Does anyone else find McKenna's comments yesterday worrying? 19:24 - May 3 with 3788 viewsDublinBlue84

He was making comments like saying he is going to enjoy this one before thinking too much about what is next and needs a holiday. It almost sounds like code for having a holiday to think about what is next.

This totally contradicts previous comments in past promotions when I am sure he was saying that the planning for next season starts today and about how much he was looking forward to managing us in the Premier League. Maybe he's just tired though.

Maybe I'm worrying too much but that's exactly what I would say if I was not sure if I was going to be here next year but I didn't want to say it in the heat of the moment and until after the celebration on Monday

From any of the interviews or words I have seen with him, he's not once directly mentioned next season or managing us next year. True he's not said anything to suggest he actively won't be, but part of me is worrying that the change in language suggests they're managing this.

No. Said he'd start thinking about next season in a week or two.

No USA tour pre-season? 😮. Guess it being World Cup year might make the logistics a bit tougher than usual. But next year has to be the year, right?! The least our ownership group deserves 😃

Any club that puts income into the US Treasury before November 2028 is absolutely mad if you ask me.

Give the bloke a chance, he's come off a tough relegation season, straight into a very challenging Championship season which has gone the distance and been a hugely difficult last 6 weeks, plus some player challenges through the season.

Maybe he's just knackered physically and mentally and needs a break before he starts talking about what he needs for our PL challenge, not to mention he has probably learned a lot about what to say the about the PL challenge this time around.

It's quite likely he doesn't need to say anything about us, as he just assumes no-one is going to analyze every sentence he speaks withing 24 hours of getting promoted . . . of course it could be [ahem] "code" that he is leaving to take over at Real Madrid, but I doubt it.

Ha, if KM thinks managing us this season was stressful, I'd most definitely advise him to ignore the suggestion ( tongue in cheek, I know! ) of Real Madrid. Clubs a basket case and run by the players. Of course, if he just wants to take the money and run......

People who worry about KMc leaving, should remember that he needs to find a job to walk into. And presumably a job that pays the same or more than his current salary. Any club would also have to pay the £5M compensation or whatever it is.

I can't see him going abroad, so his options are pretty limited. Of the PL clubs needing or possibly needing a new manager this summer, only Fulham is a realistic option IMO as I don't think Palace will be prepared to pay the compo.

This, he is very unproven in the PL and although teams like Fulham and Palace have better recent history I am not sure they are a step up.

It's a difficult one from his perspective, a second relegation may seriously harm his chances of PL management in the future but if he goes elsewhere and gets it wrong he'll be gone within 6 months.

I think we have another bounce us in us before we'll be good enough to stay up but is KM in it for the long term?

I think contractually unless someone is desperate for him he stays.

Yes, I got that vibe too.

Not so much from the comments about needing a holiday, which is understandable, but the comment about there being lots of difficulties and challenges this season he didn't want to elaborate on.

Also there's been a lot of sighing from him this season throughout interviews and generally looking stressed and coming over as quite down that I can't remember from previous promotion seasons.

Time will tell but whether he does stay or go, he's left us in a great position.

No doubt the pressure of being favourites and it going down to the wire has weighed heavy on his shoulders.

As for the difficulties and challenges, I can name four off the top of my head:
- The Hutchinson saga at the start of the season and his refusal to play against Brum
- Having to manage the expectations of players not getting a game. I can't imagine Akpom and Cajuste have just been sitting patiently in the wings given how hard we went after both.
- Clearly something was wrong in the dressing room that he had to deal with. We know generally that Szmodics was causing issues given the comments from both sides after he went to Derby.
- The Farage debacle. KM has kept his own opinions to himself, but he did say there were some unhappy campers in the dressing room.

Add to that players like Chaplin and Morsy who had been strong characters in the dressing room since his day one not being there - it will have felt like a much harder season that two years ago.

Also

Id imagine at some points the building works at the training must have caused some annoyance too. Little things that just add up into further annoyances id imagine.

I was thinking this after the game yesterday. Going through his options in my head but then remembered their new manager signed on for 5 years. The win tonight helps them as well, that’s a big 3 points they just need to hold it together now.
I can’t think of another club that he would leave for, at a push the only place might be Newcastle as the fans love an ex Ipswich man round the place.

Wouldn’t expect De Zerbi to hang around if they get relegated, I’d guess there’s a clause that allows him to leave as I can’t imagine him wanting to manage in the Championship. Whether KM would want another season of slog to try and get them up is debatable, even given the lure of riches to play with if he manages an unprecedented 4th successive EFL promotion season.

I'll say this very respectfully.

As someone who has a tendency to overthink I understand your trepidation, but honestly I think he just wants a holiday, which is entirely understandable.

Perhaps, but wondered whether the US might be viewed as a bit of a difficult place to visit at the present time.

No Hob Nobs, and cheese is mostly hard to get and very expensive. Also, kettles are not really a thing in the US, so a tea urn would be required.

Blame Gav, Phil is more restrained with biscuits and cheeses, so I hear.

Last time we were promoted he spoke a lot about managing in the Premier League and looking forward to it, yesterday was all about the holiday and what is next for him without directly mentioning managing us being that 'next'

I think he will be out manager at the start of next season , I would suggest he hasn't completed the task until he keeps us up next season. Certainly hope so .
