It's exciting though. Out of interest, how would you decide it?

Yet in 56 years since they were introduced no better way of deciding a tied knockout game has been found.

I'd probably want to level the balance a bit more - with the power and placement in modern shoot-outs, they now seem to be decided by errors or superhuman keeping. Maybe the old MLS way of resolving draws - dribble-and-shoot?

There's something to be said for that. It would still be exciting. I wouldn't be adverse.

It's exactly the right way of deciding a football match. You know, a test of skill involving at least 6 players from each team. I suppose they could juggle for it, play chess or tell jokes to decide the winner.

Not convinced. It is a team game yet there is a massive burden on the poor guy who misses.

I hope I'm wrong, but I get the feeling that 'silly goose' is the mildest of the abuse that Eze and Gabriel are going to be facing tonight.

You mean like how it often is during 90 mins. Literally today, Dembele gets a pressure penalty when team was 1-0 down. [Post edited 30 May 20:31]

Penalties are as bad as any other tie-break, but they occur too often. Some teams play for pens from half-time, which kills the spectacle. I'd make them less likely by deciding the game on corners won. Will lead to more goals bc defences will be reluctant to give them away. Defenders will be forced to take risks to avoid conceding corners. Teams will be incentivised to attack and create chances rather than low-block for most of the game. Games will be much more likely to be decided by football and goals, not a glorified staring contest. [Post edited 30 May 20:48]

Start extra time where each team loses a player, then every five mins lose another player until golden goal. Or jokingly, similar like the old Budweiser advert from years back, multi-ball. Random extra balls on the field of play until someone scores.

It would be tough, because it's somewhat subjective, but I'd definitely be all in favour of run-ups having to be a constant pace. Sod it, if you're going to get prescriptive, set a maximum of three steps for the run-up.

During extra time I'd make each team remove a player every 5 minutes until they are down to 5 a side - first goal wins. The problem with the old golden goal set up was that both teams just sat in and waited for penalties.

I always thought that was a better option. Similar to the penalty shoot out but there's more skill and less luck involved for the keeper and it tests the striker more too as strategy is involved not just hitting it.

Gabriel at least took a decent run up by skied it. Eze done that annoying prancing about before kicking the ball. Just pick a spot run and hope for the best. Think it will be mixed - it probably helps that they are two of the most popular players in the team but they'll still be getting pelters from some and other teams.

Tell me when a football match hasn't been decided by errors or superhuman keeping. Even when Maradona dribbled around half the England team to score, you could argue that the were errors from the defenders and there was certainly a rather major one from the officials in that match!

Not having that. Penalties at the end of the 120 minutes is the best way.
| Penalties on 22:09 - May 30 with 635 views | ITFC1977 | I think at that standard ( or any infact ) there’s no excuse to not hit the target. They should be able to hit it relatively into the corner and if the goalie saves it then it is what it is. Missing the target is criminal. | | | |

It sounds good on first viewing but I would just wonder whether there are potential problems with teams working to manufacture corners, referees getting more criticism for getting the decision wrong on awarding them and teams playing safe possession football to see out a win on corners won. Maybe xG would be a fairer way to decide it if the scores are level?
