Anyone got tips/methods for successful de-stressing? 12:26 - Dec 28 with 754 viewsRyorry

Just thinking that I need to gets me stressed all over again! General thing, not particularly related to football.

Learned TM technique many decades ago (70s Ipswich in fact) but haven't applied it for about 30 years, has it been superceded by other/better methods?

Found leaning back against a big tree & breathing out as hard as poss every 20 secs or so helpful, but that obviously has its limitations (like 2C, precipitation ...).

Avoid watching the news, stop debating on social media, long walks in quiet nature, preferably near running water or the sea, meet up with old friends, join a gym and do some light training, book a holiday and spend time planning it.

I find walking helps.
Not related, but have you tried "box breathing"?
In for 6. Hold for 6. Out for 6. Pause for 6 and repeat.
Can take a bit of practice and you may find 4 easier to begin with, but may be helpful.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Already avoid news & do walks; friend meets planned; unfortunately gyms & hol aren't feasible, which just leaves sm avoidance - oh ...

These are for sleeping, really, but also help for relaxing generally...

Everyone is different but for me and occupying my brain other ways; walking, swimming, a long drive with a good friend to somewhere I’ve never visited before, Lego (one of the 2000+ piece plus for a real sense of achievement too), going to museum or gallery and learning something new, and less coffee, more water.

Good luck with it. There’s fun to be had in finding a solution.

Sadly, my old Italian Spinone, who was my greatest de-stresser, died just over 3 years ago.

I do have a young Labrador now, but he's mentally a tearaway teen & not into relaxing! Though playing footy & other games with him is huge fun, makes me laugh & does take my mind off things.

I’d also add that if you know the cause of your stress, then maybe book two or three with a therapist just to talk it out and get over that hump. It might unlock the cause of you’re not sure what it is too.

Losing my dad manifested itself as stress and I struggled to comprehend grief. Three sessions with a therapist and talking with someone (who was not a friend or relative) was a game changer.

That's really excellent, helped first time & I imagine more so with repetition. Gave an unexpected insight & made me laugh too - cheers! 👍

I often do a 15-20 minute 'reset'.

Set an alarm (optional. I usually do as I sometimes do this during break when working or between watching football games to give my eyes a break)

Put on some rain/nature sounds

Put on a good sleep mask to block out the light and close your eyes

Some of my favourites:

Obviously you can use anything. Prefer the sound of a log fire? Want to drift off to the sound of rain hitting an RV roof? Coffee shop jazz? Just other people talking? Some relaxing instrumental music? Whatever you fancy at that moment, Youtube will have it. Search ambience for ideas/discoveries. You can be anywhere from a luxury futuristic spaceship to the the Great Hall at Hogwarts.

Lost our cocker 2.5 years ago, not even 6. Been getting in a few holidays before hopefully getting another dog back end of next year

Ace thinking J2! Despite some amazing dreams lately, had failed to pick up from them the idea of deliberate mind travel.

Exercise and fresh air are important. Talking things through with a trusted friend can be helpful too. Make time for these things because they are important and it is too easy to spend time on things that really aren't so important when all is said and done.

Longer term, I found that helping someone out by taking their dog for a walk on a semi-regular basis was good for me.

I use them frequently as I work from home. I have a 10 inch tablet mounted above my laptop screen. Sometimes to feel a bit less closed in I watch one of the walking channels where they just mount a camera on themselves and you see what they see as they walk. Beach walks are a favourite in summer. The sound of the breeze and the sea. Snow walks in winter.

Other days some relaxing rain or music. There's something quite satisfying in winter putting a cafe scene on where it's hammering down with rain outside. Make yourself a coffee. Just chances the perception.

Love ones like this I would probably set an alarm with this even if i was working and not on break. I could see myself asleep within 5 mins!

Avoiding here for a couple of days has certainly helped! More seriously gentle exercise and mindfulness such as reading or watching something g familiar helps me. Also talking is more useful than anyone realises but feel this is more common sense these days.

I became interested in this about 20 years ago when I came across a series of podcasts on it.

It is known as Christian meditation and apparently has roots going back to the Desert Fathers.

It seems to have similarities to eastern meditation involving as it does a mantra.

The video tells you how to do it and includes a 20 minute session which begins and ends with a bell; you can always skip the prayer and hymn before.

I might add that I am not especially religious but liked the fact it was Christianity-based.

I attend a session one lunchtime at the church near Sadlers Wells, and at the end I don't think I've ever been more relaxed: the bell and the candles probably helped.

The idea is to do it for 20-30 minutes twice a day but my life at the time was too busy to incorporate it.

Here is a link to the UK and worldwide websites, and it appears that there are local or online groups.

https://wccm.org/ This has a meditation timer on the front page.

Finally, I personally find any "self-help" video or podcast with an American accent rather off-putting.
