| Deal agreed for Toulouse striker Emersonn… on 23:03 - Jul 6 by Hermann_eats_puffin | If this player joins then I wish him all the very best and hope that he goes on to become a star for Ipswich. However I have some serious concerns about the fees that we are prepared to pay for raw potential talent when the jury will be very much out as to whether they’ll hit the ground running and deliver the performances, goals and assists required to see us to achieving PL safety next season. Reading the article on the homepage it says:- “Sky Sports reports that the deal is a €28 million (£24 million) - a new record fee for the Blues - plus €3 million (£2.6 million) in add-ons and a sell-on clause.” If these figures are correct then I’m frankly very concerned about the way we are potentially being very wasteful with funds. Now I’m old enough to remember qualifying for Europe after finishing 5th in 2000-01 and I remember many signings which did nothing to improve the team, did not provide sell on profits for the club and contributed to a financial implosion at the club after relegation and the collapse of ITV Digital all coming off the back of the cost of rebuilding of the north and Churchman stands. In the same article on the homepage it also says:- “...started his career with Athletico Paranaense in his home country before moving on to Turkish side Göztepe in January 2025. That spell led to his move to his current club in Ligue 1 on deadline day last summer for around €3 million (£2.6 million) and last season he scored seven goals in 31 appearances in all competitions, picking up three assists.” So after one season in France he’s now going to cost us €28 million so €25 million Euros more than last summer so he’s added €3.6m to his value for each of the 7 goals scored. That to me seems like bonkers inflation! Turning for a second to scouting now I appreciate that our International scouting & recruitment network was almost non existent in the Evans era and so has had to be built up from scratch following the Gamechanger takeover and our promotions from League One. This just shows to me that we have a heck of a long way to go because we’re buying players one stage too late because if we think he’s a good player why can’t we try buying players such as this last summer when he cost just €3 million. Or we’re just agreeing to massively overly inflated fees and aren’t prepared to walk away after being held to ransom on frankly outrageous fees. Now I’ve nothing against signing Emersonn but the fee quoted seems absolutely ridiculous! Take as comparison last summer Brian Brobbey joining Sunderland for a fee of €20m, which could potentially rise to €25m so less than we’ll be paying for Emersonn. Now take a look at Brobbey’s records as at last summer prior to joining Sunderland:- Senior career Years Team Apps (Gls) 2018–2021 Jong Ajax 32 (16) 2020–2021 Ajax 12 (3) 2021–2022 RB Leipzig 9 (0) 2022 → Ajax (loan) 11 (7) 2022–2025 Ajax 92 (35) International career Apps (Gls) 2017 Netherlands U15 6 (4) 2017 Netherlands U16 5 (5) 2017–2019 Netherlands U17 24 (16) 2019 Netherlands U19 2 (1) 2021–2023 Netherlands U21 17 (9) 2023– Netherlands 16 (4) So as well as having more games of top flight and European game experience, more goals and having been a full international since 2023 when Sunderland were signing him last summer for €20m, which could potentially rise to €25m, so in terms of the intial fee it was €8m less than Emersonn. Now compare Brobbey’s record above to that of Emersonn’s record below which at present is:- Senior career Years Team Apps (Gls) 2024 Athletico Paranaense 13 (0) 2025 Göztepe 17 (2) 2025– Toulouse 28 (6) I nternational career 2019 Brazil U15 4 (0) The comparative records of Brobbey and Emersonn are light years different and yet we’re spending more on Emerson than Sunderland did on Brobbey who seemed much closer to a player who could deliver in the PL straight sway. Now I’m not saying we shouldn’t sign Emersonn and if we do I hope that he does well. But to me the fee being suggested just beggars belief and to me seems like we’re being wasteful with the funds that we do have at our disposal. Whilst promotion to the PL does bring funds for us to spend on transfers if it not an unlimited pot of gold that lasts forever. If we have any hopes of surviving we will need multiple signings and each million wasted is a million that can’t go on another player. Likewise I worry that Ashton is incredibly profligate with spending the funds that the club does have. In the last two seasons the only deals which I think we’ve turned a profit on are Delap, Hutcinson, Broadhead and Woolfenden (but in Wollfie’s case that’s him being a youth player not an astute signing that we’ve sold for a profit). And we have several signings such as Szmodics, Ogbene, Akpom, McAteer who we would struggle to get anywhere near breaking even on let alone a profit (although in Kasey’s case the fee really isn’t his fault and I like him as a player and in time he might well be worth what we paid for him but £12m last summer was too much!) Plus recently we’ve sold Muric for what’s going by reports is a bit of a loss. Now I’d love to be proved wrong by the end of the transfer window (and likewise by the end of the season) but right now we seem a million miles away from the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton etc. who are all very adept at scouting and recruiting talent at good value for money and selling them on for huge profits. And whilst you can argue that all of those are established PL clubs Sunderland managed to recruit perfectly well last summer, something that we have to date not yet done, although it is very early in the transfer window and so lets have patience and judge more by the end of the transfer window and then by how those signings perform over the course of a PL season. But right now to me it feels like we’re getting ripped off by clubs and agents and I do not like getting into bidding wars, such as we seem to have got in with Hull over Emersonn and it just reminds me of the recent poor value purchase of Akpom after a bidding competition with Birmingham last summer which over inflated his value. The key factor you may not have weighed, in your otherwise very thorough research, is "What was Bobby's contract position when Sunderland signed him?" Your posted career history suggests that, having had three full seasons at Ajax there is a strong possibility that he was coming towards the end of a four year deal, or had maybe signed or renegotiated a contract with a release fee. If either is the case, or if Emersonn has a 28 million release clause, then it may be more the case that Sunderland got a bargain by signing him at an opportune moment, than that we have had our trousers pulled down. | | | |

