He’s not a troll but rather a narrow minded old man who finds the modern world very scary and harks back to supposedly happier times. Union flag bunting, lashings of ginger beer, no pesky dark people - that kind of thing.

I suppose, one day we will all think back with extreme fondness to our youth and dislike the here-and-now.

But don’t forget, for all of his subtle and non-subtle xenophobia and racism, many posters asked for him to come back.

While this is true, and I look back fondly on my youth, we don't all blame foreign people for the negative changes we all see. He never engages with posters who try to educate him, and that makes him a troll at best, a bitter xenophobe/racist at worst.

Benters, at some point you need to stop and ask yourself why you believe so much stuff that is demonstrably false. Then ask yourself, who does it benefit for you to believe these untruths? Why do they keep telling you these untruths? What might they be trying to stop you thinking about by filling your brain with these untruths?

Of course I expect you won't do any of that and will carry on believing they give British passports to anyone when I've just provided you with black and white evidence that this isn't the case. But it'd be lovely if just once you paused to think about why you're so ready to believe lies and why you want to hold on them even though they are lies, and then to start questioning why certain people (*cough* Farage) keep feeding you lies and imploring you to believe them.

I know it probably makes me a bad person but I am enjoying the BBC bigging up some of our Winter Olympics athletes as practically nailed on for a medal only for them to not quite make it to the podium.

Just let them do their thing and see how it goes. Celebrate their achievements if and when they happen.


Yes, there seem to be an awful lot of 'sure thing' competitors who don't end up troubling the top of the leaderboard.

I imagine it's tactical/political. Given all the reliance on lottery funding, and all that goes with it (i.e. If you win a medal you MUST thank the lottery in your interview), it wouldn't surprise me if half of the 'bigging-up' is with half an eye on maintaining funding.

If the BBC suggested someone was just happy to be there, I imagine funding would disappear like a fart in the wind.
