Are we actually looking for a striker? 20:11 - Jan 24 with 5920 viewsjoey_itfc

Phil, are we actually actively looking for a striker this window because apart from Wilson I can’t remember seeing any rumours.

Not expecting any names but SURELY we are looking for one? Especially after Hirst’s performance not just today but for the majority of this season.

I appreciate that, but the club has made it fairly clear through its actions that a No 9 has been on the shopping list for four windows now.

They have to start owning the rhetoric. There's been so much said about 'scary' target lists, and being ambitious in signings, but very little of that has come to fruition.

I'm not complaining about the summer's signings, but it's painfully evident that the club is writing cheques it cannot cash when it comes to getting a No 9 through the doors. It's becoming an irritatingly long list:

Fotis Ioannidis
Armando Broja
Reiss Nelson
Marc Guiu
Josh Sargent (allegedly - decent source)

(and I'm sure there are a few I've missed)

Why do people keep suggesting Sargent ffs? He’s told Norwich he wants to leave to go back to Canada to be closer to his family in the US.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

I'm not saying he's a target now.

I recall, after the Núñez signing, a reasonably reliable poster suggesting that we'd been on the verge of signing him AND Sargent, but that the latter had decided he didn't want to come.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I don't think the Akpom loan can be cancelled? Isn't there a obligation to buy if we're promoted?

Azon's been *really* good - which I know many won't agree with, but he's had a number of situations where but for a little bit of luck or different opinion, he'd have netted a number of goals!
I like his attitude, I like how he fits into our style of play - I honestly think if he gets a goal, he will go on a little scoring run.
He's a very good striker at this level IMO.

I am not sure of the exact clause situations regarding Akpom. It has been suggested this could relate to appearances/goals etc. The fee is £7 million, which given his form so far and now being injured is probably £6.5 million too much.
I was rather hoping we could send him back. Our procurement as far as No.9's is concerned has been pretty ropey of late.

Plenty of strikers available in Cambridge’, if you are looking for a bus driver.

Sounds just the " ticket " :)

Do we want the right player or do we want any player?

I'd rather the right player

Need the right player, we need them this window. That’s the job of the recruitment team, the jobs of Ashton and Werhun to get them deals over the line - failure to do that will be failure this window.

Genuine question out of curiosity, but who is running the recruitment these days? Unless I’ve missed it, don’t think we replaced Sam Williams after he returned to Man Utd.

Edit - Looks like it’s Mick Court. Interesting that they both previously worked at Man Utd.

If we are to be a club that gets to the Premier League and stays there why would you get a throw out from Leeds. Yeah, he's o.k. but no longer a Premier League player. He will do o.k. with the Blades when available. But he won't turn them into a Premier League club.
If we had got him in he would, based on the contract Utd gave him he would have wanted at least 18 months. So that would be the rest of this season and next,
I don't know the exact details of the Akpom situation. I know there is a£7 million fee involved. So do we really want the situation of a forward line with Hirst, Akpom , Bamford and Azon possibly in the Premier League ? We would end up, back in the Championship.

I didn't say I liked the link

But of course he scored against us, personally I think we can do better

Igor Jesus is another we tried to sign

We don't know others we missed out on, you have to ask the question or you never know

We sign a top striker or play offs. Simple as that really. Do you disagree? Not a criticism of you of course … but surely the club know Hirst and Azon aren’t good enough? Window after window we've failed on this front. Even last year we had Delap and tried and failed to sign others.

That's just not factual is it? Since the transfer window closed at the start of the season we've been as good as anyone - the points accrued in that time show we are capable with the strikers we have. We seem like we will sign at least 2 players (Mehmeti and maybe a midfielder) to improve the squad overall as well.

I'd love us to sign a forward but it has to be the right one and they don't grow on trees unfortunately. I'd rather no one than the wrong one.

Mick Court is an Ashton hire, not McKenna.

Knew him from Watford.

Another thing to wonder is how do we actually approach these targets.

I like to rotate my strikers, might suit some, may not suit those who enjoy their goal bonus's, look to start every week etc etc

Sometimes I like to just read what you’ve said, two or three times in a row and then sit in silence and drink it in.

Yeah, plans going dreadfully, isn’t it? We’re only in the top 3, we should have a 25 point gap at the top of the table - fuming.

Late to this thread - I think you're absolutely right about Azon. He's been unlucky not to score at least two or three more, his attitude and energy are first class, whether it's going well or not, he works and hassles and harries CBs and his touch and lay off is really good.

He's been noticeably improving - or rather developing into the way McKenna wants him to play - as the season has gone on and,. same as you, I expect him to go on a scoring run soon and not look back. I just hope we've got an option to buy him outright.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!