Doesn’t look a natural finisher and will take time to settle in a new country (see also Egeli). I hope we are looking for a seasoned striker or two because I’m not expecting much from this guy this season. And again that fee looks ridiculous.

Your comparison should be Evans and Gamechanger/ORG/Bright Path, who have done more for this club in four years than Evans managed in thirteen. Ashtons comparison point is Clegg. No contest. I just said he’d be less popular. Didn’t say they had the same roles.

| Deal agreed for Toulouse striker Emersonn… on 09:40 - Jul 7 by yorkshireblue | Whilst a good post, the Brian Brobbey trasnfer is unique. They were the only team in for him after Guiu was recalled by Chelsea and Brobbey had to leave Amsterdam - https://www.theguardian.com/fo From https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport "Brobbey chose Sunderland because he had no choice. And Sunderland didn’t choose Brobbey because he’s scored so many goals. It’s simply an affordable opportunity for the English side, who are laughing at a transfer fee of €20m excluding bonuses.” |
Hi Yorkshireblue, Hope that you're good and that is a very good point! However shouldn't we be seeking out deals such as the one that Sunderland got for Brobbey? Seeking players who have proved themselves in senior football and are perhaps nearing the end of their contract and on which you can negotiate a good deal on. As opposed to signing players who are at say year one of a five year contract and you have to pay an enormous transfer fee to get a player from another team. Sunderland did spend fees above £20m last summer but they were on players who had either say more senior club or international football under their belts. They also signed other more project players but that was more in the bracket of say £10m-£20m players. The way I look at it is for every million we overpay on a transfer that's one million that can't go towards another player for the team/squad. If looking at the team in the PL next season we're already 13th in the table of net spend over the last 5 years (taken from the link below):- https://www.football365.com/ne 12) Sunderland five-year net spend: £-116.32m 26/27: £18.85m 25/26: £-138.59m (7th) 24/25: £5.41m (4th in Championship) 23/24: £-1.54m (16th in Championship) 22/23: £5.08m (6th in Championship) 13) Ipswich Town five-year net spend: -£115.35m 26/27: £-5.87m 25/26: £25.98m (2nd in Championship) 24/25: £-130.32m (19th) 23/24: £-4.92m (2nd in Championship) 22/23: £-1.65m (2nd in League One) 14) Brentford five-year net spend: £-79.65m 26/27: £-9.61m 25/26: £43.51m (9th) 24/25: £-20.12m (10th) 23/24: £-52.3m (16th) 22/23: £-38.44m (9th) 15) Everton five-year net spend: £-73.68m 26/27: £-55.88m 25/26: £-101.87m (13th) 24/25: £28.17m (13th) 23/24: £36.23m (15th) 22/23: £21.7m (17th) 16) Aston Villa five-year net spend: £-65.62m 26/27: £27.24m 25/26: £-14m (4th) 24/25: £39.54m (6th) 23/24: £-65.44m (4th) 22/23: £-38.25m (7th) 17) Coventry City five-year net spend: £-22.58m 26/27: £-6m 25/26: £-2.91m (1st in Championship) 24/25: £-18.43m (5th in Championship) 23/24: £3.24m (9th in Championship) 22/23: £1.52m (5th in Championship) 18) Leeds United five-year net spend: £-4.23m 26/27: £20m 25/26: £-91.51m (14th) 24/25: £109.47m (1st in Championship) 23/24: £-1.95m (3rd in Championship) 22/23: £-41.44m (19th) 19) Brighton five-year net spend: £-2.5m 26/27: – £0.2m 25/26: £56.51m (8th) 24/25: £-191.58m (8th) 23/24: £69.1m (11th) 22/23: £70.82m (6th) 20) Hull City five-year net spend: £10.42m 26/27: -£-3m 25/26: £5.4m (6th in Championship) 24/25: £9.85m (21st in Championship) 23/24: £-8.21m (7th in Championship) 22/23: £6.36m (15th in Championship) Now I want Town to become a successful and sustainable club in the PL and if you're not a club the size of Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal etc. who have a global reach and huge incomes then the way that teams like Brighton and Brentford can stay in the PL is to player trade. At the moment before we've even spent money we sit 13th in the table of net spend over the last 5 years. Now I think that there are mitigating circumstances for that such as having risen from league one and having needed to build a squad to compete at a higher level. However I don't think that anyone could sensibly argue that at present we have the 13th best squad in the PL. So we're going to have to spend at least another £100m plus this summer in order just to give us a chance of competing in the PL next season. What I want is us to become a team like Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth in being suitable in the PL and in a few years time I'd like us to eclipse them. But in order to do that we're going to have to both recruit and trade players well to generate more income to invest in the next player on the production line and for that you have to buy low and sell high.

I don’t have a lot of trust in Ashton he has got a lot wrong transfer wise in the last 12 months. However you would think GON will know this guy well from his time in France and hopefully thinks he is someone who has the attributes to make an impact on the prem. hence why we are paying a large fee if it happens

Hi ArnoldMoorhen, Hope that you're good! Yes I do agree that the contract situation can play a big part in the transfer fee that it's possible to negotiate for a player. But how about we as a club go searching for those players with the profile and experience that we want who are nearing the end of their contract as opposed to players who are in say year 1 of a long contract and cost a fortune to get out of it. Or we need to get better at scouting and buy these players one move before the stage that we're currently looking at purchasing by buying from the smaller leagues in Europe or buying the cream of the talent at a younger age and then you can add real value to them. I've absolutely no issue with signing Emerson or players like him profile wise and I'm really excited that we are because they are the type of profile that we need. However I don't like us getting ripped off or not being prepared to walk away from deals if a selling team wants to hold us to ransom in a biding war with other clubs (Hull in this instance) used to inflate a fee. If we sign Emerson I'll be just as excited as others to see him play and and will be supporting him in games. However lots of people have agreed that we need to sign say 8 players or more this summer. Now if they all cost £25m each we're not going to have enough money in the bank to sign the volume of players that we need to make both the team & squad good enough to compete in the PL. So it's not just about splashing the cash it's about spending wisely with a coherent strategy to both get the players to help us on the pitch and to build squad value of saleable assets. Hopefully if we sign Emersonn for say roughly €28 fingers crossed he delivers on the pitch gets us secure in the PL and then in a year or two we can sell him for £60M+ and then we buy the next player on the production line because that's how smart clubs like Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth operate on smaller budgets and compete in the PL.

