Stern warning would have done it.

Not as if he hurt anyone or sought / gained some advantage or profit from it.

I think the bigger question is what his motivation was. Strikes me as someone who needs help as much as anything.

Bearing in mind he has been faking since 2019 or before and it is an offence to imitate a officer, he is clearly a fantasist who needs help and taken cosplay to far. So yes he should be prosecuted.

If it had not made national headlines he probably would not have been. As it did it probably was in the public interest to do so.

Yes and why wasn't charged with carrying an offensive weapon?
He was carrying a f**king great sword, if I walked down the street with a f**king great sword hanging from the belt in my flairs I'm sure I would be quickly surrounded by armed police

It was likely a blunt replica. Still dangerous it you whack someone with it but not great at slashing or stabbing. They are not illegal.

No.

The legislation that was used was certainly not drafted with incidents such as this in mind.

Help, yes. Prosecution, probably not.

The two aren’t mutually inclusive and the huge backlog in serious criminal cases getting to court means they should take priority over populist nonsense such as this.

Add to that the fact that the £500 fine probably doesn't even touch the sides of the costs involved in prosecuting the matter.

What has the cost got to with anything? Using that logic where would you draw the line? A murder trial would be quite pricey and then you'd have to factor in the cost of locking the murderer up for x amount of years so if money was an important issue you wouldn't bother!

Obviously I'm using an extreme example but you get my point.

You dont think the cost is part of whether an action is in the public interest?

I could understand a close relative of one of the many fallen in a war thinking this might be a fitting tribute (though VERY misguided), but if the offender was not struggling mentally, was a repeat offender, and was not trying to honour a relative, then this is clearly unacceptable and should be punished accordingly.

Context is key, I think.

I think I’m with you on this Bigal. He’s clearly an inadequate saddo on who too much time and publicity should not have been wasted. To do that he’s clearly a sandwich short of a picnic.

By all means send some people round to his house and remove any fake military stuff, warn him and if a psychiatrist thinks he needs help, refer him but reserve costly actions for more serious stuff.

What does need to be understood is how he got there. I’ve been on Horseguards for Remembrance Sunday for a good number of years and security has gone through the roof in that time. How on earth he got to where he did is what needs addressing in my view.

I'm a weekend Mail reader, but I agree it should never have gone to court; the guy needs help, not a fine. Perhaps they should prosecute most of the royal family, as the majority wear uniforms and medals they haven't earned; ironically, Andrew did earn his medals!
