Loving this format in the World Cup 20:29 - Jun 26 with 2348 viewsGlasgowBlue

People were saying that the final group games would be dead rubbers but so many teams have pulled out a result to qualify in third.

Plus itโ€™s fooking hilarious seeing Scotland go from 2nd to 8th in the 3rd place league in a matter of days.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Senegal beating 10 man Iraq. That's good enough to send them back to Jockland.

Pulled out a result or played for the draw they knew they needed?

The unfairness of knowing what score you needed within a group that was eradicated by playing the last games simultaneously has been replaced by the unfairness of knowing what score you need to beat teams that have already finished their group (if that makes sense!).

But agree about Scotland.

Algeria get beat by 2 they go below Scotland but to think one or more of Cape Verde, Belgium and Congo not to get results would be surprising.

I think 128 teams in one league.

Each team plays one team from 4 quality pots.

Top 16 go to the round of 32. Next 32 play-off for the round of 32. Top 16 are seeded in the R32.

I created a simulation to make it easier for people to see.

Not at all. I love football. The season is over and Iโ€™m getting my fix. Itโ€™s great. You can walk in any bar and find a game on every night. Iโ€™ll be sad when itโ€™s over.

It doesn't help that teams are hanging around not knowing if they've qualified or not having played their 3 games. Then, if they do manage to qualify, they don't have much time to prepare for the next game.

Or 16 groups of x4 with just top 2 going through to a last 32 knockout?

Ticks the box of allowing even more teams to qualify.

Infantino would combust with the excitement of having every confederation lobbying for those additional x16 placesโ€ฆ.

Don't mind the third place thing, though it's messy and vague.

However, really don't like the beating a team taking precedence over goal difference as it takes the jeopardy out of some games that otherwise might have had something riding on them.
