Unless I'm missing something... 17:46 - Jun 24 with 1382 views_CliveBaker_

Scotland are still likely to qualify for the last 32 even if they lose tonight? Media seems to be making it out to be a make or break game.

...and a load of results go against then, then yeah they'll get through.

Which is obviously ridiculous that a team can get through after losing 2 matches and beating Haiti 1-0.

But I guess the idea is to help these developing football nations.

Hopefully all the stars align and they go out in the most hilarious way.

Mad innit, beat Haiti 1-0, lose twice and find yourself in the knockouts. What a shit show of a format.

Depends on how many they lose by. I can only see Group E and maybe Group A where the third place team are likely to have less than 3 points.

This World cup could (if results go that way) even see a team get through with 1 point ffs.

The 3rd place thing has always been sh1te whenever it's been part of a tournament imho

Not only that we now have that stupid Euros rule where the head to head is a higher ranking than goal difference.

If that was in place in 1978, Scotland would have qualified from the group and the Dutch would have gone home instead of making it to the final!

Not a fan of that. It's almost like they are making a group game a knockout game in a league phase while also trying to get as many teams through as possible. It also leads to more last game dead rubbers imo. A league system should always be GD.

It's a stupid rule.

It's going to lead to some pointless dead rubber games in the final group round and, if teams rest players, some surprise results that impact other group positions.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

It already has - Mexico, Germany and USA have already won their groups under this system, whereas under goal difference they would not yet have done that.

This directly affects Group A and E which were the groups where the third place team were struggling to reach three points, but Czech Republic could now beat Mexico's 2nd XI and Ecuador could now beat Germany's 2nd XI

That's why I find these group games of so little interest, with a vast number of matches just to reduce the number of participants from 48 to 32. There should only be 32 teams in it to start with.

I totally agree goal difference should be the decider for teams on the same points.

Just to add to the absurdity of using head-to-head as the first decider when teams are on the same points...

Consider a scenario where 3rd and 4th are on the same points, where 3rd beat 4th so they go above them, but their goal difference is inferior. Now the 3rd-placed team goes into the 12-team table to determine which 8 progress to the last 32. Their inferior goal difference means they don't qualify. But the 4th-placed team's goal difference WOULD have been enough to qualify.

It's ridiculous.

It's worse than that! Imagine a World Cup where FIFA go to all this trouble to redesign the tournament to get Saudi Arabia through, and Saudi Arabia are still too shoite to take advantage of it!
