It's one of those sports that's so difficult that even people who are world class at it look kind of shit. It's incredibly scrappy and bitty, pure chaos.
Definitely difficult to follow. Saw a live match at Coventry a few years ago, loved it but couldn't follow the puck and didn't know the rules, etc. Thought it would be easier on TV as the cameras follow the puck, but no, it's just too small and the game so quick!
I’ve been watching it live once or twice a month for the past season, as my eldest boy got into it.
We watch it on the tv too if the nhl times zones allow.
It’s impossible to watch like you do football, took me a few games to get used to. Once you get used to it, it becomes much easier a bit like say badminton, where sound and racquet are later than the movement of the shuttlecock.
In the 1990s, Fox pioneered 'FoxTrax', which helped viewers to track the puck when watching on TV:
Canada have several superstars in their squad, but USA have the Tkachuk brothers who play the game so hard. I have a sneaky suspicion USA will shock them to gold medal this time. I don't think Canada will like the constant hits from USA.
Hockey is far easier to track in person (assuming you're not sat in the heavens).
It also suffers if the TV Feed isn't in HD. Puck is just very small and stupid fast. That said you learn to get your eye in eventually. One tip I always recommend to people watching for the first time (TV or real life) is when you lose track of the puck, just find where everyone is looking. You can read a lot of the game purely based on body positioning of the players.
I have lived in Canada for 50 years, and have regularly watched televised (ice) hockey. Gone to many live pro games, too. And my three grandsons play and I try not to miss a game. After football, the ‘soccer’ kind of course, hockey is definitely the next best spectator team sport in the world, live or televised. You just get used to following the puck, the shots, the saves, the passing, the frenetic player movement, and of course the checks and the penalties. And you cheer fanatically for Canada to beat the Yanks.
Qu'est-ce que vous chantez? Nous chantons "Les Bleus, allez!"

Sounds good to me!
My Uncle lives in Manitoba, but sadly supports West Ham
I’ve always struggled to follow and enjoy the game but have always oddly followed the results..have been really enjoying a Canadian guy on YouTube shorts and really hope they pull it off. I think having the NHL players there this time round has added a huge amount of interest in the America’s as they normally don’t bother following as religiously the world championship for example because it falls in playoffs period ergo no NHL players.