Think hard to just compare with Brobbey, he was almost seen as a distressed asset at that point - he'd been the next big thing, and looked like he'd be a megastar at one point but in last 18 months at Ajax his goal record was poor and was almost seen as though Ajax had missed the boat in his selling window Think they were delighted with the deal, Sunderland just panicking in the market a it after Guiu recalled - transfer has worked out fantastically but process wise was certainly a lot more luck than judgement in this one and also one prob only available after Sunlun had started the season well.....that's not a criticism, and not illustrative of all their business, they did some great stuff last year but this one probably shouldn't be held up above those other ones or used as a stick to beat other deals with, was a freak deal to work out so well

You are comparing a team which has been in the doldrums for the best part of 2 decades to the absolute pinnacle of clubs we could aspire to, and to the absolute perfect, hindsight based, transfers. That way madness lies, yes aspire to it, eventually but to pick apart every transfer and want it to be comparable to the absolute best perfect ones you can conjure up is a recipe for unhappiness. Of course we'd all love to attract the same type of player, find the perfect transfer at the perfect point. But give over. All the analysis in the world about woulda coulda shoulda is based on proven perfection. We are not in those clubs positions and we haven't got a time machine. And being 13th in a bet spend league based on one season in the prem when the others have had multiple regurgitations of fees paid and received is hugely flawed logic too. Of course we haven't got the 13 th best squad, those other squads have been refined year after year after year. Such a silly stat!

| Deal agreed for Toulouse striker Emersonn… on 11:10 - Jul 7 by itfcjoe | Think hard to just compare with Brobbey, he was almost seen as a distressed asset at that point - he'd been the next big thing, and looked like he'd be a megastar at one point but in last 18 months at Ajax his goal record was poor and was almost seen as though Ajax had missed the boat in his selling window Think they were delighted with the deal, Sunderland just panicking in the market a it after Guiu recalled - transfer has worked out fantastically but process wise was certainly a lot more luck than judgement in this one and also one prob only available after Sunlun had started the season well.....that's not a criticism, and not illustrative of all their business, they did some great stuff last year but this one probably shouldn't be held up above those other ones or used as a stick to beat other deals with, was a freak deal to work out so well |
A very fair point Joe! Lets just hope that this summer we have the stokes of luck with all our signings that Sunderland had with their last summer!

Hi Axeldalai lama, Hope that you're good. Yes you're right that it's not fair to compare us against Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth because it's not an apples for apples comparison because they are the model of player trading clubs that we can aspire to become but it's unrealistic to expect us to be there overnight. However perhaps the closest comparison you can make is with Sunderland who like us have spent 4 of the last seasons out of the PL and this is how we compare before we've started spending money this summer:- 12) Sunderland five-year net spend: £-116.32m 26/27: £18.85m 25/26: £-138.59m (7th) 24/25: £5.41m (4th in Championship) 23/24: £-1.54m (16th in Championship) 22/23: £5.08m (6th in Championship) 13) Ipswich Town five-year net spend: -£115.35m 26/27: £-5.87m 25/26: £25.98m (2nd in Championship) 24/25: £-130.32m (19th) 23/24: £-4.92m (2nd in Championship) 22/23: £-1.65m (2nd in League One) So for Sunderland having spent £1m more than us over that 5 year period how would you compare our two squads and the squad value & quality? Now the closest thing in terms of comparison is the two windows just after we both got promoted when our net spends were between £130m-£140m. Now Sunderland were helped on the net spend ratio by selling Jobe Bellingham in that window. But overall who spent more wisely & intelligently and built a squad with the higher value? Yes we got the transfers of Delap and Hutchinson right and the player trading on them was good for the club. But overall we fell well short of where we needed to be. Fingers crossed with a bit of luck we get it right this summer. Come on you blues!

