| Minor irritations about the World Cup so far on 21:18 - Jun 14 by ITFC_Forever | I’ve watched most of the games with a socially acceptable kick-off time as well as the Brazil game last night and am enjoying it for the most part. Everyone from a round the world is having a nice time in the host cities …. Until the English arrive and are generally obnoxious with an unpleasant snarl at everything, to the soundtrack of the tedious Starmer song. |
Could we play the Starmer song as our goal celebration

They did this at the Euros two years ago in fairness - not just a yank thing (and a w*nk thing).

| Minor irritations about the World Cup so far on 23:38 - Jun 14 by Ryorry | Well said. Was going to post something similar along the lines of every country deserving the chance to improve & arrive at the level and quality that 'old' footballing nations have achieved after centuries of playing. To deny them that reminds me of the arrogant, dismissive comments that females have had to put up with now that FAs have deigned to allow them to play professionally. Pulling up the drawbridge by fans of nations who already have plenty of experience, history and achievement is just unacceptable prejudice & elitism. |
Hold on, we have two years of qualifying to get to this point, if you are good enough you qualify. I don’t think playing in a World Cup every 8 or 20 years will make a huge difference. Pumping cash into facilities and infrastructure and growing grassroots football in those countries will be the difference. No one’s pulling up a drawbridge, 32 teams worked well, this Doesnt.

Maybe they are but they are not good on TV: -Many seem to have the front row of fans so high, we're left looking at a high wall at the side of the pitch. -Another had huge glass doors at both ends which looked like a conservatory showroom. -The main camera position is so bad the dugouts or steps in the near stand block the view of the near touchline. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Well most of them are elite so they probably saying how it is. They are designed for a different sport in terms of sight lines (NFL players and coaches stand on the sideline so it’s raised slightly) At least we don’t have to worry about 10 being built and never used again. I think the fans are probably more interested in the experience and how the game looks from inside the stadium than viewers missing a few rows. Can’t say I’ve noticed any issues with the cameras? Pitches relayed with real grass have been perfect surfaces as well.

I think you’re missing the point. Take a country like the USA that until relatively recently had little interest in football. No point in investing in facilities, infrastructure and grassroots football if no-one, esp youngsters, is interested in playing. Encouraging more of the country’s population (esp youngsters) to engage by enthusing them with the carrot of appearing at international tournaments, eventually increases the pool of talented players that a country can draw on, which exposure in turn increases their chances of succeeding - a positive forward loop. No doubt Fifa gets other benefits out of it too, like $$, but to me the benefits for football and those who might eventually want to watch and play it that currently don’t, are greater; and personally I see it as a small price to pay if the occasional WC game is ‘mismatched’ as a result.

A brief scan of two of the multiple minnows in this years tournament tells me football is the biggest sport in Cape Verde and very popular in Curaçao second to baseball. I would suggest most are the same. So again, investment and infrastructure is the way to grow the game not participating in a tournament every decade. Most of the kids probably want to play in the premier league in Curacao not get humped by Germany.

Cape Verde have been improving for years and qualified out of a group including Cameron. They’re not immediately one of the beneficiaries of the expanded format. They might not have made it with the earlier african allocation but I wouldn’t rule it out. I’ve followed them since honeymooning there a long time ago. Curaçao’s qualification is largely down to the fact that three of the strongest CONCACAF nations have not been involved in the process as they’re there automatically as hosts. It’s likely a one off for them as it’s brought lots of minnows into the mix this time. I prefer the 32 team format, but so far there’s nothing to suggest there are going to be more mismatches here than previously.

| Minor irritations about the World Cup so far on 18:53 - Jun 14 by Swansea_Blue | Does it have to though? With enough kickback from fans there’s a chance it doesn’t go that way, but if people say nothing it certainly will. Agreed on it being hot in the summer. We hit 126° when I was there last (that was in Death Valley though lol). Footballers are obviously too pampered to handle that, but the Badwater Ultra runners aren’t such wimps. |
I don't imagine any amount of kickback from fans will make a difference unless it's on the level of the protests against the Super League, which I doubt this issue will generate. Let's face it, they have shrugged their shoulders and stuck two fingers up to fans over ticket prices, so if this is something the money folk want to do then it will happen, no matter what we say or do. Unfortunately.

From the perspective of the fans that are there, I imagine the raised stands make for much better sightlines than being sat in a front-row seat that's at pitch level.
