Luke Littler. A phenomenon. 21:21 - Jan 3 with 1474 viewsITFC_Forever

An incredible start to his career, and as Mardle said a couple of years ago, if you’re thinking of going pro in darts, don’t bother as Luke will win everything for the next quarter of a century.

The Prize money is ridiculous. I'd take going out 3rd/4th round for £60k thank you.

Nothing against Littler, but if he does dominant for years and years, the sport will lose out because part of the excitement recently is there hasn't really been a really dominant player.

I think the only thing that could stop him is his health. He's 18 and he looks like he's primed for a heart attack

It feels like Humphries at his best is the only one who can live with him. And he's nowhere near his best at the moment.

I wish our recent spell in the Premiership was like Luke's darts prowess. Go one set down and win by three.

Yep.

Mitchell Lawrie, 15 years old, reached the WDF final a few weeks ago. Yeah, yeah, different standard and all that but still shows the talent that is out there.

There are darts academies up and down the country churning out 100+ average players in mid teens. The whole landscape of darts looks to be changing to a younger generation.

Rapidly becoming a game you need to take up early if you're truly serious.

Darts used to be a game you could take up in your late 20's or even older and still make a real name for yourself. Bobby George was 30 before he even chucked a dart for the Essex County team.

I guess 1m prize money for the winner is going to do that.

Beau Greaves beat him in the Youth World Final.

He was trying to be the first to hold the Youth World Championship and World Championship at the same time.

He doesn't win every tournament and is not as dominant (yet) as Phil Taylor was. Or Sampras was in tennis at his peak.

His biggest issue will be motivation. Will he want to put the work in to continue to be World Number One for ten or fifteen years? Tournament after Tournament after Tournament?

Both Tennis and Golf have their own Grand Slam of Majors. Career Slams, and then Calendar Year or concurrent Slams are motivators for great players to have something to aim for when they have been World Number One for a couple of years.

Whilst he doesn't win every tournament like you say, he has won an awful lot this year.

Over the longer formats he's pretty hard to beat for the current crop as he'll come good at some point.

He seems virtually unplayable in matchplay, is it the Grandslam of Darts where he has never actually lost a game?

I love darts but would never want to go to the world champs as it is full of pissed up kids trying to create a football like atmosphere paying at least £70 a ticket per session. Littler is right in what he said “boo me all you want, but you are paying my prize money“.

Crikey I remember back in the old north stand in the early 90s when it was £5 to get in and we would have a sing against our rivals in the pen next to us and have a right laugh. We played some well supported teams back then who bought good numbers down. Newcastle, Leicester, Sunderland, Derby we had such great fun in the north bouncing.

So what I'm trying to say is that standing needs to be brought back into football. Not that safe standing rubbish. Proper old terraces with crush barriers. Almost all stadia now has moved on to modern safe grounds(strangely not Hillsborough though and the tunnel I think is still there) and police/stewards seem to manage crowds very well. Hopefully someone has the sense to put forward a good case to bring it back.

Or just want to do something else with his life within the next five years.

I guess I am seeing the potential for a Ronnie O'Sullivan scenario. He had the talent to dominate for twenty plus years, but had a period during his potential peak when he could hardly be bothered. Littler is already talking about doing the equivalent of O'Sullivan's "I'll play left-handed because this is too easy, my opponent has hacked me off, and I'm bored", although he has said he is too mature to actually do it.

I dont think he will because he doesnt look to be looking after himself properly, he's 18 but looks like hes about to turn 30, he needs to look at Luke Humphries for what he needs to do to keep himself at the top for a long long time.

But hes still at the age where he can get away with it, the older he gets he won't, and the likes of Van Veen, or an unknown teenager about to turn pro will only get better
