I guess it depends on how you value NHS doctors.

He's calling out resident doctors (formerly known as junior doctors) who, despite a large pay rise last year, are insisting on another one. They had a point last year, much less of one now. Anecdotally, fewer of them are striking this time anyway.

| Streeting calling out the BMA on 10:35 - Nov 14 with 1006 views | ElderGrizzly | Government are in a no-win situation tbh. Doctors in 'westernised' countries such as Canada, Australia etc are in short supply and pay much better. Canada are about to start a campaign to bring in 4,000 doctors targeting the UK in particular. If we don't pay them well enough and provide a duty of care they are going to leave. | | | |

Ironically their shifts are being filled by agency doctors at huge cost

Not all of them, plenty by experienced doctors doing even more hours.

If they do get more money, it ought to be linked to an exit-cost to repay the high training costs, in the event of them pissing off to Canada / wherever. [Post edited 14 Nov 11:14]

We are stealing poorer countries doctors in return on a huge scale. Last month, GMC revealed that 51% of doctors in training now hold a non-UK qualification as their primary education.

Indeed, but that's a separate issue and shouldn't stop us doing what we can to protect the fruits of our own training.

I wouldn't describe the rewards as "huge". It takes doctors 5 years to train and several more years before they are earning a good wage but even then, as pointed out in this thread, it's below wages in comparable countries. They could earn a lot more working as financial traders with a lot less student debt. We just don't value anyone in this country who isn't making money for the super rich. It's the same in other sectors. Pay for lecturers in the UK, for example, is rubbish compared to comparable countries despite us (still, just about) being world leading in HE and HE-led research. Unless you're lining someone richer's pockets, you don't really matter in the UK in 2025.

So, why do they choose that career? The salary and conditions are known in advance.

Cancel all outstanding student loans for Doctors, Nurses and while at it Engineers. Those who are in a position to earn more, because of their qualifications, end up paying more tax anyway.

I think if you look at a Dr's standard of living over a full career, they would be in the top few percent of wealth in this country. total guess, of course, but I'm pretty confident that would be true and if so, the rewards are relatively huge. There may be some even more wealthy people out there, but in terms of normal trades, professions and careers, they're right up there. If there's money to be found to increase wages in the NHS, then fairness would dictate you'd look after nurses and ancillary workers now, who all had a much more smaller rise than drs, but in many ways do a role just as important. We should look after the less well off, no?

Because some people are motivated by things other than money. That doesn't mean they should get stitched up though.

Why should doctors, nurses and engineers get preferential treatment?

We should be looking to restore the wages of all NHS staff who suffered years of frozen or below inflation pay rises post-2009, just as we should in other sectors that went through similar. Here is some info on doctor's salaries: https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/doctors/pay-doctors Bear in mind that many resident doctors are at that level for several years or more before they specialise and can earn more. And that's after 5 years of medical school and further on the job learning.

Student loans in my opinion need a review. There are so many people go to uni on a student loan and end up in a different industry at a lower wage and don’t even have to pay the loan back because their wage is low. I think if you use a student loan and work in the industry you went to uni for, you should get some discount on when you start paying it back or interest rates. Schools shouldn’t push kids into thinking Uni is the way, create a student debt and then not even have to pay it back because the earnings are low in what they go on to do.
