I see Trump is now demanding the "unconditional surrender" of Iran 16:06 - Mar 6 with 3966 viewsRadlett_blue

Nothing else will do.
They then need to find a leader acceptable to Trump (and, presumably to the Iranians) and he will then "work to make Iran great again".
Breathtaking, even for Trump.

"presumably to the Iranians"

What makes you think that?

I suspect that's fairly near the bottom of Trumps list of priorities.

90 million Iranians also want to see the unconditional surrender of this barbaric murderous regime. Who the next leader is will be up to them. Not Trump.

It will be hard enough for anyone to rule Iran in the future, but even harder if they don't have the support of at least some of the Iranian people.

It's democracy, Jim, but not as we know it.

Then again, when it comes to Venezuela and Iran, Trump is doing in plain sight what past presidents have done more surreptitiously in installing, supporting and propping up regimes that are far from democratic. Indeed, Iran itself is a case in point.

Who would be in a position to speak with sufficient authority to unconditionally surrender. He is creating a power vacuum and no way of peacefully filling it.

It isn’t just a military solution needed but a political one. How on earth do you police the country and oversee a peaceful election. The population of Iran is equal to the combined population of California, Texas & Florida spread over a land area as large as Alaska.

To underline the stupidity of the situation Trump is now saying thry are totally demolishing Iran and are ahead of schedule.

Absolutely nailed on that we'll see Iran bombed to rubble over the coming months, tens of thousands of civilians killed, and no exit strategy remotely thought through.

This weekend is likely to see the biggest bombing campaign seen so far too.

“Total annihilation” is what Hegseth said.

Tehran could easily be the next Gaza in terms of destruction.

I said that is what should happen.

What would you like to see as a future for the 90 million Iranian people? A peaceful future where they live in a democratic country or another 40+ years under a brutal Islamic theocracy which regularly murders tens of thousands of their own people simply for protesting in favour of democracy, hangs members of their LBQ community from cranes, murder women simply for showing their hair and spending a large proportion of their GDP on funding their terrorist proxies to carry out atrocities in the Middle East and around the world, including this country?

To make matters worse it seems Netanyahu has managed to convince Trump it would be a good idea to encourage minorities to take up arms. They don’t want a peaceful settlement they want to weaken Iran as much as possible.

Only around 60% of Iranians are Fars (Persian)

There are suggestions that the US are planning to use the Kurds to open up an attack.

Leaving aside the fact that (if successful) it could lead to the break-up of Iran, if I were a Kurd I wouldn't trust the US one bit, given the way they used and supported the Kurds in Syria in recent years in the fight against ISIS and in recent months have betrayed them now they have a new best friend in charge of Syria.

GB is not naive, he's just doing what he does: peddling the official narrative to the uninformed and ignorant.

Our allies in the Middle-East are vile regimes, run by pseudo-pious, sick individuals who give their nations' riches in exchange for so called "protection". Most significantly, they are hugely unpopular with their peoples.

As authoritarian as they may have been, the recent leaders of Libya, Venezuela and Syria secured better lifestyles for their citizens than the head-hopping, prostitute leaders of our royal family's hideous friends in the Middle East.

If you sit on a country with huge natural resources, you buy your survival by selling it cheaply to a great military power. Human rights, morality, religion and being against "sponsors of terror" are mere sideshows to be periodically plucked and woven into a narrative to justify illegal wars for resource theft whenever required.

In his mind, Trump will be looking to shift responsibilty onto the people he has either provoked/left picking up the mess he's unleashed (see ICE murders in his own cities for a smaller scale comparison)

He will see it as plausible deniability presumably. What's worrying is that it seems to be Netanyahu and the extreme wings of Israeli politics which call the shots, rather than Trump being top of the tree.

Once again, there's no easy answer to the Middle East being volatile and at risk. I did feel Starmer's approach to Trump was broadly correct though as he seems to be thinking beyond next week.

All these influencers and prominent people who’ve moved to the UAE: I hadn’t realised they were being paid by the authorities to pump out propaganda. The coordinated response to the attacks from Iran, all praising the country’s regime using exactly the same language and promo footage of the crown prince is quite something.

A fine example of America First, sod the rest of the world.

Not sure if any offensive, rather than defensive , missions are being flown from US bases in the gulf states. Going to be interesting if they start leaning towards Starmer’s stance.

No chance however of Trump realising he has been conned by Netanyahu. See Arab States are beginning to ask where the “peace” money has gone.

Maybe people posting in this thread, not specifically aimed at you, should listen to what the Iranian diaspora are saying about the current situation.

This sums up the debate perfectly.
