Anyone else concerned that Southampton are putting themselves in the mix 16:57 - Mar 21 with 5697 viewsGlasgowBlue

for 2nd? Six points behind us (albeit we have a game in hand), still to play us and in an amazing run of form.

No. As far as form is concerned, three points behind and a home game to come? They are well and truly in this. They are winning easily without any pressure and if they finish second, they’ll deserve it. No excuses, the table doesn’t lie.

Tonight? So disappointing. It is what it is.

More concerned about whether we're going to get what we need.

We need 11, possibly 10 providing we can keep their goal difference at arms length, regardless of what they or anyone else do. But we won't get that if we continue playing like this.

I remember someone saying they hoped they beat Wrexham the other week for some reason or another, which was ludicrous. They’ve been on a tear the entire calendar year (well since Feb).

Our goal difference was a big factor until tonight. At 8pm we were +11 ahead of Southampton. In just 90 minutes that has been cut down to +6. So 84 points may not be enough for us now.

Correct, I don’t think we are getting 10 points from these games if I’m being totally honest. 7 or 9, so will depend on others is my hunch.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

We 'only' need 10 points. 10 points means Boro and Southampton can't catch us. In theory Millwall could draw level, but there is no chance in hell they could get a GD swing of 20+

2PPG with our schedule is going to be very hard. I don’t see it but I’m not worried about a couple of the others getting max points either. If Southampton put themselves in a position to overtake us on that second from last game then yes, I’ll be very worried.

Oh I agree, it's very tough. It was more that the marker of 'needing 11' just wasn't true in the context of Millwall's GD.

Personally, if we avoid losing to Southampton and Boro, I think we'll get over the line. Just frustrating that tonight we could have laid down a tough gauntlet and have instead left an opening and some doubt.

I thought win tonight and that was basically it because 7 from 5 looked very doable and tonight was our easiest game in terms of going to a place where the home side had 1 win in 7 and barely score. Really really bad night for us.

Beat Boro I think we do it, draw I think it’s a coin toss, lose and I think we will be in trouble. So yeah, kind of a big game now.

The way us Boro and Millwall are playing Saints will likely be up with a game to spare.

I don't know where they found that manager (think he's only 33?) but since he changed to a back 4 they have been unstoppable.

Lose and Southampton win and I'll start to prepare for the play offs at best. Time for clicking/gelling is up, think today is huge in terms of squad confidence.

I hardly think saying "play offs at best" was a mystic revelation to crow about.

Without doubt, they are a real threat and let’s be fair playing far better than us. They are blowing teams away, we are grinding out results without looking convincing. Although things are in our own hands, I’m not confident we can take care of our own business to get the job done.

But it is true. Unless my maths is completely up the shoot, Millwall can get 85 points tops now. If we get 11 points we're on 86. With Millwall unlikely to make up the GD on us the actually we 'only' need 10. Not easy of course, especially if we turn out complete non-performances like last night, but also not a daunting target. 3 wins and a draw, even if Millwall, Middlesbrough and Southampton win all their games.

My point wasn't that 10 or 11 points is easy, but that we are fortunate that what we have in front of us a very definite and unextraordinary target that is completely in our hands, but regardless of what Southampton do I am worried that we'll blow it by playing like we did last night.

Saints will finish second, they are absolutely flying, I don't trust us to get a result at the Hawthorns, at best a draw at St Mary's and not overly confident for Boro.

Saints have Swansea, Bristol City and Preston, can't see them losing any of those.

I still believe we will do it. But we may have to beat Southampton on their own ground which won't be easy. There has to be a freak result where somethampton absolutely dominate a team but without scoring then concede one in stoppage time.

No chance we beat Saints, unless they get 8 injuries against City.

Agreed. We've made it harder for ourselves, but a big performance Saturday and we're back to the other teams having to be perfect. We have to work on the proviso that Saints will get all points available to them apart from against us and work back from that.
