Would GON be the most unpopular appointment ever? 12:37 - Jun 19 with 2581 viewsBlueandTruesince82

If it is him, which it may not be but if so, would he be the least popular appointment we have ever made?

I remember a large section of support singing "You can stick Joe Royle up your @r53" and he did a pretty decent job so whoever it is we should get behind them but for me GON is a weak and short sighted appointment.

OGS not exactly setting my pulse racing but can see the thought process there.

He didn’t take Wolves down. They may well have gone down if they hadn’t sacked him, but it only bought them a 12 month reprieve. That suggests to me that the problems there went deeper than the manager

His start of zero wins in 10, did indeed take Wolves down.

I think most would be behind him, as we always do, but given the misgivings surrounding him, he'll be on a very short rope.

Got to give him the benefit of the doubt if it his him, but the jungle drums will be quick to come out should we look bang in trouble early on.

Think the reality is that whoever we appoint is going to be on a short rope.

The new manager is going to have no track record at the club, nothing they can point to that suggests they're a good fit other than what immediately happens on the pitch. We are going to want a decent crack at staying up this time and if the new manager strays too far from that, we will probably want to see if someone else can get us going. That's how it is when your current guy doesn't already have 2 good seasons in the can.

Only extra danger with an unpopular appointment is the Steve Cooper at Leicester scenario, where they do an objectively adequate (but unspectacular) job but the fans get on their back anyway.

A 29% win percentage gets us 11 wins, meaning another 7 draws added to that and we would probably stay up. What sort of win percentage are you expecting us to have next season? For reference KMc in the premier league has a 10.5% win percentage.

In my opinion this exactly the point. I keep asking for suggestions of people likely to do better or with better records but from responses on here there don't seem to be many (any) bwtter suggestions.

Seems like moat would prefer a surprise figure with a decent record abroad but NO prem experience. Wierd if you ask me!

Considering how toothless Wolves were for the 1st half of the season before he went there vs their 2nd half, and take into mind they were basically already down and as de-motivated as possible, I think he did wonders personally

I would heart-wise love OGS but head-wise it's GON all day long

The managers that took over from him at Bournemouth and Wolves immediately improved the teams. Which suggests he was at least partly responsible for their form.

And both sets of supporters loathe him.

Wolves went from being one of the worst teams in the league, to one of the best under his replacement. Only kept Bournemouth up because they had a miraculous late rally winning 5 of 7 towards the end of the season. Terrible manager who shouldn't be on the longlist yet alone favourite.

It’s not our job to know the best up and coming talented young coaches. And if the CEO is just going to appoint the blokes we all know, I’m not sure what value we’re getting.

Do you think now is the time to gamble on a young and upcoming manager? This isn't League One, and I'm not overly Enamored with GON, but he does have a body of work that suggests he gives us a fighting chance.

I would very much sign up for the Bournemouth model of staying up with a meat and potatoes manager then swapping him for a superstar in Premier League Year Two.

People cheered Hurst’s appointment to the rafters.

They also sang songs before he was appointed about what Sheepy could do with Joe Royle.

Not sure I give two fcks what the average fan thinks.

I will be right behind him and the team.

It’s just interesting the phrasing - a young foreign coach is a gamble but GON is a safe pair of hands. There’s no real evidence to suggest this. Young coaches from abroad come in and do well
In the league all the time. Glasner Iraola, hurzeler, Perreira, Silva, Frank.

I’m not sure us being a newly promoted club means we can’t appoint someone like that. To me the language reflects people’s priors and some prejudice. GON is British, knows the league and we need to scrap and fight so he’ll be good for that. Foreign managers are risky and unknown and dangerous.

I’m just not sure the data backs these theories up.

They’re both gambles so yes I’d definitely go for the gamble with a higher ceiling.

I'm not saying GON is a safe pair of hands, but he does at least have some experience of keeping a club like us up, those other managers you mention all went into clubs that were well established, we need someone who can get us there.

The Bournemouth side he kept up were statistically the worst team in the league, he just got very lucky. He kept Wolves up at the expense of what were at the time the three worst performing relegated sides in history.

His record is underwhelming, his underlying data is even worse.

Well quite, and that Bournemouth team he took over had just been promoted to the PL in 2nd place, and lost 3 of their first 4 games (prior to him taking charge) 3-0, 4-0 and 9-0 (NINE)

That Bournemouth ultimately decided to look elsewhere at the end of the season is neither here nor there, if he comes here and does similar I’d be delighted

Think that profile of appointment would be a mixture of ungettable or no more inpsiring than O'Neil is.

Could we get one of the top 10 managers in the Bundesliga or LaLiga (Iraola, Glasner)? No.

Would we be excited to promote someone from our backroom staff (Frank)? No.

Would we want a manager from the German second tier (Hurzeler)? No.

Would we want a jobbing journeyman from the Saudi Pro League (Pereira)? No.

Would we get excited about an experienced PL manager whose most recent job saw him sacked for dragging a decent-sized club into the bottom 3 (Silva)? Evidently not!

We should def be excited by a hurzeler if the data tells us he’s good. Same with Frank.

And Iraola joined Bournemouth when they were only one season ahead of us. Having barely avoided being relegated.

They stayed up because by the end of April he’d taken 36 points from the 30 games he’d been in charge - which then allowed them to phone in their last 4 from the beach

I don’t have good feeling about OGS. United always appoint former players former players who do well for a while and then fail. He was bad at a Cardiff, fired at Beşiktaş and took loads of time out of the game.

I don’t really care if he’s mates with McKenna and feels like an “Ipswich” appointment. I want a guy who has the best chance at keeping us up and not sure that’s him.

Our fanbase could do with looking at O’Neils resume outside of that 6 months of Wolves.

That said as a PL club not sure how we’ve ended up in a shootout between just these two (if it is the case).

What you are asking for here is someone sufficiently unknown to you that you can project excitement onto them. Frank had no data. Hurzeler had no data that, for e.g., Scott Parker doesn't have.

Agreed, I just think it's a very slow manager market currently, Fulham looking at Arbeloa, not sure I'd be overly convinced with that one myself.
