I’ve been trying to think of a reasonable option upfront- 18:55 - Jan 4 with 5107 viewsLibero

who would fit our style of play, would be a potential step up if he moved to Ipswich, has experience in the Premier League (scored 10 in a very poor relegated side), is a good character and has proven he knows where the net is at every level he’s played-

Elijah Adebayo - Luton Town

I think he’s had some injury issues this season? But he’d be a great addition to the squad IMO and would help give some more proven firepower to our forward line, a similar level to Hirst, if not- potentially better!

If that’s the level of our scouting after 12 months of Prem money, I’d be seriously questioning where this club is heading.

Go on then, if you had to make a purchase right now for an out and out centre forward who fits our style of play and has good experience in both the premier league and championship, who would you be going for? - easy to throw shade from the sidelines, but I notice most of those who are don’t have the requisite answers 😂

I’ve said it time and time again, but if we’re going to get value for money we need to be doing a lot more scouting abroad. I’m amazed we haven’t looked at Germany or Holland more, personally.

No shade here, was just simply as a I put. Would be a concerning signing for me.

I think we're getting better though.

6 signings from abroad last window, think we will look there again.

Totally agree with you, but in the situation we’re in currently we need a proven goalscorer in English football IMO.

Who’s interesting you in Europe? I’ve a totally different list for that scenario!

I don't like any names of guys who will be available from this country. Will end up playing silly money for players who are simply not worth it.

Most of them aren't even close to being better than Hirst

Do you have a player in mind that’s potentially available, knows the championship well and has scored ten goals in a poor side in the premier league?

But what has he done recently Nathan Ellington springs to mind.

But what is a proven goalscorer?

I've made this point before

Szmodics - proven goalscorer at this level
Akpom- proven goalscorer at this level
Philogene- proven goalscorer at this level
Clarke (J) - proven goalscorer at this level
Hirst - proven goalscorer at this level

Many Town fans might disagree about Szmodics & Akpom at the moment, but if you're buying on players records on paper.. then those 2 amongst the best options available.

People talk about Piroe, Leeds purchased him as he was a proven goalscorer in this league. Leeds fans quickly started bemoaning his ability to score goals, however he has said it took him 5-6 months to actually settle and during that period he wasn't a regular scorer. Would he take another 6 months to settle here?

We have proven goalscorer but fans want somebody else. What fans are actually looking for is a player who will guarantee us 10+ goalscorer for the rest of the season. Guarantee goalscorer = Erling Haaland.

Moore joined us last time in this league in the Jan window, I will add many Town fans bemoaned that, but that experience player made a big difference. I can see us going for another similar experienced striker, who isn't going to let it worry him if he misses a couple of chances.

Either that or Dane Scarlett

Big mobile No.9’s with championship / prem experience with a decent goal tally to boot are like rocking horse poop

Liam Delap - loan - almost impossible
Josh Sargent - very unlikely due to then lot crying again
Marc Guiu - loan
Divin mubama - loan
Latte-Lath - bug permanent signing
Dion Beljo - wild card from abroad

That’s my guess for this window….

I think if you have Sargent on the list you also have to have Makama. Younger, stronger, not yet their star player, cash may allow them to keep Sargent, and he’s scored more. Crucially I think he fits our system better.

However, it may well be that they wouldn’t sell us anyone at any price.

I ended up watching him quite a bit after Xmas last year and he was dreadful and I really mean dreadful. He was lazy, couldn’t control or head a ball. He did start to look like a footballer before his injury but he’s been out a long time.

I personally wouldn’t go near him.

I saw a bit of him at that time too and only noticed him because he came across as a big unit, but a useless one.

Maybe he was out of form or unfit but it’d be a no from me. Surely we can do better?

I’m thinking we need a squad addition as frankly, no one that we’d target for the potential premier league squad will be available right now.

Adebayo is crap.

If we can't land someone permanently with the capability of stepping up then we need a Moore-esque signing on loan that can make an instant impact at this level, like Piroe.

Here's my list from a previous post.

1. Daniel Karlsbakk, plays in Norway, 22 year old, 6ft 4, 18 goals.
2. August Priske, plays in Sweden. 21 year old, 6ft 5, 18 goals.
3. Ibrahim Diabate, plays in Sweden, 25 year old, 6ft, 18 goals.
(These just finished their seasons so hopefully negotiations are more simple)
4. Kasper Høgh, 25 year old, 6ft, 17 goals. (Would he leave a champions league club?)
5. Jovan Milosevic, plays in Serbia on loan from Stuttgart, 20 year old, 6ft 3, 12 goals.

I like the idea of Karlsbakk and Egeli as our Norwegian duo, and he looks to have good pace, coupled with decent height and strength. Currently in the off season also, so surely easier to negotiate for a top scorer when they have two months to find a replacement. Would assume the fees and wages would be lower than trying to sign anyone from a fellow championship club.

Elijah Adebayo?

He scored 5 goals in the championship last season in a very poor side that were relegated and had multiple managers over the course of the season and 10 in the premier league the season before that…

When we signed Ellington he hadn’t scored more than 3 goals in open play for half a decade, hadn’t scored double figures in over a decade and had one season in the premier league in a good side who stayed up where he played over 30 games and only scored 5 goals- so yeah, not really comparable.

I wonder what made you think they were similar?

Seems like you’ve adequately defined what a proven goal scorer is…

Piroe is a number 10, I’m talking out-and-out centre forwards.

Couple of these are on my long European list- I just think for the run-in we need someone proven in UK footbal who knows what the championship is about!

No he isn't, he is a 9. That is where he has predominately played and scored shed loads of goals at this level - see below.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-piroe/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/369962

238 - CF
34 - as a 10.

Moore wasn't really a natural fit for us in 23/24 but we adjusted slightly and he was a big success.
