| Where are we ranking that in terms of England’s greatest? 07:44 - Jul 6 with 1381 views | Mullet | I guess no matter what, you can’t surmount the final in 66 (yet) but where does last night rank in terms of performances and results? | |

| Where are we ranking that in terms of England’s greatest? on 08:05 - Jul 6 with 1285 views | Plums | As a 54 year old who has become pretty indifferent to international football over the years, I'm struggling to think of anything better. Given the opposition and their record, the altitude, the red card, the added time, it was an incredible effort and watch. I thought they all played their part and Tuchel used his resources exceptionally well. It'll live long in the memory. | |

But last night was pretty good given what was stacking up against us. Not just all the altitude, venue fans etc. Mexico are ranked 10 in the world and were on their own ground. That's higher than Croatia were when we beat them. It's in the top 5 certainly, Holland 1996, West Germany 1990, Turkey 2003 (i think it was that year, game at sunderland), Croatia 5-0 at home 2009 (but was a dead rubber really) are all up there. Not missing Southgate era deliberately but whilst he took us to a consistent high level there was never really a standout performance against one of the top sides.

That Dutch game was the best performance I've seen from an England team, but in terms of getting a result away from home with everything that was against them, this is up there with the 5-1 in Germany and the 0-0 in Rome to qualify for the world cup. If you factor in friendlies too then there is the 2-0 at the Maracana - John Barnes and all that.

This is the key for me - it is all the factors mentioned, plus it's knockout phase, so you have less time to prepare unlike for Netherlands in Euro 96, Germany in 2001 etc It's the sheer mental strength this team showed to get the result, and the work ethic that they all put in to achieve it. I know Tuchel still has question marks around his squad selection, especially in defence, but the players he brought on at the back last night like Burns, Stones and even Spence really knew their job and got it done, whatever it took.

Agree with all those but one that gets forgotten is the win at all costs v Poland when Lineker scored at first half hatrick in 1986. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

that Dutch game was a fantastic performance for sure, but I dont think it had any of the drama of this game or the intensity & utter jeopardy. as crazy as it sounds, as back then the Dutch were quite good, and England were still very much set in their ways tactically, but it was easy game, it was over before we'd even reached 2/3rds of the match played, summed up by that 3rd goal that Sheringham who never in his career before or after I dont think ever passed to another attacker, when he was directly in front of goal with a potential shot on. Id say it was up there with some of the games from Italia 90, if you were looking for similarities Id guess the Cameroon game came closest. but fwiw genuinely I dont think Ive seen an England game like that before in my lifetime, they had to fight so hard for that win and defend so well against the extra player in a physically hard match.

The latter being particularly good for me because I was watching it at a sports bar near Glasgow. Last night I was laid on my sofa with barely enough energy to do a quiet fist bump.
