He certainly did a lot of damage but, at the same time, it's a lot more than people sometimes get for murder and other more heinous offences. Which, on balance, probably suggests it's about right.

He ploughed his car into a crowd of people - he ran over pushchairs, prams as well as countless numbers on the ground. It’s miraculous that his actions didnt result in massive casualties. I think that the judge was quite lenient. [Post edited 16 Dec 14:36]

When you think those 2 boys in Leamington who raped that 15 year old girl got less between them. I'm sure other offenses which are arguably worse get less than that.

It's pretty lucky he didn't kill anyone. Partly for himself, but mostly for the innocent victims who could quite easily have been killed. It may not have been pre-planned, but it was entirely deliberate and I think he is probably on the lucky side with the length of sentence. Quotes from the judge and the report: “You struck people head on, knocked others onto the bonnet, crushed prams and forced others to scatter in terror,” the judge said. “You ploughed on at speed, violently knocking people aside or running over them, person after person after person.” "Some of those injured were left in tears as dashcam video from Doyle’s car showed him speeding towards terrified supporters while shouting “f**king pr*cks” and “f**king move”. "The defendant could be heard shouting “f**k’s sake move! Get out my f**king way!” before ploughing into screaming fans. A police officer described the noise as “sickening”."

But that is what happens in liberal democracies where sentencing is conducted by an impartial judge. Justice can be inconsistent - sometimes appearing to be too lenient and sometimes appearing to be too harsh.

He attempted to commit mass murder because he was mildly inconvenienced by a celebration he could have taken a route to avoid. He's getting away very lightly.

It appears his previous e.g. biting someone's ear off in a fight was also taken into account - and rightly so.

nothing regular about it though, massive levels of psychopathy to get into a mindset where the only person who matters is yourself. where your minor inconvenience is more important than the lives of hundreds of other fellow humans where your reaction to hitting a baby buggy and having people trapped under your car is to try and accelerate i think it's lenient and hope the years are enough to rehabilitate him [Post edited 16 Dec 17:12]

True. He sounds like he’s always quick to fly into a rage, so maybe it’s hardwired and rehabilitation may be a challenge. He sounds like a right head case to be frank.

This was a shocking and awful incident, and it is a miracle nobody was killed. I have no qualms about the sentence. However, he has to be sentenced for the crimes of which he has been convicted, and not crimes which some people suspect he may have committed. He was not charged with attempted murder, so the Judge of course was not proceeding on the basis that he attempted to commit murder of any of the individuals who were injured.

It's a difficult one. I think the vast majority of people in that situation, no matter how much of an impatient state/fit of rage they'd got into, would do no more than sound the horn, shout & try to edge forward. There's a natural instinct in us, and some animals too unless they're hunters after prey, to avoid hitting/injuring others by driving forward. Imagine the impact of a skull or arm on your window. 99.999% would stop in horror. Makes me wonder if there's a mh issue going on there - but I'd assume psychiatric reports had been done - anyone know for sure?

That just describes someone who is thick as mince. There's plenty of other thick people who haven't tried to use their car to kill hundreds of people. [Post edited 16 Dec 18:34]

It was a celebration that the person he was going to pick up was at. Footage before shows him running red lights, undertaking cars and gen driving like a madman. No idea what was going on in his head. He also drove down a closed road and got angry it had people in it. It's all very strange. Supposedly he was fairly normal in general.
