So we would go to the newsagent to get our comics then walk to the Odeon in town, pay 2 1/2 p on the door and watch a Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello short film, a Children's Film Foundation movie, an episode of Zoro and a black and white Batman film. A girl would come around with ice lollies at half time.

When very young it was The Dandy, which during the week I’d swap with The Beano and Beezer. Sweets (lucky bags, sherbet lemons, refreshers, fruit salad, chocolate toffee rolls, wine gums - sweets in jars! Not all, just something. A percentage I always saved. Right from the off.
Later, it was Commando books, Shoot of course and Airfix or Revell kits plus paints, brushes etc. and a percentage saved. it always took an age to save for stuff and supplement, but I’d find a way.
From about 12 money had to be found for cigarettes and from about 13/14 alcohol and going out when opportunity and time allowed. |  | | |

Airfix kits and all the gubbins that went with them.The same comics that many have mentioned.
Back then you could buy a Airfix kit in a little bag for under 20p.The local toy shop would have it all it also had cabinets rammed with used metal toys many made by Corgi,Dinky and Matchbox.
We all seemed to have push bikes as well but they were Christmas or Birthday presents. |  |

I had three paper rounds in 1984 which paid me the princely sum of £9.80 per week, plus tips at Christmas (once made £50 in 1985). This was paid in a little brown paper packet, the newsagent always asking if I had 20p so he could hand me a tenner.
I'd be up at 6am on a Saturday and Sunday, 6.30am on a schoolday. Sundays were the worse as the Sunday papers were bloody massive.
I spent my earnings on Whizzer and Chips, Buster, Beano, Roy of the Rovers, Tiger and Beezer comics, pick and mix, Panini Stickers, mini glass bottles of 7-up, chips with fried onions from the local chinese (only every now and then cos they were expensive at £1.20), dog treats for our labrador and subbuteo teams.
Bigger items had to be saved for, so i put three quid in a piggy bank weekly and got £2 pocket money to make it a fiver. At the end of a typical month, I'd empty the piggy bank and take it to the proper bank to change into crisp £5 notes.
Everything was better in the 80's. No computers or mobiles, hardly any litter, stuff was affordable. TWTD |  |

As I had an older brother who was a builder I’d sometimes go In on a Saturday Morning and help him clear out the houses,I could earn £5 in a morning which stayed in my pocket about 10 mins.

Strangely enough I never got pocket money. We would go into Stowmarket on a Saturday on Braybrookes bus and mum would buy me a Dinky toy. My gran often gave me some money to get sweets at the local shop and I regularly got a comic.
In my early teens I worked on farms and was paid 1 shilling and 6d an hour. Around 7.5p today. I also went with mates potato and bean picking which was cash in hand in school holidays.
It's sad really that kids these days either won't or are not allowed to work on farms due to health and safety or whatever. It taught me the value of money. | | | |

Airfix kits and Warlord comics from the big newsagent's in Clare and, on one hilarious occasion, a tin of snuff from the little tobacconist opposite the Priory: that's a short, messy story involving four idiot 8-year-olds and a shopkeeper with a puckish sense of fun. |

Randomly, one thing I do remember was, when I was about 6 or 7, I got double my age in pocket money. So at 6 I got 12p and that increased to 14p on my 7th birthday.
I wonder what the equivalent would be, in terms of spending power, today.
My first paper round paid 1.50 for 7 days a week. | |
