Would you sing the national anthem if you played for England 13:22 - Jun 8 with 5670 viewsBelsteadCav

A simple yes or no please ( I don’t want this to turn political)

I would, but I still find myself singing God save the Queen lol

Nope. I'm an atheist and a republican, so asking a fictional deity to save old sausage fingers in a song that doesn't even talk about England, seems an absolutely bizarre way to represent my country.

It may be religious in nature, but at least Jerusalem is about England and would be a better choice.

Absolutely yes, why wouldn't you?
You are representing your nation and its the national anthem. Belt it out.

I’d probably mime it, although I’d need to remember to mime King rather than Queen and learn the rest of the words first!

Why on earth would anyone not sing the anthem of their country, when it is being played before a game?

Or do you mean because of the fact the TV can hear you sing, in that case, a more valid question.

If you are born and bred English, to not sing it should be a criminal offence.

For a start "God" and "King" are things that I don't believe in. So why would I sing about them?

Half heartedly and not the line about reigning over us.

Would be different if I was Italian though, theirs anthem is a banger and sadly missing at recent world cups

Asking for a friend. What should English atheists or people that follow religions like Jedis, Jains or others do?

Nope

Although in other sports where we compete against other home nations we sing Jerusalem, and I would sing that

GSTK is played before every single top flight Ice Hockey game in England, so I'll hear it 30+ times a year home and away. Imported tradition from America which I loathe, whatever song you'd play (and I'd prefer Jerusalem because at least it's about England). Save it for special occasions at least.

Does cause some interesting friction though. In Nottingham, a significant portion of the crowd will always add in "We Hate Steelers" during the 'duh duh duh duh' bit before we "send him victorious". Thing is, it's the only bit of the National Anthem I can get behind!

what do pacifists in almost every country sing? i think the answer is that you sing along without necessarily agreeing with every word.

Yes, of course.

But I wouldn't have a hang up about someone not singing it.

Well, yeah because that's a banger. We could actually join this up with the cover version thread. Bruce Springsteen's version, of course

In all seriousness, one is something that represents an entire country on a global scale. The other is a Christmas song. It's not really much of a comparison

As i've said previously, i would sing an alternative anthem as, despite its many failings, i'm proud of being English. I'd just personally choose to put my own belief system above blindly belting out an anthem about two things i have no belief in whatsoever. Fortunately being English affords me that 'luxury'

No. Having lived out of the country for 11 years, nationality and everything that comes with it seems very bizarre.

Probably, as I couldn't be arsed with the fallout of not singing it.

Don't the people from the country that you live in have national pride?

I haven't lived in England for over 30 years. Both of the countries I haved lived in since then have very strong pride in their nations.

I’m an atheist and anti-monarchist.

That is why on earth I would not be singing a song called ‘God save the King’.

Yes - but with the proviso that I would rather we had an English sporting anthem, as the Welsh and Scots do.

Jerusalem, as used in the Commonwealth Games, works for me.

Most do, but it is nothing to do with how the locals feel. It all seems like a farce to me, you can be proud of your own accomplishment's and success. But how can you be proud of a country that you had no choice in being born into.
