| Time for him to go I think on 21:59 - Dec 2 with 639 views | ArnieM | It’s not just this season though is it, it’s been 18 months and he’s not changed his approach one iota…… I do think he’s lost the changing room. I’ve never seen such a disinterested bunch of players and you can hardly blame the, it doesn’t matter how they play, they’re rotated out, rotated in , rotated out, rotated in. McKenna has run out of ideas it seems …. | |

| Time for him to go I think on 21:59 - Dec 2 with 642 views | WicklowBlue | Correct they are not playing for him. However if your players on the pitch are not executing what you wanted them to do? Nah, the amount of individual errors tonight was nuts. Didn't see any patterns of play whatsoever, when we got posession we just spoofed it away. Time for the rotation to stop, time to stop having 10 players behind the ball. Like Blackburn keep Azon or Hirst high up the pitch. Flooding the whole team back into the area just piles on pressure. | | | |

| Time for him to go I think on 21:58 - Dec 2 by sotd78 | This division is so tight. The only team getting away has been together and developing for at least three years. That being Coventry. We had to completely rebuild a midfield, and attack. It's hardly a surprise we're only in the mix. In exactly the same place nearly every Championship club think they too deserve to be in. The coaching set up is more than just one man... it's a whole process. We're not about to swap McKenna unless the fans get too many bedsheets out. |
In a year and a half we still don't have a midfield that controls games, as for the attack...

He has done an absolutely amazing job but he should not be immune from criticism. Even some of the greatest managers of all time have suffered downturns in their careers. |
It’s not the criticism he’s talking about, I don’t think. Criticism is fair. It’s the people saying he should be gone, and those naming absolutely ridiculous suggestions as replacements. As you say, the greatest managers of all time have had bad spells, yet they are still highly regarded.

Where does McKenna stand in this ranking? He got far & away the best squad in League 1 promoted. Our Championship season was amazing, but was that just a fluke, with momentum carrying us forward? McKenna looked out of his depth in the PL, but now he is hugely underperforming with the most expensive squad in this league. The evidence of the last 4 games is that we are not turning it around. I don't expect Town to win every week, but I expect us to look like a team. [Post edited 2 Dec 22:16]

Because people don't have the same view as yourself don't make them a budgie I said four hours before kick off what I expected and got what I expected people have to stop looking at it with rosey blue tinted glasses. Wake up smell the coffee 18 months of this Sunderland already have as many points now as we got all season in the Premiership. I don't proclaim to know the answers but McKenna will fall on his sword if not considerable improvement. And Ashton will have no say and will be under orders to change the guard.

It is fairly simple. 2023/24 KMc delivered promotion from the Championship with a special group of players. Fast forward to 2025/26, KMc hasn’t changed, but the players have. I think even you might be able to work out where the issue is, here’s your clue, it’s not McKenna. [Post edited 2 Dec 22:27]

Agreed. Southampton and Leicester, the other two relegated teams, are sitting 14th and 16th. It’s a really tough league to get out back out of, regardless of what division you’ve come from, and we’re close enough that there’s no need to bed wet. I’m old enough to remember 2002 and the same minority of fans assuming that because we’d come down from the Prem, that would should expect to go straight back up. Calling for George Burley’s sacking after less than half a season. It’s the same type of fan doing that now. It was a hard league to get out of then, and it’s a hard one to get out of now.

Apples and oranges. Southampton and Leicester this season are financial basket cases, one of which (Leics) is on a de facto transfer embargo. In contrast, how much did we spend on signings and loans this summer? Multiples of what BOTH Southampton and Leicester spent. And yet we aren't much better than them. In perspective, comparing ourselves with Southampton and Leicester makes our current performances look even $hittier.

We're 7th, only 5 points off of 2nd, lost less games than 3 of the teams currently in the play-off zone, ahead of Southampton, Leicester, & Sheffield United all of who have all been in the Prem for decent amounts of time in recent years. Still in credit as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and my favourite actress of all time was Violet Carson - she played Ena Sharples in Coronation Street.

According to Transfer Markt we’ve spent 59m this summer whilst recouping 87m. Obviously if your only question is ‘who did we buy?’, and you don’t simultaneously ask ‘and who did we lose?’ then of course you can argue that we have not got much return on our 59m. But I’d argue that that is deliberately only looking at one side of the equation, and I guess I would then question why you are doing that. As for Southampton being financial basket cases (I take your point re Leicester although I think they started from a higher base), they’ve spent (again according to Transfer Markt), just 3.3m less than us this summer; a negligible amount. And we are 7 places above them.
