Can I bring to the attention of Sir the case of Calvert-Lewin of Leeds.

Can I bring to your attention the case of Kalvin Phillips. More or less the same age, brought in as a key component of our midfield, a marquee signing, to use that appalling phrase. He turned out to be a key component of us having no midfield whatsoever. Washed up, career sliding away. I don’t know what giving him a rest home that season cost, but if it was less than £5m I’d be very surprised. I see the same with Gabriel Jesus. Formerly a top player, isn’t now. Injury prone, appearances diminishing, not more than a 1 goal in 4 or 5 appearances for Arsenal. A hasbeen and a very expensive one. I can see why Arsenal want to unload him. They paid £45m for him and want some of their dough back. Bit like Chelsea did with one leg goal machine Broja. A big no from me.

My point being that - to get to the next level - we 'have' to be signing some quality players. I don't think anyone would argue that Jesus and Calvert-Lewin are both quality Prem players. Both have had significant issues with injury and game time. But these are calculated risks you take. Phillips was a completely different situation - a player devoid of confidence, utterly demoralised from his time at City. I'd go further and say it's now clear that, for whatever reason, he was only really quality with Bielsa. Not in the same league of Jesus and Calvery-Lewin in terms of quality.

Our recruitment definitely needs to take a serious step up, and players with PL experience I think will be really important. Gabriel Jesus is undoubtedly a fantastic talent, he has 5 PL titles and 60+ Brazil caps, but he is on huge wages, injury prone, not a natural goalscorer, and is very much a "luxury" player, the kind of player you sign when you've consolidated your place in the PL, not one you sign in the hope they keep you up. I'm sure he'll have decent PL offers, but I would imagine he'll be off to either Italy or back to Brazil, the kind of league where he can be a bit lightweight but ping nice balls around at a slower pace. That said, I'd take him in a heartbeat but not as our first choice striker.

I think it’s exactly the same situation. For a period of time, Phillips was a top player, regardless of Bielsa. 31 appearances, he was effective for England too. For whatever reason, his career has gone down the pan. We took a player with problems on the way down and got a kick in the nuts for it. Sometimes taking on a yesterday’s gravy merchant works. Look at Xhaka and Brobbey at Sunderland. Terrific signings. You just have to be very very careful who you go for and I would not chance a lot of money like Arsenal are after on an injury prone hasbeen like Jesus.

However what has reassured me is that we have been able to unearth a gem like Matusiwa from overseas recently, so hopefully 2-3 other such funds would really help. Not sure we would be able to land castoffs from top 6 sides - more likely to go to the likes of a mid table side, probably with Euro football vs a newly promoted team under new management. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I think Jesus's ego will prevent him from coming here more than anything else, he'll see himself as a title challenging player, not a relegation battling player But I agree Nwaneri is the sort of signing we should be after - someone with talent and a point to prove who plays in 2 positions we could do with strengthening (RW and AM)

It's the historic City issue, they brought him in on big bucks and Arsenal had to offer huge money to entice him. He's earned a colossal amount of money for the relatively low output he's given.

Talented player obviously, but not in our market of shopping. We'll be looking more at the Delap, Etta Eyong, Wilson Isidor
