| MATCH OFF on 11:23 - Feb 3 by Samuelowen88 | This is ridiculous. I know they want an early call, but they have 8 hrs to fix it? How many times can they postpone before we just get awarded +3 |
You can't build an indoor stadium in 8 hours! It's an outdoor sport played on grass The level of entitled whinging we're getting this season from Town followers over postponements is to use a word some of them use, embarrassing. Whinge when a game is abandoned, whinge when a game is called off "late", whinge when a game is called off "early". Whine whinge whinge. Pathetic entitlement

| MATCH OFF on 11:40 - Feb 3 with 1149 views | grow_our_own | Can anyone explain to me why a simple rain-cover can't prevent these waterlogged pitches? I don't get it. If I wear a waterproof jacket, I don't get wet. If heavy rain is forecast, and you know the susceptibility of your pitch, then you roll-out a cheap (few grand) rain cover, surely? What am I missing? | | | |

Sailors on HMS Victory were all about 5'1". I'm going to stick with the big lads on HMS Prince of Wales.

I’m bothered. That’s 2 days holiday I’ve already wasted on this fixture plus my expenses the first time around. We went to Fratton Park at 2pm on the Sunday on the first game and there was no hint of frost around the ground. Sun was out and the pitch at one end looked fine through the gap in the gates. Couldn’t see the whole pitch so maybe there were other areas more affected. But I think they called that off way too soon. Ipswich must be fuming. That’s 2 days of overnight stays, travelling etc wasted.

This is what I mean, Cricket manages to generally do quite well at clearing up after rain. Tbf I hadn't realised that it was due to rain all day there still. But, why covers can't be put on ahead of time does seem strange.

I don't think it's entitled to think a football match in the 8th highest ranked league in Europe shouldn't be abandoned. Certainly not twice in a month. Can we stop the overuse of this buzzword please. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| MATCH OFF on 11:34 - Feb 3 by Guthrum | Altho - and I've experienced this with building maintenance - the much heavier rain we've been getting in the last few years has been sufficient to overwhelm infrastructure which has been perfectly adequate since Victorian times. An impact of Climate Change, I'd guess. It's not the total rainfall over the year is greater, but it comes down in more intense storms, over-filling gutters and drains simply not designed to handle that unprecedented volume at once. |
If there is nowhere for the water to drain which given the amount of rain down here on the coast in Jan and now Feb has been a lot. There really isn't a lot that can be done.

Things that are embarrassing: The above post. Things that aren’t embarrassing: Being disappointed / frustrated that the only fixture we’ve had postponed all season has been postponed twice.

Being fair, it could be argued that Cricket pitches receive significantly less rainfall between April and August than football pitches receive between November and March.

My local national league team's away game in Hampshire was postponed for the third time on Monday. It happens, bad weather affecting football. It's nothing new.

| MATCH OFF on 11:59 - Feb 3 with 823 views | TresBonne | Well peed off about this as it's the second time I've tried to go, and took a days holiday for this one. Luckily hadn't set off just yet. Only saving grace is thank god the EFL and the clubs finally got their act together and announced a postponement early instead of waiting. I guess they knew the PR backlash would be insane this time if they had waited until say 3-5pm to see if conditions improved. | | | |

But someone at Pompey could have taken a look at the BBC weather update and noticed that heavy rain was predicted. And then, and I know this requires a massive stretch of the imagination, covered the pitch to prevent most of the rain falling on to it. It’s not entitlement to expect a Championship club to put on a fixture - freak weather happens but it didn’t happen during play, it was predicted to happen. Complete and utter incompetence on their part.

Nothing to do with entitled. Everything to do with lost income and holiday. I can’t afford to chuck money down the drain because a club in the second tier of English football won’t invest in their pitch.

| MATCH OFF on 12:03 - Feb 3 with 773 views | baxterbasics | Why not delay kickoff by 20 mins, issue every fan at the ground a waterpistol which they can go onto the pitch and fill using any standing water. Have a big water fight outside of the ground. et voila! Or sponges, that might work too. | |

Problem with that is it's a very big area to cover and you'd need some way of giving it a slope to run off (otherwise it would require pumping). Then you have to find somewhere for a very large volume of water to go. Overnight it seems to have been raining 2-4mm per hour in Portsmouth (from looking at weather charts, which isn't massively heavy). For a fairly average football pitch, that's something like 12 to 24 cubic metres (3,000 to 6,000 gallons) of water every hour. Not only do you have to get that down pipes, but find somewhere to dump it outside the ground (without flooding anyone else). A much larger cloudburst would multiply the issue significantly.

As the climate change conspiracists would have it, there's no longer "freak weather" just the new normal.

Is it at this level though? I can understand the abandonment at Blackburn - That was 'in game'. If They knew heavy rain was incoming as others have suggested they could have taken precautions by covering the pitch. Thousands are spent on players then covers should surely have been deployed. I am sure Ipswich used to have a tent style cover to allow the pitch to 'breath'. The drain off areas would need good drainage I suppose and maybe Portsmouth don't have that. Overall if we play it in March it is one less game in this difficult away run to negotiate. Maybe we have Jaden and Nuno back as well, Dan Neil integrated as well. Take the Positives. Although I get the frustration of those already travelling / taken time off etc. I've been in that situation on a few occasions.
