna's preferred system but maybe 532 or 433 would make better use of our resources, give Leif the ability to get forward but offer him the cover at the back when doing so. Whatever happens, I think something needs to change. Having the ability of Nunez on the bench for 70 minutes game after game ( or alternatively Cajuste) is a waste. Playing either Szmodics or Akpom out of position in the central 10 wastes their talents and having spent all but £30 million on Walle-Egeli and McAteer to virtually ignore the right side as an attacking outlet is another problem.

Won't happen but I agree, we have bought good players but not for the way we play in some cases. Hackney would have been ideal as a CM due to the ground he covers, Jens can't do that never mind last 90 mins. The whole right hand side is very disjointed as is the link up between the 10 and striker/wingers.

Not sure what the answer is but I'd say only the left side of the team works at the moment, elsewhere very unconvincing.

Our system and tactics are stats and percentages driven...
Shouldn't really be measured over any "single" game..

They've been proven successful over an entire season, at Champ' level, already..

Take the first 3-4 games out of the picture this season, whilst we were adjusting to life, with plenty of turmoil behind the scenes..
And the last 6 games are auto promotion form..

There is nothing wrong with what KM is doing atm.
Just a few individuals that aren't quite at it atm.

Wowzers, we lost a tight game, by the odd goal, to a team currently in top two, at their place under the lights.?
There's no need for a full autopsy. Imo. Perhaps a boot up the behind for one or two after Friday.

We score that penalty. And the conversation is totally different..

Relax.

Don't get me on to penalties lol, we have not had a convincing taker for many a year now. There surely must be one player in the side who can do it.

Our midfield is often being over run. This season, last season... we need three in the middle...which means s change from McKenna's default position.

So when IS ge going yo try Plan B. Has he got one?

I think Nunez could be slightly advanced in a 3 and sacrifice the 10?

100% this imo

No need for the 10 when we don't actually have one.

4-3-3 would allow a midfield of Matusiwa central but just behind Cajuste and Núñez roaming behind a front three of, say, Philogene, Hirst and Jack Clarke / Walle Egeli / McAteer. We would still have Taylor and Humphreys to come off the bench and replace Cajuste and Núñez if things were not working out for them, we would have Azón, Smozdics and Akpom for the final half hour refresh and push on.

A couple of things I did feel were different about Friday was that Furlong was getting forward more but maybe Egeli is too green to make enough of that support at present, and Davis had his hands fuller than usual defensively so wasn't quite supporting Philogene in the way we know and love. In turn this made Philogene far less effective. Rob Edwardes is experienced enough to know how another team works and what to do to stuff that up.

Poll: Jack Clarke is

We don't need to change the system, we need to execute better in front of goal (mainly away from home) and cut out some of our sloppy mistakes. The system is fine and already enables us to flex and adapt during games as needed.

Thing about the formation Thing is i get it's what has got KM success

But. Is it a formation that would work for town if we got back up. If no. Then should we be playing it whilst we try to get back up. Wouldn't we want to be doing something that we would replicate in the prem.

Jack Clarke is pretty nerveless at taking them. Problem is he is not always on the pitch when we get them.

We've got an extra man in midfield a few different ways this season already without sacrificing the system that did us well in the promotion seasons. We've done this when Leif has come inside and the Philogene or Clarke has held the width or when Greaves has got much further forward.

They're also examples of trying something different - almost like a Plan B

Whilst true, there's potential issues we've suffered doing that

Having the likes of Davis inverting leaves a gap
having greaves roam led to a conceded goal etc etc

on friday, we kinda needed a third midfielder to able to pretty much look after hackney
