While we're on the subject of old managers ... John Lyall. 20:43 - May 7 with 1885 viewsITFC_Essex

Underrated really. Promoted us with good football, on peanuts, rejuvenated John Wark, kept us in the top flight for three seasons, again on a limited budget. Excellent youth system which Burley benefitted from. One of our best managers during a tough time for the club, which was the post-Robson comedown. He actually built us back up.

Man was a gentleman, didn't cheat or take bungs to sign duff players when it was the fashion, played it by the book and credit for him for even attempting the Gabriel Batistuta signing, alongside Tony Cottee, how things could have played out differently if we had him them in our side in 1994/95!

I’d forgotten we went after Tony Cottee. Or possibly I never knew.

I remember Burley trying to get a very young John Terry from Chelsea, which obviously didn’t get very far.

Yep. I said earlier in the week when people were suggesting KM is now ahead of Burley for a statue …

KM needs to prove himself in the premier league first.

The likes of Lyall and Burley remain ahead of kM in my mind … at least for the time being.

Chelsea accepted a bid from Huddersfield when Terry was 18/19 - think it was around £750k. Terry said no, and he was well on the way to becoming a Chelsea legend (and a complete bell end as well).

Didn’t realise that we were after him as well.

Absolutely! The last manager to actually WIN a division. Champions! Haven't heard a Town team call that for a third of a century. Didn't get an open top bus ride for being second-best in those days.

Never forget that on 7th. April 2021, for ITFC, the Game Changed.

As much as I have loved the last four years (well not last season), that Lyall promotion season is up there for me as good as any. Doubling the then money bags Blackburn, Liverpool away in the cup…

The players didn’t get medals either. Or the club a trophy.

Same window, he was obviously close to Cottee and tried to swing him over to us but he opted to go back to West Ham instead. We definitely needed some firepower.

We did get Steve Sedgley. which while not looked at as a big deal, was quite a coup for us at the time.

It's worth remembering that Lyall was already a legend for his spell with the spammers. He bought in quality top flight talent like Goddard and Whitton. Also worth remembering that along with Mick mcgiven they kept us in the top flight for 3 seasons on a shoestring.

Thought George was linked with signing his nephew, Craig Burley?

I think that was an assumption made, but at the time we couldn't afford to match what he made at Chelsea, Celtic and then Fulham, I think it was, who were paying way over the odds wage wise to get good players there.

Yes, one of those very good managers that has somehow gone under the radar. I remember almost dropping a coffee I had in my hand when I grabbed a copy of the " Evening Star " and saw Town after Gabriel Batistuta! It would be like us signing Sergio Aguero in his prime! One of the worlds top strikers at the time. I don't think that ever came near to happening, but I'm a fan of thinking big!

Randomly recall we started 91/92 with just 3,000 season ticket holders. Pretty sure that was the figure reported in the EADT at the time.

Great pairing, it all just clicked. Gav Johnson, underrated, had a big impact in the promotion year and the first year in the Premier.

Lyall did well with what we had & adding his West Ham old boys Whitton & Goddard was effective, but he benefited from the emergence of Dozzell & Kiwomya as forwards who were too good for the 2nd tier. The pity was that Lyall seemed to lose interest & handed over the reins to the charmless McGiven, under whom the football was utterly turgid.

I think Burley and KM are on even footing. The championship is much harder than it used to be as is the gulf in quality from the top to the bottom of the premier league. To be fair, both manager brought a lot of joy to the town base in my lifetime and both will live in my brain as legends.

GB's rating is lower in my view for his abysmal summer transfers in 2001.
And no, getting Hassan Kachloul would probably have made things worse.
Getting Mart Poom instead of Sereni may have made a marginal difference, but Sereni was good in the first half of the season.

Burley is ahead of anyone else for a statue because of his contribution as a player and manager. It’s easy to forget, but he made 500 appearances for this club and I cannot think of a better full back in all my time watching us. Lovely player. Then his time as manager. 413 games in 8 years, following the 1994 collapse with not a lot of resources. No debate for me.

If KM establishes us in the PL, that may promote him above George on the managerial front.

On to John Lyall. I wish he’d come to us say 3 years earlier. He was a terrific manager who got the best from people. I gather he was quite an ‘old school’ disciplinarian but you’ll never hear a former player speak badly of him. His promotion team played with style and a certain swagger when it was on it. They were a terrific team that in the end smashed the old Div 2 in 92. Loved it.

He’s very under rated is Mr Lyall. Excluding the pre Robson era and before, he comes in after GB and McKenna, slightly ahead of Royle and McGarry. All these were light years better than Ferguson, Duncan, MM and the utter dross that was Keane, Jewell, Hurst and Windbag.

Sums it up perfectly also when he moved to one side the team performance declined notably.
