Quizzed on whether promotion hastens the rebuild of the Cobbold Stand, a medium to long-term aim, Ashton added: “Over the next couple of months you will see numerous plans coming out for Portman Road and the areas around Portman Road.
“We work really well with the council, they’ve been really supportive. Not only do we want to build a football club, we want to help regenerate this town. We’re passionate about that.
“I’d say watch this space because I think there’ll be more things coming out over the next few months.”
Not sure we've talked about this.
Will it be plans for the Cobbold? Plans for the roof being popped off the West Stand and another tier being chucked on top? (Good God that will be high) As I suspect - The council starting work on the Aquatic Centre and the line of Portman Road being shifted? Or Something Else?

I'm with you, I find it utterly bizarre, are there that many kids into Swimming? My boys and all their friends learnt to swim, after that they had no interest.
Seems like another Snoasis to me.
Yeah, and not to mention its pretty much replacing like for like.

Actually quite tasty, innit, but where have the dugouts gone?
The new stand shown is where Cobbold is currently.
Would it be possible to build a new tier behind Cobbold. Then remove the roof of the current Cobbold Stand moving everyone up to the new upper Cobbold. Demolish old Cobbold following closed season.
Didn’t Charlton just remove the roof , extend to stand and put a new roof on.

Another tier on top of West stand will be quite something. Better than having 3k or 4k fans with nowhere to go but won’t be much of a view from up there, surely?
I still wonder if there’s a way to knock down half the Cobbold - leave enough room for away fans - and get on with building a new half, then knock down the away section and finish it off.
The logistics and financing and uncertainty of what league we’ll be in, make this a complex project. Sooner we start the better.
I'm sure it's possible. I remember WBA building a new stand in the eighties in stages (i.e. they built one half and then the other).
I'm told the car park would be used as the fanzone, whilst doing the work on the expansion
And it would be a significant expansion given they want it big enough to house all the Cobbold supporters prior to moving them over for the Cobbold rebuild!

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

South stand car park I assume?
Would make sense with the new digital displays and ad boards going in there.

With capacity and facilities, I would imagine that some of it will come down to non-ITFC use as well.
We'd probably still be too small for use at any men's tournaments (stadia for Euro 2028 appear to have a minimum capacity of 50,000) but a decent capacity would put us in the frame for women's tournaments, for example. At Euro 2022, eight of the ten stadia had capacities under 35,000.
There's a gaping hole in East Anglia when it comes to distribution of tournament venues, so hopefully a decent increase in capacity would put us on the map.
It'd also help with concerts and the like.
The setup would be interesting for sure, especially with the suggestions that the FanZone may be getting a remodel/upgrade over the summer as well.
I wouldn't be surprised if any works on the stand might look to bring the footprint backwards a bit, over the open area which currently sits between the FanZone fence and the stand itself. That might help with replacement of the roof and the addition of extra seating, by creating the ability to build back and cantilever the stand externally. I can imagine that one of the smaller goals of any project will be to remove restricted views from the stand.
About 44 - 45k was the capacity required for the 2018 bid so you had a ridiculous sitation where the likes of Plymouth and Reading were suggesting they could expand that substantially to make the bid

I’ve posted this previously but Palace’s plan would suit us perfectly when it comes to upgrading the Cobbold…
“The construction of the new stand will look to be built around the existing structure, with the aim of keeping the stadium fully operational throughout the build. The video below demonstrates how this process is envisaged to take place.”

The linked post says that was his AI vision of the remodelled Cobbold Stand, not the West Stand, so the dugouts would still be opposite.
Perhaps, though I'm curious to see whether the new Cobbold Stand may house a revamped main club reception and include new changing rooms, tunnel on the half-way line and dugouts over on that side.
I'm sure Ashton once said something about the main entrance to the club being on the wrong side of the stadium.

Looking at the incredibly slow progress of Wrexham’s new stand doesn’t inspire any confidence that the new Cobbold will be in operation anytime soon. 2032/33 maybe? Unless… Gamechanger folks can ship over a team of Amish builders, in which case the new stand will be ready by next week.
Aparently the Wrexham new stand has been held up by the fact that vital electric cables ran just behind the old stand and were very difficult to re-route.

Interesting that. Especially as that stand looks eerily similar to the rendering of the new Cobbold in the Aquatic Centre development fly through.

Genuine Question:
Is there a serious need for a new aquatics centre? I appreciate Crown Pools must be 40+ years old now, but would a multi million pound refurb not work?
I may be rude ( I live in Straya ), but the crown pool building was always too small. Ipswich should have at least one Olympic size swimming pool. A new pool in the Portman road area could allow for that. However I did notice the proposed new pool was only 25m long. It's been 44 years since I lived in Ipswich but as a kid in the 1960's we had 2 indoor pools at 25 yards. Fore Street and St.Mathews Baths, and 2 outdoor at 50 yards, Broom Hill, and Pipers Vale. It's not good that the town facilities are now less than what they were 50 plus years ago. Is this typical of all sporting and recreational facilities now? Where is the closest open to the public 50 metre pool to Ipswich?