Yeah but if we take the absolute highest end of any fee quoted, however overblown, and we assume that everyone we sign won't work out then imagine how unhappy we can make ourselves and how angry we can get. That would be fun wouldn't it?! And to think, this is the exciting bit, in all likelihood the best scenario is we win a third of our games, get tonked quite a few times and scrape by. Imagine how angry some people will be by then!! [Post edited 7 Jul 12:11]

Focussing on a comparison with Sunderland is the right thing to do - most other clubs now have years of player trading that distorts the nett spend comparison (but is absolutely where we need to be in 2-3 years). Undoubtedly Sunderland did phenomenally well (although I still predicted that they will struggle this coming season, and are likely to be a relegation contender), but they did have one major advantage over us when they were promoted to the PL. Bellingham. Plus other sales, they had an additional £50M available to spend. This allowed them to engage in transfers a level above us. In their first transfer window on returning to the PL, they were able to spend 40% more on players than us. That's a seismic difference. Let's not take away from them any recognition of how good many of their signings were, but lets also no kid ourselves that the financials were the same. We're better positioned this transfer window financially, and hopefully we snag some amazing players. Regarding Emersonn, I did a comparison to Delap in another post, and the signings are very similar - both on commercials, and stats prior to joining us. Delap was not supposed to be our first choice striker, and I suspect this lad is the same. We'll still be looking for a more experienced first choice. £20M feels about right for this chap, with us needing to drop more for an experienced striker in addition. It's a position we've been weak in for a while, and needs some serious money thrown at it. Of course, I'd prefer to spend less, and snag a bargain, but for me it's more important to do the deal now, maybe spend a little more, and get players in ASAP.

But in Sunderland you are comparing us with the one team that has been ahead of the curve and and clearly done amazingly well. It has defied expectations. Unlike, Burnley, Southampton, Leicester, Luton, Sheffield Utd, Watford, even Norwich etc etc. All who have been promoted and relegated in the last 5 years or so and who are all in a worse position than us squad wise. Cherry picking the best example is aspirational, but shouldn't be the expectation against every single transfer. Like I said that way you are destined to be very unhappy and very stressed.

Someone who can make the ball stick and hopefully be a nuisance and at the very least a threat. Could be the best bit of business we ever do, could be a disaster, but whatever way you look at it, we’re paying 20m for a 21 year old Brazilian youth International who still has room to get better. Can we please be a bit excited ffs. |

| Deal agreed for Toulouse striker Emersonn… on 10:50 - Jul 7 by Hermann_eats_puffin | Hi Yorkshireblue, Hope that you're good and that is a very good point! |
You have to consider wages as well. That is probably more relevant than fees paid to be honest. Imagine Sunderland had a wage bill in the region of £100-120m last season. Ours was £77m in 2024/25. Leeds wage bills in both of their last Championship seasons were higher than our last season in the PL. Xhaka is reportedly on £140k a week. Brobbey came from Ajax. Le Fee from Roma. Mukiele from PSG. Reinaldo from Atletico. Masuaku from Besiktas. Geertruida from Leipzig on loan. All will be on money higher than I imagine any one bar Phillips was earning here during 24/25.

I mean it's not 'currently' and even if it was why are you putting this potential new signing that is yet to kick a ball with 2 also rans who were a in built cost to being promoted and winning us £150 million? And a manager who. Is yet to manage a game? And a keeper who is being vaguely linked at many differing values. Such a weird extrapolation to say that 2 adequate things derived from an immense positive for the club, means that these next 3 things will definitely we terrible and eeek, it's looking really bad. Nonsense. Weird, self inflicted wounds if nonsense.
