Problems with the building work at ITFC 11:08 - Jun 4 with 5294 viewslurcher

Large amounts of asbestos have been found in the ground under the fanzone. The programme was already weeks behind and now many projects have been halted to get a specialist clearance company in.

What other projects have been halted?

I thought we were 'only' expanding the West Stand concourse, replacing the PA system and possibly sorting the WiFi this summer.

If there is any clearance of asbestos to do they will have to stop any access into the fanzone whilst removal is underway.

You don't take any risks with that stuff.

Saw what it did with my Uncle back in the early 80's having worked on building sites for the first half of his life and at ICI Fibres for the second half.

Electrician friend of mine died of complications from asbestosis. Years of drilling into old fuse-boxes without a mask in enclosed spaces.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The concourse at the back of the west and the fan zone are stalled. I don't know about the wifi and PA. But it is feasible that crawl spaces in the lower south, Cobbold and the west lower all have issues with asbestos. I am told it is not just whats dumped under ground

But you're making it sound like this is all a big sudden surprise.

I posted months ago in one of the stadium development threads that it was full of asbestos and around it, you could tell that just by looking it at and its interior closely and would make any quick redevelopment super tricky.

What did people expect ? it was built in the late 50s and expanded in the 80s when asbestos was just as common a building material as bricks or steel.

Same with Cobbold, and Churchmans because they just built on top of the old stand, north probably escaped because it was just a concrete base with a roof.

Not sure they were expecting to find it under the astro in the Fanzone.

I have been told that the proper process of checking for the stuff wasn't carried out.

The large amount under the practice pitch/fanzone was totally unexpected.

You'd normally be looking at 2-3 weeks for removal on a commercial job. I would imagine timescales were already tight.

Yup.

My great uncle died of Asbestosis back in late-2020, at the age of 85.

He'd spent his apprenticeship in the 1950s with the Central Electricity Generating Board, as it was known back then, and part of his work had involved smashing asbestos lagging off pipework with no protective equipment whatsoever. My great aunt, who would only have been a child at the time, remembered her brother coming home covered in white dust.

That generation has all passed away now, but it's a miracle that nobody else in that household died of anything asbestos-related.

The Cobbold (Portman) Stand was built on the site of the old Chicken Run which was relocated to Foxhall Speedway track (and blown down in 87).

However, given it was put up in prefabricated sections in 1971 the extended in 74/75, I dread to think what is present within the structure. A lot of asbestos probably!

Asbestos was known as a killer by the mid 80s but I suspect more or less up until then it’s been used in building for decades and old structures with it in just buried in the ground.

Dreadful stuff. Although my mum’s brother died of a number of things asbestosis was one of them. He’d worked on the North Sea rigs back in the day and thought that’s where he’d got it - as you can imagine there was tons of the stuff on them.

Didn't work only start 3-4 weeks ago? A 3 week slip already incurred sounds unlikely so soon.

Historically, asbestos was used for an extraordinary range of things (it's why I'm very wary of doing any abrasive or drilling work on pre-1990s artex ceilings). Considered something of a miracle material.

All long before the health problems were widely understood.

The health risks of asbestos have been known for a very long time, over a century. In fact the early signs were seen in the 19th century. Successive governments failed to do anything about it because of industry lobbying and misinformation. Profits before people as usual.

Disgracefully it was only finally banned in the UK in 1999.

PA system won’t be replaced until the new stands are in.

WiFi? Doesn’t really matter.
