When I hear the finer details of some truly heinous crimes I also struggle to oppose the death penalty. But I guess, that if principals matter to any person, then no matter how awful the crime, their opposition to the death penalty remains. If we all suspected it, how come the police arrested a completely different guy and had a whole murder trial against him, which fortunately the jury chucked out i guess.

When the evidence was circumstantial but highly circumstantial it was always dependent upon a confession for the families to have that certainty that the convicted prisoner was truly the one responsible, that there was no great deceiver still at large who had found a patsy. Now that that scenario can be discounted we can wonder about how confessions can be achieved sooner (without unreliable methods such as torture to accelerate them.)
So I suppose the fact that a confession has finally come is an argument against the death penalty, bizarre as it is that it has taken Wright so long to either come to terms with what he has done or to give up on gaming the legal system. There is now the dilemma of regarding him as an outright felon but a lesser one than Ian Brady who never seemed to be anything other than devilish in his keeping everything he knew a secret for his own perverted gratification, or to have an equal distaste for anyone who preys on the vulnerable. |  |

They did do a reconstruction at the time on Crimewatch. It’s the October 2000 episode, still watchable on YouTube. To think her friend heard her scream as the left to go different directions and she didn’t do or say anything. Must haunt her everyday.
As for Wright was in his pub one night and considering how evil he was he was totally anti drugs, someone was seen taking drugs and he almost tore his head off as he threw him out the door. Had one hell of a temper on him. | | | |

"Doherty’s description of her attacker’s car later led police to identify 56 vehicles, with Wright’s among them."
Her attack took place the day before the murder of Vicky Hall.
