Been that way for years. I came very close to killing one near Banham once. Cars with lights in the other direction. Fairly narrow lane. Doing about 50. Literally invisible until the last oncoming vehicle passed me and the glare of their lights was gone. Missed him by about 3 feet with a last second swerve.

I'm a keen cyclist, and other cyclists that ride bicycles without lights does my head in. Halfords have a set of lights (front and back) for just £5-00. They won't be the brightest lights but they will help others see you. I just don't understand why anyone, knowing they'll be riding a bike in the dark, don't buy lights. And, unfortunately, those that don't put lights on their bikes only encourages the car driver against cyclist aggression which, whilst is understandable, isn't fair on those of us that do use lights. Sorry, but flashing lights are far more visible than non flashing ones so are much safer. However, cyclists do sometimes point them up too high, which they shouldn't.

When I had to learn the Highway Code (many years ago) one of the early sections stated that road-using vehicles should display one or more STEADY forward-facing white lights and one or more STEADY rear-facing red lights. The ONLY permitted use of flashing lights was for indicating the driver's intention to turn/change lanes. This applied to ALL road-using vehicles (bicycles included) and, to some extent, pedestrians (who were optionally exempt from carrying the rear-facing red light).

Yes, they are against the Highway Code, but are safer and longer lasting. What are you going to do?

motorists - daytime running lights do not mean you have rear lights on ffs

If you're a delivery rider and doing it for profit and are caught, you should haven your bike confiscated and the Uber/ JustEat/ Deliveroo outfit fined. There's no excuse.

Sadly, some of these ultra-bright headlights are dipped, but still blind the on-coming driver.

Exactly this. My CatEye AMPP800 points at the ground about 15 feet in front of me and flashes. Without the flash, and with the insanely bright headlights these massive armoured SUVs and other cars seem to have these days, my life is in significant danger every time I ride at night. The arrogant way some car drivers treat vulnerable cyclists puts everybody in danger.

50mph down a narrow lane seems a bit too quick to be honest. Cyclists without lights are future organ donors.

THIS, esp when they're whizzing round blind bends down steep single-track lanes at 40mph ...

Deliveroo riders on electric bikes in Glasgow are a nightmare. No lights, go through red traffic lights, go the wrong way in a one way street.

Same here in Nottingham. If you or I ran a business with such disregard for safety we'd be for the high jump. Not sure how or why these guys/ gals or their 'employers' get a blind eye turned.

Yeah. Me too. And I'm also a car driver, a motorcyclist and a pedestrian. Not all at the same time! I not only have lights on my bicycle after dark but also wear a reflective jacket. And I can adjust the main beam manually just like a car's dipping headlights. I also despair at (fellow) cyclists using the road when there is an immediately adjacent designated cycle path!
