People will have bet on Soton to win, players to score, teams to progress.
You can't just go back and say that team won 3-0.

Apparently Steve Gibson at Middlesbrough is engaging 'top sports lawyer' Nick Di Marco so they're not going quietly if EFL do slap Southampton's wrist. |
There will be a case for a Civil Claim against Southampton from:
Middlesbrough
And, if spying ahead of other matches is proven:
Wrexham, who missed out on sixth and a one in four shot at approx £200m because Southampton may have gained points through acting in bad faith and breaking a specific EFL rule.
But also:
Any team whose position may have been adversely altered by dropping points to Southampton.
eg if Oxford played Southampton under Eckert twice, and lost them both then they could argue that there is the potential that their fight against relegation has been impacted by Southampton's cheating.

And every team could sue for the difference in prize money a three point (if they played Southampton under Eckert once) or six point (if they played them under him twice) swing would have netted them.
The EFL have to throw Southampton out of the Play Offs, if the most recent incident is proven, and at the very least demote Southampton to League One, if other incidents regarding matches during the season are proven, as they would have acted in bad faith and jeopardised the sporting integrity of the whole Championship Season. | | | |

What would you do? It's extremely difficult now the EFL have let the matches be played.
For instance, if it's a fine then unless the fine is 140m then it actually incentivises more spying from any team in and around the playoffs and automatic promotion. If you can spy, get fined 2m but make a 138m profit on the exercise then many teams may see that as acceptable.

Depends if there is credible evidence of them doing it more than once. Tough position for the EFL no doubt. I just think I’d more inclined to ban the coach for a season if there are links to him, dock points next year (get the PL onside with this if they got promoted) and max possible fine.
If they’ve been doing it all year and it’s proved maybe chuck them out but why didn’t this come up previously if other clubs have evidence? |  |

If Boro go on and win at Wembley that’s not credible either IMO.
Going to be pretty hard to convince a commission that Saints achieved a big edge at the riverside after watching that first half of the first leg.
I can see southampton staying in and Boro getting big financial compensation, wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what Gibson is aiming for either. | |

Not sure the Independent Commission has the power to award compensation. There'll be a fine, but Boro won't see a penny of that.
Boro could sue for damages but that's fraught with difficulty. There's likely to be a clear breach of rules, but that's the easy bit. Working out what Boro have lost by way of damages is problematic. Proving that there was a causal link between the breach and the loss...good luck with that one! | |
