So what do France do differently? 23:32 - Jun 30 with 4058 viewsCheltenham_Blue

Both countries have similar populations although France have an extra 5 million men.

Yet France have won 2 Euros and 2 World Cups.
What do you think The FA would need to do? Readopt colonialism?

Centralised elite academies have certainly helped. Trained by ultra-elite coaches during the week and returned to their clubs at the weekend. The youngsters are also exposed earlier to top flight games rather than being loaned out like they are here.

And not just fur the benefit of the French national team.

ā€œ99 footballers, were born in France, according to analysis from Opta, verified by Le Monde. Among them, only 23 wear the French team's jersey. The others are mainly spread across African national teams: 13 for Algeria, 11 for the Democratic Republic of Congo, 10 for Senegal, eight for CĆ“te d'Ivoire, seven for Tunisia and six for Morocco. Haiti's team includes 12, while Qatar and Spain each have just oneā€.

In contrast there are roughy half that number of English born players at the tournament, 50, including our own Tommy Smith and George Hirst.

They've done well haven't they?

When I was growing up they were always the biggest underachievers both domestically and internationally. Perhaps we have taken over that tag now?

Even in my first world cup in 1982 they should have been in the final rather than Germany.

I think your figures are wrong and include adult men living in the UK rather than just England. The figures I’ve read is a difference of 10 million, not 5.

Mbappe is a ridiculous talent though.

His goalscoring record for PSG, Madrid and France:

PSG: Played- 205 Goals- 175
Real: Played- 65. Goals- 58
France: Played- 102. Goals. 62

That’s a goal every 1.2 games. That’s absurd.

I’ve got 21 million adult men in England and 31 adult men in France. But those figures were from Google so may be wrong.

Either way, I’m not sure the point I was making is any different is it?
Why have they been so consistently better?

A lot of what Gainsborough says mage sense. Plus the Premier League attracting the best players from around the world limits the chances of young English players. And that feeds down to the Championship.

That's the question that needs to be put to the powers that be here. I've watched football for 63 years and I think this is probably one of the two best French teams I've seen. If this team had the dream midfield trio of Platini, Tigana and Giresse that the 1980's French team had, you could stop the competition right now and hand them the trophy, no one would come within a country mile of living with them. No one might this time either, though possibly the biggest clash of footballing styles you could ever wish to see is coming up for them next!

The question for me, is why do they continually turn out players with tons of flair, skill, pace and just natural ability and we struggle to do so. Coaching and academy quality? Plus they seem to be allowed to express freely the skills they have. We look very formulaic by comparison. As Thomas Tuchel says, it's about patterns of play. I say it isn't, it's about putting the ball in the back of the net, something else this French team seem pretty good at! No such thing as a truly unbeatable football team, but they are nearer than the vast majority.

Didn't they do a root and branch reset after failing in some comp's , or even qualifying, late 80's possibly? I think Gerard Houllier was at the forefront of establishing an academy/elite training facility.

France has approximately 12,200 Uefa B coaching badge holders. In comparison, England's is roughly 1,190! The extortionate costs put off a lot of people from wanting to do it in this Country.

Spain has approximately 24,000 Uefa qualified coaches! Ultimately, if the FA were to reduce their prices and invest in local coaching, the standards across the Country would improve.

This extract was from Sky sports: 'France has exponentially more UEFA B holders than England due to a heavily subsidized, state-backed coaching framework run by the French Football Federation (FFF). In contrast, English football has historically been bottlenecked by The FA's expensive tuition fees and exclusive course admissions'
