I had a good look at him yesterday as I wanted to see if he matched up to the hype he's been getting recently.

He absolutely does. His movement was excellent. He plays mainly within the width of the penalty area, has an excellent first touch and looks strong. Great first touch and brings others into play with both feet, and obviously hit that exocet missile of a free kick at the end. He scored with a similar shot the other week.

His movement in the box was fantastic and I would imagine he is a nightmare to mark.

What surprised me the most though, was his willingness to press. He looks (a little) heavy maybe, so I was surprised to see him putting in that intensity of work.

I also didn't realise he's only 23. Certainly one I would imagine the club has been taking a long look at.

I was surprised there was no reported interest in him from us. He certainly made a difference to them when he came on. The big question is whether he is actually better than what we have or whether it's just that him on form (as he clearly is) looks better than our front players when they are off form. I guess that is down to the recruitment team/McKenna to asses over a lot longer than 30 minutes.

There is also the personality issue to take into account. The club have been very careful with recruitment, making sure to get the right characters in the door. It seems like we've had one high profile failure there recently, but overall that seems to have worked out. It's not the same squad as two years ago, but even on today's Town in Five, they all come across as very likeable chaps.

I know nothing about him, but it will definitely be a factor they consider.

He'll be our second choice striker next season.

It’s one of those that you think how did Swansea find him? His previous record doesn’t scream prospect, on the face of it looks a bit of a punt. He looked decent, but will he turn out to be one of those players that just has one outstanding season (sorry Akpom)!

I noticed O'Shea and someone else (can't remember who) having a notably friendly chat with him straight after the whistle. Instinct told me it was more than just a "well played mate" type chat, but I'm neither a lip reader nor a batty.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Town were comfortable even at that stage of the game, you have to be careful judging players in that situation. Town players just turning the cogs, yes he ran around a lot but he wasn't under the pressure to really judge him. You can also argue he didn't score whereas our sub striker brilliant movement resulted in him scoring and only a worldy GK save stopped him getting two.

Delap is overrated. Battering ram, athlete, excellent dribbler, and fierce long-range shot. But hardly any football brain, failed to act as fulcrum, selfish, poor passer, and poor heading technique for big man. He's got a lot of developing to do before he's anywhere near the same league as Harry Kane. Probably never will be. We completely lost our identity when Delap played. We became a group of players that gave it to Liam and crossed our fingers, because we knew he wouldn't give it back. He'd either lose possession or get an attempt on goal almost every time he got the ball, and much more often the former. We ceased to be a team. Unlikely he'll have developed much this season sitting on Chelsea's bench.

Delap put us on his back so many times last season, I dread to think what the outcome would have been without him.

The Swansea fans were saying that most of the time he is lazy and stands immobile most of the time....thats why he was on the bench against us. Find it bizzare myself to say that about this leagues leading scorer.

He is a good player, certainly got an eye for goal. He doesn't blow me away though. If we go up I'm sure he is someone we will get linked with given our love for buying Championship players but he wouldn't be for me.

Utter rubbish and a boring narrative that some try to push.

Delap was superb last season, he had virtually no support from midfield to do the things you're saying.

He was a mixed bag delap

Up until the chelsea game he was a powerhouse for us which came with a mixed bag of performances, Some excellent individual games, some, where he became the cause of us conceding counters and goals ( one i remember vividly where Davis was 2 yards away from him but rather than play a simple pass, he lost it, opponents attacked and scored.
But there were games too he won the point/s for us with solo magic.

Most fouls in the league i think it was last season, which he seems to be doing the same for chelsea, he just seems intent on being a nuisance rather than being a beloved forward known for his teamwork and goal scoring attributes, it's all boom boom boom with him.

I don't feel we saw even 50% of the delap we had prior to christmas once we actually played that chelsea game though, he was never the same player for us after that game imo.

But someone needs to develop him, or he's at risk of going backwards.

Agreed, feel that for the second half of the season he had mentally checked out and was already out of the club. Became way more selfish and cut an increasingly frustrating figure. Not 100% sure a return to a promoted Town next season would be good for anyone - we were a stepping stone and I doubt he would want to step back to us...sadly

Silly thing was i thought after christmas we might as a team have got better, but it got worse really, when you think back we had a host of 'selfish' players all across our front line, ( Saying selfish not a slight on the players themselves by the types they were)

Philogene/Clarke/Omari/Delap/Enciso

Not exactly a pass pass pass side lol

I could see quality there, but I thought he looked a bit half-assed. But maybe he thought the game was gone and was not happy at being rested for the first half. Fantastic shot on him, really deserved to hit the net, which looking at his physique is not a surprise. Without knocking Azon and Hirst, I would say he is a definite upgrade. Has a bit of similarity to Mitrovic, the ex-Fulham 9 to him.

Yes I noticed that too. Obviously standard nowadays but seems fairly obvious that he'd have been one we had a good look at so wonder if it was more than that but didn't happen in January for whatever reason.

I think by the time the next transfer window opens, hopefully we'll have gone up to the Premier League again, and however well he's done this season, would he just be another one of the type of signings we made last time - a very good Championship level striker? We bought the likes of Szmodics, Jack Clarke etc as some of the best Championship players from that season.

I would like to think that we would have learned a) from last time, that isn't necessarily the best approach if the aim is to stay in the PL - and b) take a leaf out of Sunderland's book for example, and look to sign players that would be more likely to be Premier League ready?

I think we were well behind the 8 ball in terms of being prepared for the premier league and that showed in our recruitment. We've done more shopping from overseas on coming down than we did when going up and I'd expect that to continue.

There's a balance to be had IMO. I was never keen on the idea of spending £20m on Szmodics and Ogbene at the time, and they're the sort of deals we need to move away from. Philogene was always going to be a good signing at the right age and with a much higher ceiling (appreciate he wasn't signed from the Champ, but we tried to before he went to Villa). Similarly Hackney would still be a fantastic signing if we went up.

Bit extreme this. We're also not looking for someone in the same league as Harry Kane, who is a top 3 striker in the world.
