Off to Düsseldorf and Cologne in a few weeks for a boys weekend.

Anyone been and have any good recommendations?

Are there any Fortuna Pubs worth checking out?

Cheers!

....tournament a few years back.

Just head for Aldstadt, "The longest bar in the world".

Bolker St is the main drag from memory, half a mile of "sheer bars".

You can do a brewery trip, they brew a specific dark beer there, not to my taste but very popular.

Tip: In the bars remember to put your beer mat on top of your glass (or not obvs) or they just keep refilling it.

"Alt Beir" is the dark beer iirc

The one I always used to drink in Duss was Sclosser Alt

With an Apfelkorn chaser

I was sent on detachment there a few times in the military, early 1980s

Is the Apfelkorn chaser apple schnapps? If so, I’ve had that and the pear version which German ski chums totally blitzed me with. Cracking night.

Went to Cologne a few years ago and loved it. Some great history and architecture and a genuinely lovely place to wander around and take it in at your leisure i.e not heaving with knobheads, not a sprawling metropolis. Lots of things within walking distance

I remember some sort of cable car that went over the Rhine to a park that also had a nudist spa (could see in from the cable car)
A Particularly lively Jazz bar off the main square
And a Beautiful Cathedral

Aye, that's the one. The bottle had a picture of an apple

Korn is a very different drink, like rocket fuel

But Apfelkorn was smoother and refreshing, served ice cold it teeny tiny ice cold glasses

As they do in Cologne with Kolsch beer - they'll keep bringing you small glasses until you make them stop. I think the waiters are effectively self employed buying beer from the bar and serving it with a bit added on.

That's is how I remember the waiters keeping us refuelled; they could buy the beer at the bar at a discount and then sell it at a mark-up to us as we sat at out table.

They would mark the edge of your beer mat to keep a score on what you owed, different symbols for different drinks

A savvy waiter could sell an awful lot of those 0.2l glasses of beer to a table of thirsty squaddies and with crisp service and a bit of banter, earn themselves a sizeable tio on top.

A very civilised way to drink, although 0.2 of a litre is a very small amount of beer

Dusseldorf: At this time of year all the riverside bars are alive, and there’s a huge fairground across the water. What’s not to like?

Cheers!

I don’t remember the bottle, just the contents. They were small glasses but after 10 of them in no time at all, the feelings in the legs departed.

They were small pear version had a little ball of pear across the top skewered by a cocktail stick. Like that made a difference. But I suppose the five a day was sorted!

Very hospitable the Germans. Stayed in Bavaria on golf trips a few times too and they couldn’t be better hosts.

I have been to Koln and Hamburg both are really nice places.

Have a look round Koln Cathedral,I did you can climb right to the top of it,I did and I’m not scared of heights, but blimey looking down on the Christmas Market was really special. There was a old boy in the bell tower and he just sits there checking the bells out etc.

Hamburg was nice, did a boat trip from Harwich, once entering the river that goes up to Hamburg you spend a long time travelling up it through some fantastic scenery.

Have a good trip.

Spent a few days there a few years back. The pubs of the Altstadt are great, I would recommend the Goldener Kessel and Schlussel for food and the best altbier. Der Uerige is good too, those of a certain age may remember it for some scenes from Auf Wiedersehen Pet being filmed there.

As for Cologne, the climb up the cathedral is will worth it but don't do what we did and go up just before noon so we got the full bell peal for midday whilst on the same floor as the bells!

Fruh am Dom just across the road is a huge pub, well worth a visit, and the advice to put a mat on your glass if you don't want another is well made. We watched a group of Japanese tourists get absolutely wasted as they were too polite to not drink what they were given. When my wife put a mat on her glass to miss a round, they pointed, smiled and realised what they had done wrong. Hilarious, particularly after 9 or 10 kolsches!

What’s wrong with beer refills? As long as it’s with beer. I was told last year in Munich that if you attend the beer/Oktober fest, never leave your glass under the table if you don’t want it refilled with something other than beer.

Won't go wrong in the Altstadt as others have said for Dusseldorf, but I would recommend going to the Japanese Quarter/Little Tokyo for food - some brilliant ramen etc. to be had (big Japanese community in Dusseldorf). My second food recommendation is Lukas Podolski kebabs which I think are the best you'll have anywhere (they are all over both Dusseldorf and Cologne). On beer, Koelsch in Cologne is beautiful, Altbier in Dusseldorf is the most disgusting thing you'll ever drink.

If you wear an Ipswich shirt in Düsseldorf, you will likely be made very welcome. Wonderful city.

My offerings as a background i met my wife (german) in 2015 at the friendly and we have lived in Düsseldorf for the last 11 years. Bolkerstrasse is the beer street but it gets very very busy tourists and prices reflect this, our favourites are the schussel brauhaus (top of bolkerstrasse on left) also a good kebap place next door, further along on the left is Auberge very friendly and less hectic, carry on to bottom of bolkerstrasse if you turn left you have uerige brahaus very nice, or if you turn right pass the rauthaus you come to burgplatz a nice place is Im Golden Ring in the right corner , nice outside seating area, great service and less of tourist prices, incidentally the Fortuna fan shop is opposite, also a favourite is from there down on to the river called Kaassematten turn left and there are numerous bars overlooking the river our favourite is Weisse Flotte Biergarten, be careful with Bolkerstrasse at weekend nights heavily policed by German and Dutch police but overall safe just always check your bill they are not adverse to adding a couple of drinks on it, also carry a few coins with you because in Brauhaus you should tip the toilet attendent hopes this helps any more information contact me, as for Köln never go there if possible full of goats and shite beer

On a work trip to Dusseldorf a few years back I went to Brauerei Schumacher on Oststrasse, which is a bit away from the Altstadt, to the south east.

Was a good place for a meal and some beers, with a nice outdoor area at the back.
