More Walthamstow news this - Lee Bridge marina is a fantastic place in the marshes (you could be in norfolk in certain views). I had no idea that bods on boats had to pay council tax - no idea why, as they would get no services and pay the marina for water and electricity / rubbish, plus the water authority license for their boats..
Does this apply to boats in continuous cruising license out of interest and if so, which council do they pay
I suppose it's not much difference to travellers who live on a yard in a chalet or trailer. They pay council tax.

Leaving aside the legality of what he has done, the boat featured in the Mail doesn't look like it would be very warm in winter.
I say that as someone who spent a few days on the Norfolk Broads in a similar boat in February 50 odd years ago.
I don't think I've ever felt colder.

He’s supposed to be Green and he’ll have been burning the equivalent of the Amazon Rainforest each day just to keep the mildew away. Clegg OUT!
I’d love a canal boat. I could afford one (probably, but haven’t checked lately) but have never done anything about it. There’s something magical about tootling down a canal and mooring up wherever you want for the night. I can imagine whole winters are a bit miserable though. Fine for a few days.

Once a politician becomes relevant the digging starts - best thing for him to do is to be utterly shameless, shrug his shoulders and tell journalists that that is all in the past.
Like Starmer’s suits, this is going to get played far more than Farage’s racism and £5 million ‘gift’.
And that says a lot about this country.
And about the OP

Presumably he’d still call the fire brigade if his boat caught fire, or the police if someone broke in and stole his dentures.
There’s probably no one in any community that isn’t using local services of some sort. I reserve judgement until more comes out, but a tax dodge is certainly going to be more damaging than any of his made up jobs.

Exactly.... fine on a warm summer's day
Unbearable in the cold and damp of the winter
Go to bed on a winters evening ... unless you have had the fire going all day your bedding is damp
Get up in the morning.... unless you have had the fire going all night your clothes are damp

That sounds like the voice of experience, or incontinence lol. I think I’ll stick to renting in the summer. Owning one is probably a faff anyway. You probably have to put it in dry dock and scrape barnacles off it every year or something.

far dos, I hadn't thought about the other services a person might use there.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Guess I'm just The Invisible Woman then -
And today, Zack will be……. by Ryorry11 May 14:49 So ZP didn’t get his refuse collected from the houseboat/bungalow address, and wouldn’t have made use of local fire/police services (+ driving a car on local roads, if he/his partner had one) if he needed them?
Every household that fails to pay their council tax but uses the council for such services drives the cost up for everyone else, who then end up paying more. It’s not just illegal/antisocial, it’s selfishly cheating your neighbours. Doesn’t exactly endorse his “caring about others” image does it.

This seems a bit desperate from the Telegraph. He was indeed working at the MOJ (supplied by an agency) on training & diversity programme(s). Yet according to the scoop “However, the Ministry of Justice has reportedly said it has no record of him being employed in that capacity”.
Well, no he never said he was employed. He said he was working at, which he was. Nice strawman if nothing else.
The responses to failures in vetting candidates is far more worthy of scrutiny and he needs to be continually pressed on that. His council tax issue will also be looked at and he should face action if it’s proven he deliberately mislead/made false claims/entries.
Pls don't bring rational scrutiny into a pile on by the usual people

A good night to bury bad news.
Man who "unintentionally" fails to pay tax, plans to hike the top 0.x%'s, and fully expects the tax-gap to be the same as it is now with broader taxation. They're also the top 0.x% most mobile and able to intentionally avoid it. Polanski is off his tits. But "tax the rich" sells, just like "blame the immigrants" does. Populism on both hard-right and hard-left will screw the country. I despair at how gullible ~50% of British voters are right now.
If Polanski was front-bench Tory or Labour, there'd be calls for his resignation. Angela Reyner had to resign in the autumn despite making the same "unintentional" claim. Do as I say: "pay more tax", not as I do: pay less than the law says I should.

I fully supported the Greens, leafletted for them locally over several campaigns whilst Caroline Lucas was their leader, because as well as their overarching drive towards better environmental care, she had integrity - despite my disagreeing with a few of her/their detailed policies at the time.
Just cannot feel similarly drawn to this version of the Green Party & its current leader though. And I know I'm not alone in that.

My favourite ‘Green’ Party moment was the councillor in Bolton who celebrated his win in his V10 Lambo. Nothing says caring about the environment like a 5l 10 cylinder sports car!

I take it you accept that there's a massive ethical imperative to rebalance the taxation system - both personal and corporate - to address poverty, inequality, and the collapse of national infrastructure, just not Polanski's way?
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Just playing devil's avocado here, but surely it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he did make an unintentional mistake due to his very unique living circumstances?
Also, why would you be against taxing the rich more... unless you're one of them? Is it necessarily "populism" to want a fairer tax system?
Again, just playing devil's advocate because these things tend to turn out to be not as cut and dried as they first seem and I'd like to know more detail before making my decision.
