Doesn't do much for Reform's claim that they're different from the rest. I think Farage has probably taken the gamble on Zahawi because they badly need media surrogates who won't say anything too insane. He won't let Lee Anderson anywhere that isn't GB News and it's the same with Sarah Pochin since her rant about seeing too many black people on the TV adverts. At the moment it's up to Farage, Tice, Yusuf and Kruger to do all the heavy lifting for them, so I guess this helps them in that respect.

Yeah, funny how reform are needed to fight the broken system, and they are doing it by taking in the politicians who most embody that system from the tories. Anyone who honestly believes Reform are anti establishment is a fool.

if badenoch can continue to prop up the tories and tactical voting continues at the level seen in the last by-election it won't happen. enough people will vote for anything to keep them out.

As Chancellor, he was in charge of setting tax policy while simultaneously cheating his own. HRMC fined him over £1m. "There are no penalties for innocent errors in your tax affairs" - Jim Harra, chief executive of HMRC. As others have said, he'll fit in perfectly at Reform.

If Reform are to be taken seriously as a potential party of government (whether you like it or not) they need a few more heavyweights as they are something of a 1 man band. Zahawi, as an experienced former Minister, fits that bill and as an ethnic minority, will help present Reform as non-racist.

It's now been briefed by the tories that he defected after they wouldn't put him forward for a peerage. Shameless grifters just looking for the best way to feather their own nest.

Just about to post the same. Turns out that Nigel already had him accurately pegged.... ❤️🔥Tory sources confirm that Nadhim Zahawi made approaches to senior members of Kemi Badenoch's team about getting a peerage just weeks before defecting to Reform UK - but was turned down. — Pippa Crerar (@pippacrerar.bsky.social) 2026-01-12T14:35:15.652Z So, turns out Nigel Farage was correct all along, when he said “I thought Zahawi had principles. Tonight we learn he's just about climbing that greasy pole, as so many of them are”? — The Secret Lab⬛️r MP🥀🏴🇬🇧 (@secret-labour-mp.bsky.social) 2026-01-12T14:40:35.744Z

Given the pile on when Angela Rayner failed to properly pay her somewhat complicated stamp duty liability I am looking forward to Zahawi being constantly reminded of his tax irregularities AND his extremely aggressive legal attempts to prevent them being reported when he stands for election under the Reform banner. "taken seriously as a potential party of government" with him in their ranks, don't think so.

As they are an outsider & a currently small opposition party, they largely get a free pass on things like this. Rather like the Trump supporters in the USA ignore his many misdemeanours. Once you are in government, the scrutiny is much tighter.

You're probably right but Zahawi has the distinction of having served in one of the high office of state. Also he was vaccines minister in the pandemic which should be interesting given some of the views on that topic held by Reform-adjacent if not actual Reform-supporting people.

These days, most politicians seem to have few principles & constantly change their positions. The May local elections could be a big watershed moment for the Tory-Reform relationship if Reform have sweeping success.
