He basically a "No. 10" and given that Nunez looks to have that position tied down and is one of our best performers currently, I don't see the necessity. Just get that goal poacher that can come on for the last 30 mins when we need to win games or put them to bed, and leave it at that. |
We don’t need a goal poacher. McKenna’s striker has always had a lot of other attributes.

Surely if Philogene is out for a while we start with Clarke and bring on Szmodics in the 70th minute?

....in the top 10 of big chances missed in the Championship. As a team we have the highest xG "negative difference" and the 2nd highest total big chances missed in the league (behind Southampton). We need a natural goal scorer as an option when needed.

Agree with that. Although if we can get him in a cut price deal due to his contract situation, it could make a lot of sense. Got to be worth a similar number to Broadhead but Bristol City won’t be getting anything close to that this window.

I know I'm not the only one not convinced by Nunez as a number 10 and a couple of ex-players have said that area of the team is our biggest problem in general. I think we need more goals from there than Nunez is going to score and I would guess Kieran feels the same given Chappers' contribution from that area for most of his time at the club. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Tbf Nunez should have had a few more goals to his name, a few good saves here and there plus a few bad misses. That one from on the floor the other day would’ve been lovely had it gone in.

....and if we push him back to an "8" then I think that leaves us exposed in the middle given that we only play 2 in there. Dropping, or even rotating, Nunez would be a step backwards in my opinion.

We won’t play him in his natural position dont forget, so he will either be cover at left back or up front. [Post edited 19 Jan 19:46]

Nunez would work in a midfield three, stiiting just behind Matusiwa and Taylor/Cajuste imo. But that won't happen.

I'm not convinced he's an ideal option as a 10 and don't think he's done that well as an eight so far, although with limited opportunities there and most when the team was still finding its feet.

Sounded like a couple of weeks from the way Kieran talked about it on Saturday rather than anything more significant.
| Anis Mehmeti on 19:38 - Jan 19 with 1114 views | _CliveBaker_ | Very talented player and would add depth and options, not sure he necessarily meets the definition of 'better than what we've got' though. Probably as good as what we've got to be fair to him. | | | |

....you aren't too keen in general then? The general consensus from the people I speak to is that he's one of our better players, particularly over the last month or so. And I agree wholeheartedly.

Surely better in the 10 than Chuba..... and I'm worried if Nunez got a knock, we'd be too light. Cheapish, youngish....gets a body in. its a yes from me
| Anis Mehmeti on 19:46 - Jan 19 with 970 views | JammyDodgerrr | Guess it makes sense. A decent number 10, Szmodics is struggling to stay fit, Akpom out for a little bit, Nunez doing well but is not really a 10. Probably could get him at a decent price as out of contract at the end of the season. Could pay off quite well, for a not a lot of investment. | |

I don't think we need bodies though. IF we go up we're got an obligation on Akpom. We would then have Philogene, Clarke, Szmodics, Akpom, Nunez, Mehmeti, Egeli, McAteer all in contract and you could argue we would probably need to add 2 or 3 to that of premier league quality. Would certainly leave a lot of 'trading' to be done in the summer....again. We're not going to sign oven ready premier league players in this window and I'm not expecting us to, but with that in mind there must be an argument for keeping our powder dry and giving ourselves more room to manoeuvre in the summer. To my mind unless we believe a) we don't have enough to get us over the line or b) he's PL quality, then there's little value in it IMHO. [Post edited 19 Jan 19:49]

Not so far, although, as I say, he's not often played in his best role. I think there are pluses and minuses to him playing as a 10. The main minus is he leaves us short in the box, although he got forward more on Saturday. I still don't see him scoring enough goals, though. I think in some games, the Coventry home game for example, having an third central midfielder can have its benefits when ahead and looking to pick the opposition off on the counter-attack and his corners have had an impact (and his free-kicks obviously did against QPR).

It doesn't really matter where the goals come from if he's playing well and we're scoring though does it? We've scored 10 in his last 5 starts in the #10 and he's created or been heavily involved in a lot of our best work. We look a much better side with him in it IMO. We're the best team in the league over the last however many weeks, if it ain't broke... [Post edited 19 Jan 19:55]
