We are very different to burnley imo

| Middlesbrough awesome on 23:29 - Feb 9 by FrimleyBlue | They play how we did when we went up They are not prepared for the prem This season we are purposely slower for a reason and alot of our play is in preparation for when we get back to the prem. Let's not forget the 50 odd clear cut chances weve missed. We maybe third. We maybe slower visually but we are almost an incredibly solid side. |
Spot on Frimmers. That's the under the bonnet work that KMc has been doing, because he knows exactly what we need for a sustained stay in the PL. We live in a short-term-focussed world though and it's not at all surprising that some fans want constant gung-ho football, a number nine who scores twenty goals a season because he's a number nine, and to just blow the Championship away because we've got all the parachute money. Thankfully, for Ipswich Town Football Club, we have a manager and management structure who see way beyond all of that and who (hopefully) cope well with any ridiculous, self-destructive flak they get from the 'everything now' brigade, as they build us up into a proper long-term prospect. It's really exciting when you take a step back and look at how far we've already come. The progress might not be so visible this season, but it's proper, robust construction for the future. I think that more and more people are realising that though, looking on the (very) bright side.

Yeah, I tend to not base my entire opinion on one game of football. You should try it sometime.

The usual suspects had nothing to moan about at the weekend because we won so now they're desperately trying to find ways to be negative on the basis Boro had a good result and are in decent form. Absolute bunch of melts.

| Middlesbrough awesome on 07:44 - Feb 10 by Dubtractor | Only Coventry have had more shots per game than us this season. Only Coventry have a higher Xg than us. Only Coventry have scored more than us. We are, by pretty much any metric you want to use, an attacking team. But apparently it's the wrong kind of attacking football...... Another stat for those frustrated by our 'slow' play. Middlesbrough have higher % possession than us to create fewer chances and goals. |
Much like their reaction to a defeat, or McAteer putting in a good or bad performance, or Walton, or any player really... these people take a sample size of one (in this case Middlesborough's performance last night) and immediately make that the 100% norm. And in many cases pit that against the very worst of ITFC in order to prove it to themselves. How many times have these people actually watched Middlesborough? Or any other team in fact? Call me old fashioned, but I'm watching Ipswich every time they (and most other Championship teams) are playing.

A variety of things we're 3rd for possession won in the final third, they were 9th 4th for touches in opponents box, they were 9th we are third for shots on target, they were 9th we are third for xg they were 10th we are 2nd for big chances, they were 4th we are top with 57 clear cut chances missed, they were 13th YET We are top of xg conceded To be in the top slots for many attacking stats, but also top for xg conceded.. that's an incredibly solid championship side. Compared with Burnley who being very solid defensively, but they didnt combine that up the pitch. It worked to get them promoted. 30 cleansheets etc, so you can't begrudge the job it did.... but that was never gonna work in the prem. For example Burnley are 19th for chances created. Bottom for shots on target.

It’s the criteria to keep fans on side. If we don’t go up this season and we play this type of football next season, and most of us have already realised it’s going to be a much tougher league next season, then fans will lose interest We all remember how people got fed up with Big Micks style of play, then Ashton may as well kiss good bye to his fancy new shiny stand because it won’t be needed. People soon get bored nowadays and move on if it’s not holding their interest. Its the society we live in. I’ve watched Town for over 50 years now,so I get it. But I can also already judge the restlessness in the ground. People want entertaining and they feel they aren’t being. Have to admit Boro are everything I hoped we would be this season but aren’t.

| Middlesbrough awesome on 22:33 - Feb 9 by _CliveBaker_ | Got to give Boro credit where it’s due, they’re a good team to watch and as you say have done it without particularly deep pockets. They’re top of a league that has 4 teams with parachute money, Wrexham with Hollywood money and Birmingham who have spent a few bob. Good on them, and seeing their fans in the away end tonight reminded me a little bit of where we were 2 years ago as we defied the odds and played exciting football on the front for. They’ve had a fair few years of mediocrity and can’t be fun for them seeing Newcastle & Sunderland doing well. Begrudgingly pleased for them tbh, I’d happily go up with Boro. |
They deserve a lot of credit for sure. They do have a PL quality play maker in the middle of the pitch though which makes a hell of a difference. Hopefully for them Hackney doesn't miss games between now and the end of the season. If we managed to get him in the summer we would be p!ssing it this season.

Insane post. Anyone who thinks we are boring to watch clearly didn't actually sit through the dark days or can't have been paying much attention. Who are these people who feel they aren't being entertained? Were they watching us get beaten by Northampton on ifollow during COVID or have they just turned up because we're trendy again? Football is not a video game.

Not insane at all. Plenty of mumbling in the ground. People on here have even mentioned it a few times. Which dark days are we talking’s about then ? The Duncan Era ? The end of Burley era ? The Evan’s era ? Because I was there for all of them, and whilst we are nowhere near that now, Im saying that people want to be entertained. It’s boring. Tapping it backwards and forwards and going nowhere in particular. Plenty in the ground feel it. You hear them moaning most weeks.

They do but he's also been there since he was 11, so good on them. They've bought well as well, Malanda looks a good player as are Morris and McGree, all 3 picked up from MLS. I think McGree is one of the best in the league tbh when he's fit. Seem to be getting a tune from players like Browne & Conway, added some good experience in Bamford, Targett and man bun whose name escapes me from Leeds. And they've backed a young manager who has an impressive record albeit largely in lower quality leagues. Good luck to them, if it wasn't us they were ahead of I would be rooting for them. Personally I hope they beat Cov and we overtake them for top 2. I think they look a bit average and while they've got themselves in a great position there's a lot of games left and they're nowhere near the finish line yet.

I won't disagree that people grumble, but it just illustrates that an increasing % of the population are entitled idiots. Only 6 teams in the top 4 divisions have scored more goals than us. The stat has been repeatedly shared that we've created the most big chances in the Championship People want the moon on a stick and whine when they don't get it.

Definitely not knocking them at all. They've done incredibly well and their recruitment has been very good. Hackney is the one that takes them from a play off chasing team to a top 2 contender though for me. If he missed half a dozen games I think it would kill them.

You are 100% correct. It’s what I’m trying to say, people won’t stick around for long if the footie is no good. Even more so nowadays. I remember the 8000 odd in the ground at the end of the Burley era(I was one of them that day). A lot of the fans have jumped on the band wagon,we know that and they will be gone again if we don’t get promoted either this season or next. I really think it has to be this season, next is going to be really tough. People need to be entertained in today’s climate or it doesn’t hold their interest Im afraid. There are a couple of guys in front of me who have already stated they won’t be back because the football we play isn’t great and the woman and her son next to me said they aren’t coming again because a)they can’t afford it and b)”we don’t play like we used to” her words not mine.
