Kieran McKenna - an apology 12:00 - Apr 12 with 1779 viewsnrb1985

Yesterday, as some of you may have noticed (40+ downies and counting!), I had a real heads-gone moment and called KM an idiot. I’d like to apologise — even allowing for derby-day passion, it was stupid.

I just felt that bringing Nunez on was such an unnecessary risk, considering their crowd was flat and the game was petering out into a non-event. We were in complete control. And while KM, nor anyone else, could have truly foreseen how badly it could have gone, there was more than an outside chance it was going to descend into a circus — which it duly did.

No harm done in the end but on another day we could easily have ended up with nine men for the latter stages. Nunez should obviously have gone and Leif too for tossing the ball away. I think we can all agree we wouldn’t have been quite so sanguine had things played out like that.

But they didn’t and for 60-odd minutes it was the perfect away performance, akin to Cov, masterminded by the best coach we’ve had in my lifetime. So to KM and everyone else — apologies again.

Roll on Tuesday. COYFB.

P.S. The defence and GK will rightly get the plaudits but special mention for George Hirst. Thought that was his best performance of the season — exactly when we needed him.

Good for you for a full apology, not something that many people do these days.

As it is, I wasn't sure exactly the point you were making because I didn't know what happened at the precise time you posted but I assumed it related to Nunez.

Fair play to you but people here must realise people post things in the heat of the movement and get over it sometimes.

FWIW - you will rarely find any posts I've made during a game or that are particularly reactionary at all.

The point was, and there's a thread I started exactly on this subject in the week, you could see what was coming a mile off.

And I felt, if I could see it (a bloke who knows nothing and posting on a msg board), and others, how did KM think it was the right decision?

Granted, I couldn't have masterminded an away perf like that either so swings and roundabouts I suppose!

In life, if you balls up always best to put your hands up and own it.

Further, I would like to add, DJR - "I'm sorry if you were offended" ;)

As people in the match day chat were concerned about Nunez's temperament, purely for yesterday, before he came on it could be argued McKenna should have also had that in mind. Saying that, I didn't even consider it before it was mentioned!

But all's well that end's well.

Yes, agreed.

I thought it was a bad decision to even send him out to warm up once we'd scored.

All's well and that end's well indeed and about time we had some luck. I guess the PGMOL were right after all - things do even themselves out in the end.

Obviously different in hindsight but it was absolutely the correct sub at the time. We needed someone who’s able to regain possession on the ball. Didn’t quite work out but hey hi.

Mehmeti is not a 10.

Not sure I would agree.

We had been superb up until that point against arguably the second best team in the division - with Mehmeti in the 10.

There was only one winner at the time of the sub and we looked like we’d score again on the break.

We were in complete and utter control.

I did think it was an unusually OTT post from you, fair play to you for recognising that and apologising. Most just double down on the hyperbole so it's very refreshing to see someone owning it.

I think the fact it turned into a circus was what made the sub so brilliant. They completely lost focussed at that point.

I thought we were superb out of possession yesterday. Mehmeti included.

I don't think he offers much in that role in possession though and his best game this season was vs Swansea where he played in his natural LW and he was absolutely superb.

TWTD has always amplified any 'in the moment' rants to the max due to the lack of a match thread compared with other forums.

If posted on those, it gets lost on page 10 within 20 minutes.

Ironically I think Mehmeti was subbed because he was on a yellow and also walking a tight line.

Yes I was going to post the same. Mehmeti was on a yellow and making a few tackles. Plus he was getting fouled an moaning at the referee when he didn't get anything. So it was a logical move.

From a footballing perspective it was a good decision. Núñez created what should have been our third goal for Azon and Mehmeti was walking a disciplinary tightrope. As far as the discipline is concerned we have to learn from that. Nuñez, Mehmeti and Davis could all have been sent off. Norwich were the dirty side and we should have used that to our advantage instead of getting on the wrong side of the officials. Cool heads needed for the rest of the season. COYB

I don't think your assessment was too far off. If Nunez had got sent off (and he did get subbed off to prevent this), it could have proven to be a stupid decision.

Intelligent people can make stupid decisions. So no harm from my side if you had simply said the decision was stupid.

I think the main issue I had was equating it to the stupidity of the Farage issue. That trivialises the Farage issue and places the decision into the realm of stackable offenses (Eg, people are saying Ashton Out). The Farage issue was a calculated decision to platform a politician that people view as a racist and a traitor. The McKenna decision was a footballing one made in a match-day moment.

like to apologize, I have nailed him to a mast in the past out of my frustration at times, but he's a clever manager coach, he did say it would take time to come together,
The 23/24 squad had heart this squad is better more guile,
This squad with a few additions will fair better in the premiership for sure we're more balanced and not gung ho very patient,
So apologies to kieran m,

Hi - that’s fair and you are of course entitled to your view.

You are right, I should have said it was idiotic (in my view) and not that he’s an idiot. Which he isn’t - he’s a club legend.

On the Farage point though, I think I’ll stick to my guns. I do hear what you say but in my opinion, both were spectacularly bad bits of judgement from two people we’ve come to expect the highest standards from.

There was no plausible scenario from the Farage situation where anything good could have come from it.

Similarly - I didn’t see any realistic scenario where bringing Nunez on yesterday was going to help us see the game out. We were so on top it was laughable.

Fair play nrb. Your first sentence is spot on and in life we all get stuff wrong. Be a dull old world if we didn’t.
