Not for injuries I'm not sure McKenna would have tried. Sir Bobby also stumbled on it in the 1986 world cup Bryan Robson injured Peter Reid came in we got to the semis and looked so much better balanced.

But woeful at being bypassed when pressing in the 2 CM roles. 10 suits him in that way.

The Robson hating England fans (and there were many) complained Robson had his favourites and it didn't matter how cr@p they played Robson always selected them. Too scared to drop them was the complaint and/or 'they must know something about Robson's private life'. Byran Robson and Ray Wilkins were under the most pressure. Both had been through a difficult time in terms of performances. Many fans wanted both out. First game against Portugal, England were cr@p. The Robson haters, highlighted AGAIN.. too scared to drop his favs, Robson and Wilkins. Next game against Morocco, no better but Wilkins was sent off and Robson injured. Both didn't play the next game against Poland, and England had a great performance. The Robson haters loved it, the old told you so. 'Finally Robson is forced to drop both, as every fan has been saying for months'. |
Fans knowing better than the manager! Whoever is England manager they get abuse for not winning everything.

Szmodics really isn't a number 9. Akpom is a versatile forward who has played right across the frontline throughout his career. They've both played lots of football as 10s so they really aren't square pegs in round holes.

I don't disagree about either playing 10 roles but it if it' square pegs round holes really depends on how their 10 roles compare to the one we're asking of them... Has our 10 for example like sammy S for blackburn, really been about advancing further than the striker? i don't feel it has Akpom, i don't know enough about his previous clubs other than the highlights available for boro at this level and majority of his goals etc were in the box, so he was quite advanced. I suppose the questions are really, did either of them drop between halfway and their own box to pick the ball up and spray it around.

| Joe Fairs on 13:31 - Nov 2 by TractorJack | It's too early to call this imo. We've played just as well if not better at times this season without Nunez in the 10. |
Indeed, and didn't think Nunez was particularly impressive aside from the free-kicks and role in the third goal. I don't think he's forward-thinking enough in open play, in terms of getting himself into the box compared with Szmodics.

| Joe Fairs on 13:06 - Nov 2 by Herbivore | In our two promotion seasons we had Chaplin in the 10 role and he scored 40 plus goals across two seasons. He was nothing like Nunez as a player. It's more that neither Szmodics or Akpom have fully adapted to the role yet. |
Chaplin has a much better eye for a pass and touch than Szmodics. Likely Akpom too. It’s a question of attributes, nothing to do with being used to it.

depends how the run goes, if we carry on winning with him there, then perhaps that need of the 10 getting in the box isn't a requirment over being able to spray the ball around. if moves like the third goal become the norm, the it's a perfect role for him, and having him on the pitch for set pieces is a big plus as no one else really comes close to it but also like some have mentioned prior, sammys and akpom made a lot of runs in behind, if teams sit back, are either of those suited or do you need a nunez or cajuste in that role to try and break the block. | Joe Fairs on 17:15 - Nov 2 with 346 views | franz_tyson | I've always thought we should try to go for a MassnMorsy style partnership. A younger version. And Matusiwa fits the bill for one half.... but Cajuste and Nunez doesn't fit the other half. And Taylor doesn't either..... but he has a bit more energy and a little bit more bite than the other two. I can see Nunez being handy as a makeshift 10 and having obvious dead-ball skills, but I can't see Cajuste having the energy needed for a 10 (or as an 6 or 8 as well). Bit of a luxury player, for me. I'd definitely be in for a new CM in January. Ive heard someone ask if we could offload Akpom, but id prefer to offload Cajuste and bring in a proper CM. For the moment, stick with Taylor.

If he scores two a game like that then he can definitely stay in! I'm not convinced Kieran would see him as his number 10 long term.

Funny how people see things differently. I thought he did well finding space in front of their back 4 and linking up play. Fwiw I think the team look more cohesive with him and Taylor played as per yesterday

Chappers had a whole season of being fairly underwhelming for us before things clicked for him and he had two great years in our rise to the Prem. He'd played most of his football prior to joining us as a striker and took a while to adapt but we gave him time and reaped the rewards. We don't seem willing to give players time anymore, even though in Akpom's case he's looked a lot better in his last couple of outings.
