| Just a minor point from last night. 09:43 - Mar 4 with 2153 views | MattinLondon | Admittedly I might well be misremembering but the Hull keeper was yellow carded for time wasting so how come the ref didn’t award a corner? I thought that was the case now? | | | | |

Timed the Hull keeper with the ball in hand for 12 seconds at one point last night - ref needs a lesson in how long a second actually is!

As with most new rules, they gave up on it after the first two months.

Boro keeper got penalised for holding the ball too long on Monday against Brum, corner given. So it's not been given up on by all refs, but I agree it needs to be applied a lot more

Once the hand count down starts then the ref has committed to it - I think there's a little leeway if the goalkeeper has begun the motion of kicking it but the ball hasn't quite been released in time. I think overall it's had the desired effect and only needs the occasional corner to remind GKs of the risk.

I was doing the same. He was holding it for longer than allowed more often than not.

Exactly. Refs only need to do it a few times, teams will see that it is being taken seriously, and won't do it again, after getting their first yellow. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Just an idea. Refs generally have plenty going on and probably enjoy the breather a goal kick provides. If they want to actively prosecute the 8 second rule (and it is supposed to be being extended to possibly goal kicks and throws), why not delegate it to the assistant refs (linos) to adjudicate it as they are adjacent to the keeper anyway and have less to concentrate on.

Long been an advocate of a time clock in football running only when the ball is in play - can be 60 or 65 minutes. Would stop all the time wasting in a heart beat The way the game is going I suspect this will come into effect sooner rather than later

Ive noticed the refs really slow down the counting too when it gets near the end of the count just to almost be like look im doing this obviously but i dont want to have to card you for it, there's no way its being consistently counted like you'd think it should.

Irony at its finest. I know it gets discussed to death but time wasting really does need sorting. It is a huge stain on the game and paying supporters. At professional levels of football, I don't understand why they dont give more power to the 4th official to deal with those issues (Stop watch etc). All they do currently is chuck a board up every now and then and listen to abuse from managers.

Some of it is to slow the game down and stop any impetus that might have been built up so I don't think it would stop it completely but I agree it would improve things. Have a separate timekeeper responsible who stops the clock whenever the play stops or the ball is out of play. In fact, give it to the VAR crew and take away all their other power/responsibilities apart from to let the ref know if they have made an absolute howler that is so obvious it doesn't need a replay to see (then let the ref go straight to watch a full-speed replay from one angle and decide without any commentary from the VAR lot - if it is a howler it won't need them to tell him why)!
