Entrance of the Gladiators 16:56 - Dec 11 with 792 viewsBlacknGoldnBlue

What years was Entrance of the Gladiators used as Towns entrance music?

What other songs/ music have the club used over the years?

Wouldn't it be great to have a very Ipswich only rousing song for the players entrance that the crowd really gets behind.

Poll: Following Saints game, when will Ipswich have their next permanent signing?

Much better when the teams came out separately, usually the visitors first, to a hail of boos and abuse, followed by, sometimes up to a minute or so later, by the opening fanfare of Entrance of the Gladiators and the arrival of Town on the pitch.

Really helped to build the atmosphere before kick off.

I'm sure I remember it in the mid-90s as well.

I maintain that the Escape to Victory march would be an ideal Ipswich-specific piece of walk-out music.

Yep. Away team out. Then, the hairs on back of neck moment 'And now, sponsored by Fisons/Radio Orwell, please welcome, your team.....the Super Blues, Ipswich Town'

I'm not sure when Entry of the Gladiators stopped because I started playing football on a Saturday, started shift work etc around the first Premier League season. When I was regular again mid to late 90s, we started to get into Fat Boy Slim and Republica etc.

Also, my by then, pub habits stopped me getting into the ground much before kick off.

Yes, I remember first hearing it in the 1970s & some of the crowd seemed quite bemused (football fans dislike change) . I think we're not going back to the days of the teams coming out separately - this may be mandated somewhere.

I'd be happy with it. Football stadiums and the pregame build up are becoming too monotonous. Fans want their clubs to be unique and have an identity.

I think they stopped playing it back in the late 90s. They did stop for a while around 95 or 96 but received some complaints so brought it back for a while and only played it briefly.

It was when I started in 1968. Must be late 70s when it stopped. Probably after our FA Cup win.

As one of the many 'Towen Elders' I can confirm that Fučik's (a Check composer of note) "Entry of the Gladiators" was blurted out from the Portman Tannoy (such as it was) as the Boys in Blue entered the field from the late 50s. I remember it very well. It was, to the crowd, an exciting prelude to the forthcoming action. I even bought a copy of the sheet music in Ipswich's Queen Street - Ipswich Music Centre" was the name of the shop.

To continue: As far as I can remember, the Fučik piece was used at least to the early 70s. The away team did indeed go onto the pitch first, Then the Town ran on. It was uplifting to hear that tune blasting away. I should add that that music was also used in circuses. It gained another title - "Entry of the Clowns."
Anyway, I do think there is a need for one particular musical theme to be played at PR for the entry of our present gladiators, preferably not a "pop" tune, to coin a phrase. The music should transcend popular culture. Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyres" would do nicely, for example.

Call Me Ted, just isn't a rousing tune. It's great when sung by the crowd mid-match (usually away I find), but the actual record they play at PR is too low sound-wise so feels a bit slow and boring
